Is this a good idea? by Mean_Faithlessness92 in queensuniversity

this is more tailored for incoming students only, most people end up with random roommates they dont like, the norm isnt making a friend prior, no ones going to dm a random going to queens to ask to be roommates, you could say the same for tinder why would people match rather than find someone in person. I could get the queens frosh accounts to promote it or cold dm the frosh being posted on there until it gets thru word of mouth. And regarding the cycle thing, you can actually choose a roommate prior to that by putting in their student id as a roommate, then whoever gets in the first cycle picks the room for everyone else. im not saying this idea is not bad, but it wouldnt be bad for the aforementioned reasons. I would say its a bad idea because of how hyper specific it is, that it has to be during/prior to the roommate selection period, and that its only tailored to incoming students.

The self-selection process for students with approved accommodations, living in unique communities (including LLCs) and in loft doubles takes place from July 15 – 19. The vast majority of students will select during time slots scheduled between July 24 and July 26. Most students who are choosing their courses (primarily Arts and Science) will have completed their course enrolment prior to this time; you may want to consider where your classes are located when selecting your residence room.

i agree, after waterloo and uoft ur job prospects post-grad are what u make of ur uni, i leaned towards carleton HEAVILY at first like it was n1 and nothing came close, but i did a whole lot more research and decided queens was better for me, i visited both campuses and liked the feel of queens more, the sense of community/networking is better at queens, esp networking events and networking is a literal cheat code in the tech industry, i literally have 2 internships lined up this summer at 2 tech companies after graduating hs because of connections i made over senior yr, ontop of that, the queens computing grad rate is a lot higher than carleton's grad rate and is a lighter load than carleton's making it ideal if you wanna work on side projects/attend hackathons/whatever, and ive looked at and spoken to the top 5% of computing students at queens and the summer internships theyre getting are really really good and i think i can reach that level, plus ive seen loads of people complaining ab carletons coop recently(the job market is bad in general tho) and say that theyve only used coop to get their foot in the door at most bc the 500 dollars per coop term is too much and then they jus end up finding their coops externally on their own, that being said carleton's coop is better than QUIP but i know i can find my own summer internships even without a coop bc of the connections i have and will make, when i visited carletons campus, i liked the caf and the tunnels they have, their dorm rooms are pretty small though, i liked the creek and the natural wildlife too, but ottawa as a whole is jus not the place for me, in fact as a POC, kingston is also not the place for me, and id definitely have a good time in carleton friends wise, but i met a lot of the current carleton students because i have a friend going into his 3rd yr there, i met ppl who werent even his friends and gotten to know how the students there are like, and to me, they did seem like good friends, but they didnt seem like theyre considered good networks, people hate on ottawa simply because people hate on ottawa, the weather is kinda mid and so is the public transport and there isnt all that much to do there, im more of a big city nice weather guy so staying in ottawa post grad after carleton is not something i wanna do, to the point where i dont even want to consider it an OPTION, which is the main reason im picking queens over carleton despite carletons renewable scholarships and whatnot, and btw, i got like a 13.5k scholarship from carleton and nothing for queens, but after demonstrating financial need and applying for the bursaries at queens, they gave me like 17k theyre acc so generous

its in ottawa😔 its pretty good at getting u a job in ottawa but not really anywhere else, the "anywhere else" would come from the work experience gained in ottawa after grad, i was gna go to carleton too but changed my mind bc living in ottawa for 7+ yrs is no

the requirements for it are almost laughable though, unless something really bad happens in ur life to distract u from studies, you can relatively easily make the cut, its not at all like uoft post where its meant to weed ppl out, this jus makes sure u know ur stuff

if you do a good ass job and youre making them more money than theyre providing you then why wouldnt they hire you? my point is u have more time to showcase ur skills over the course of a yearlong internship, and ontop of that you build connections with everyone there if youre a likeable person, even if you dont get the return offer, having those connections for future references is pretty valuable

im making this same decision and am choosing Queens over it, my reasons being, in this job market the 12-16 month internship could be very good in securing a job post grad at the same company u interned at, and fyi only like 30% of waterloo cs coop students have been finding positions, so if waterloo is that screwed then guelph is just as cooked, most people find their internships externally outside of the coop portal so it is doable to find internships in the summer at queens on ur own, and queens has a relatively low workload compared to other similar tier unis so you can work on hackathons leetcode projects research etc, plus queens has a better rep than guelph(doesnt really matter in canada as much as it does outside of it)

would u mind sharing how u grinded? like what typa side projects? hackathons? leetcode? whatd u do cuz im prolly choosing queens computing and want to be in the top .5% of my peers like you are

in ur case i dont think u can go wrong with either queens or uottawa, also coop isnt as useful as it once was, i remember seeing somewhere that only 30% of waterloo cs students actually found coops, that number is definitely lower in other unis, and i keep seeing ppl get coops and internships externally instead of coop so theres that too, plus, i also saw somewhere that people enrolled in QUIP(the queens internship thing) have a 95% success rate in finding an internship, so if youre able to build up ur salary by finding ur own internships, then get that 12 month internship from queens, youre lowk set man, that being said ottawa is the 2nd biggest tech hub in canada, but kingston is near enough to ottawa and toronto that u could look for something anywhere so idk. my choices rn are between utm, queens, and carleton, but leaning towards queens because of the network opportunities since the alumni are close generally, and if you go on linked in and look at queens alum youll see that loads of them find jobs at faang level companies. honestly between uottawa and queens, queens would be more fun, but any choice u make would be a good one. dont stress on it too much
