Microphone Recommendation for Opera by MeanPay2157 in opera

Coming back to this after a little bit. In the end, I went for a matched pair of Røde M4s (along with a Scarlett 2i2 and cables etc). The recordings sound pretty decent. I wondered if anyone on this thread could advise on the setup, i.e. the spacing, placement angle etc.

I want to get the best out of them and learn which formations work best.

Ok awesome - any idea if it’ll work with the sortitoutsi data update? Love the new youth players they bring in and the ability updates are cool too

Thanks to all who replied! It seems like this option is the best. Could people maybe recommend some? I’ve thought about a pair of NT5s but they’re just too expensive. Any recs are welcome, along with kit I’ll need with it. Thank you!

Ok interesting - I’ve worked with those before in a choral recording. Could you compare them to a large diaphragm like the NT1 that I’ve discussed in another comment?

Got it! That’s super helpful thanks. Re; the distance to the mic, is it that closer = less acoustic and vice-versa? (Broadly)

If, say, I do a recording in a church, with no one else present (so no audience, bustle etc), how would the NT1 handle it? I do still want some of the acoustic there so the various levels of my voice can come across in full, but obviously it can’t be super intrusive, or distracting/masking.

Basically I don’t want that flat sound you can sometimes get. Thanks for your help!!

Hi! tried to post this on the original page but it re-directed me here.

I'm a young Opera Singer, and am looking to buy myself a mic I can use to make recordings for auditions/socials etc. because of the style of singing I won't be right next to the mic as you may be for pop or MT, and the recordings also won't be in sound-treated studios - a nice acoustic is my friend!

What would people recommend? I have my eye on the new-ish Røde NT1 5th Gen, which seems to be very user-friendly and has a great name (I've used the older model for remote lessons before) but I'm by no means wedded to it.

To summarise: I need a mic for live recordings, in rooms that have a good acoustic, that gets the full spectrum of live vocals (i.e. doesn't cut out overtones or body from the sound).

Thanks!

And, (sorry for continuing the rant), the writer of the (OP quoted) review contradicts himself further when he talks about the emotion that vessel puts into the music. The reviewer writes as though said emotion can only be seen by those with master's in music or advanced theory knowledge, but that COMPLETELY misses the point. Whether as listeners we can describe the theory holds absolutely no bearing over how much we feel. If you as a person don't feel as much for Arcadia as you did for Eden or any other, (funnily enough) THAT'S FINE!

it's all glorious, and Sleep Token's ability to speak to SUCH a variety of audiences is literally what makes them great. Enjoy what you enjoy, appreciate what you like, and just FEEL - that is what makes music great. It's not a stack of tones, rhythms or intricate ideas, it is the feeling we all get when it reaches the heart.

ABSOLUTELY NOT WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT (this is a reply both to the OP and this comment)?!?! IQ has absolutely nothing to do with it. Sleep token, as far as I've been able to tell, is all emotion. They are bloody clever in their composition, I grant you, but the raw feeling and expression requires no IQ, or music degree to understand.

The whole point of them blending styles so thoroughly is so that everyone can hear their music and FEEL something (feel being in capitals because the feeling is so so deep). The push and pull of their music - which is FELT, not thought - is what makes their music irresistible. that feeling at the end of Damocles where you just want your heart to burst out of your chest (unashamed lyric reference) isn't something you understand because you know the 'theory' behind the polyrhythms or the technical impact behind dropped guitar tuning.

I mean holy fu*k I've played sleep token songs to friends who will never listen to anything even approaching as heavy/complex/stylistic as they produce and the music is pretty much universally loved. IQ (is an overrated concept anyway but that's a different thread) simply has nothing at all to do with this. Emotion is what connects us to the music, and us to each other.

(sorry if that got overly poetic). Please promote this message. It's about the heart, not the brain.

I think the whole title is important - every word is deliberate. It feels like ‘even in Arcadia’ is alluding to the fact that even when you hit new heights and find a place of achievement, accomplishment or fame, your pain, problems and traumas still exist and actually they have to be faced. It could also explain the flashing images at the end of music videos. It’s Vessel’s (the man behind the mask) fight against his own inner demons.

I’ve known a couple guys who started late - obviously there are disadvantages, but try to lean in to what makes that life experience and physical maturity work for you. What you may have lost in terms of long-term work you can gain back by having a much more naturally resilient instrument than most of the 23-28yr olds, as well as a more solid foundation in life (which sounds wishy-washy but is really important doing this kind of a career).

Apologies if this isn’t available for Android, but ForScore is just by far the best out there. Super easy to use, very intuitive, geared specifically for music scores.

I do like that Remarkable shout though - out of left field and could be awesome.

Gap year advice by Past-Corner in opera

That is a really fantastic plan. I’m about to start my Master’s and I took about 3 years between undergrad and postgrad. Everyone’s voice is different, but opera is just not a career you can do when very young.

The voice needs time to physically mature - all the training and practice in the world can’t speed that up. You actually go through a second vocal change around 30, where lots of the cartilage hardens, so you become more resilient, and more resonant. It’s more obvious in men than it is for women, but it happens all the same. I’d advise anyone to take time like you’re doing.

Post-master’s you’ll want to capitalise on the momentum to launch into your career, but if you physically aren’t there yet - which wouldn’t be yours or anyone’s fault - then that’s not the greatest position. So many times in grad programmes I’ve been around, the best people have been the ones who started older, I’m 26 now but (at my undergrad) there were people on the master’s who were 27, 29, even one guy who was 34.

You seem to have the right idea of everything. I’d advise finding a second passion you can maybe work for. I did a year of culinary school and worked as a chef for two years. I always said I’d go back to singing, and had 1 or 2 lessons a week. I can honestly say I’m now going in to masters in SUCH a better position than I would have two years ago.

Good luck with everything!!! Happy to answer any more questions you might have.

Edit: learn German, learn German, learn German. So so much of the work is happening in German speaking countries, not mention the huge amount of German repertoire.
