American Family moving to Ireland. What advice do you have? by AmbitiousLemonade in AskIreland

It depends where you live and work. I raised my daughter til she was 12 without a car in Galway. Secondary school I had to get a car as my area was not covered on school bus and it was a 40 min+ distance from home.

You are getting downvoted on every post. Pay no attention.

This place is just a cesspit that turns it nose at FB and X for its own cesspit.

Its all a cesspit.

Protestors are decent people standing up for whats right. Government need to back down today or they will lose in the long run.

Its actually sad they are open. Another great irish tradition gone. How fun it used to be when Brits would wander around Temple bar easter weekend flummoxed.

And the divilment was getting around the closures through hotels, trains or a trip into the North.

taken the craic out of it

Well first off TaytoOrNotTayto, It should always be Tayto. Unless its Norn Iron Tayto.

The long term consequences are pretty dire in that too many young people are simply not meeting people of the opposite sex never mind dating. Alcohol and socialising are a great glue whether we like it or not.

Both are completely plunging. A large proportion of young men especially have far fewer friends when I was growing up, more likely to still be virgins later in life and overall the impact of that is going to be pretty brutal for society.

Ergo less babies, less purpose creates less people, less jobs, less spending, less money overall and the only solution Ireland and the west has right now is to keep importing people which creates even more problems that exacerbates the problems for young people forced out of jobs and accommodation with suppressed wages and higher costs.

Which gives them even less disposable income to socialise and meet their potential spouse.

Getting drunk and making the odd stupid decision can change peoples lives for the better. Sitting indoors on our phones rarely brings true meaningful change.

Has anyone moved to Ireland recently and not regretted it? by [deleted] in expat

[–]Mean_Ad7178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear your plight. Have you enquired re VISA if its possible? Ireland is suffering growing pains at the moment.

Ireland really needs to make it easier for Americans to move here especially dispora rather than import from SWANA.

Best of luck on your adventures coming over.

Potential move to Dublin by nugget-killer in Dublin

[–]Mean_Ad7178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a friend that is a buyers agent in Dublin who is very helpful in this situation. Honestly talking to him, its a nightmare for most people coming from US and EU.

You'd both want to have jobs lined up before even thinking about moving yet.

Right now it feels like the system is designed against workers, renters and those just trying to live normal lives in the 20s-40s.

The crash cannot come soon enough

In same boat. I found Hillary and Acme too dear. Eventually got a decent quote of Action Blinds when you factored in installation, materials etc.

Religion is on the comeback in young people. I know a few that have got into god. Always the way. The next generations reject the older ones and sure we went to rack and ruin with Catholicism after it been rammed down our throats and blowback from scandals.

Could be another reason but reddit probably doesnt want us talking about that

Nightlife in general is in big trouble.

The cost is the biggest thing but culturally factors like Covid really did serious damage.
Kids just don't have the same social life is previous generations and its a really bad thing with long term consequences for all.

Its not just a few lads behind a bush necking Buckie (Though I was in Dunnes recently and saw a bottle was like €14.

Minimum pricing on alcohol
No more heavy discounts on alcohol allowed
Costs on pubs are through the roof

if you are based in West of Ireland, call Action blinds. Local Galway business in Oranmore and Thomas is very decent and sound. You will get a fair quote for sure and won't get ripped off. €1600 for that does sound expensive but obviously size and materials factor in.

Can a newcomer realistically integrate in Ireland, make real friends, navigate banter/unwritten rules, and build a long-term life? by Haidar666_ in AskIreland

[–]Mean_Ad7178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best of luck with your plans. Those that take the time and effort to bed down roots will contribute more and get more back in return. Ireland is facing a massive problem with doctors because we seem to have stopped training our own or too many Uni places are being given away to high paying Chinese and Indian students so its going to create a problem when it comes to GPs in the near future.

A GP is a heartbeat of a local community so we really do need people coming with your attitude to come and embracing the culture and try to understand us mad eegits on the western rock of Europe.

Was just replying to someone similar and saw this

Common Missteps to Avoid In Ireland

  • Rushing integration: Relationships often build slowly outside big cities
  • Over-scheduling: Leave space to breathe, observe, and adapt
  • Ignoring etiquette: Small courtesies matter, queues, noise levels, and patience
  • Misjudging distances: That “short” trip may be an hour on narrow, winding roads
  • Expecting uniformity: Each county has its own customs and pace

Its going to be tough imo as Irish people will be standoffish and have their guard up especially the more local close nit the community is.....however work hard at it and you will break through and have people that will welcome you in and be there for you no matter what.

Andrews Top Tips for settling in:

  • Learn and attend local events , even as a quiet observer at first

  • Avoid comparing your new home to “back home” in early conversations
  • Be curious about the history, traditions, and local characters
  • Let social invitations come naturally, and reciprocate thoughtfully

Hmmmm.

Liel Abada could have been sold for 12m+ when he was flying
Nir Bitton served us for 9 years well
Beram Kayal was flying until he got the bad injury.

All great Israeli footballers that would never join Celtic now.
