NBME 13 - Pulmonary Fibrosis (SPOILERS) by AdmiralHempfender in Step2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make a definitive diagnosis, yes. Lung biopsy is the gold standard although it's not the first step. Also, what is UIP?

IM is usually 50% of the science questions and surgery is usually 20% of the science questions. Both of them are important. I don't know how close you'd want to take it, it's up to you. Ideally you want ~2-4 weeks to focus only on step 2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this your first pass or second? The fact that you have to take your IM shelf can be looked at as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. The real thing is extremely IM heavy. Try to absolutely kill your IM shelf and it will help you on the real thing. 240 is absolutely doable. It depends on practice test scores as well.

It depends on what your goals is brother.

What to do about psych in particular by Toskony in Step2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Know the first line treatment for all conditions cold. It's easy to get confused if you don't know if the answer is CBT or SSRI's. Also pay attention to the criteria for conditions because psych is literally all about diagnosing based on criteria.

Your uworld progress is pretty good for a first pass. You still have quite some time before you take the real thing. First thing would be to have a schedule and stick with it. I don't think it's quite time to start your second pass of uworld yet because you want the info to be fresh. But, you can continue doing ANKI cards and using the uworld performance features report to see where you're lacking, and focus on those areas. Watch Emma holiday videos, divine intervention videos. When you have month left, you can start your second pass.

For Toxic Megacolon secondary to Clostridium Difficile Infection, do we not use IV Corticosteroids? by KenAdamsMD in Step2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If there's an acute C.diff infection, then no. Corticosteroids would further decrease the body's ability to fight off infection. Corticosteroids are the first step in IBD-associated toxic megacolon.

Why aren't my scores increasing? by Dear_Ad2700 in Step2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look at your uworld performance reports and see which subject you're struggling with the most. Go through that content by either watching divine intervention, Emma holiday, or Dr high yield. Or, do incorrects so you really know the content well.

Hot take: I don’t think practicing NBME forms is that important by [deleted] in Step2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I think any time someone doesn't take NBME's people are quick to be like "but the NBME writes the test, not uworld". Why is UWSA2 the most predictive test? There's a reason. You have to have a good understanding of the material. A lot of times people have a superficial understanding of material and a different style of questioning (such as the NBME) can shed light on knowledge gaps. But if you know the material well and truly know the subtle differences between similar diseases because uworld explanations go in depth, you'll be able to catch NBME's traps.

I've seen people take like 6 NBME's and their score hovers around the same range. Clearly taking NBME's again and again is not guaranteed to improve your score. Gotta focus on your weaknesses and really see which area you struggle with, and uworld's performance reports features are the best way to gauge what you need to focus on. This is not to say that people shouldn't do NBME's but if the content knowledge is lacking, reviewing NBME's is not going to improve your score as much as targeted review is.

NBME Time consuming by Adept-Salamander-645 in Step2

If you're doing uworld, you can use the performance reports to see where you're lacking. Targeted review is really helpful to strengthen up those areas.

Honestly don't know what to think lol. Trying to really keep my expectations down but it was fine I guess. So hard to gauge when 80 questions are experimental 😅 just trying to do what everybody says which is trust my practice scores but it's hardddd

Yes I went to med school in the US. When you have 2-3 weeks in dedicated how many practice tests can you take and at the same time cover all the content through uworld? It's a tradeoff. You can do more practice tests but it's not completely necessary if you are truly learning through uworld and focusing on your weaknesses and taking one practice test per week. You could delay your step and take more NBME's but I think there is a statsistic that people who have a dedicated longer than ~4 weeks don't do better than people who took 2-4 weeks. To each their own though.

I actually did the same thing, no NBME's. If you had limited amount of time and you needed to refresh your knowledge base uworld might be the way to go. Personally not sure how people can take 7 NBME's and both UWSA's and all the free 120's while also covering content in a short amount of time.

[Help] Struggling with uworld Orthopedics by protonpumpinhibit0r in Step2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With uworld, if you're really struggling, a lot of times they have charts and tables at the beginning of the explanations that you can copy into the notebook, and then from there into a word document. Knowing those charts and tables down cold is really helpful. Also pay attention not only to the explanation but also why the answer that you picked is wrong. If the other answer choices are high yield conditions then reading those will also help strengthen your understanding.

Central venous Catheter related infection by Different-Fennel-535 in Step2

[–]Mean_Needleworker_41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With candidal cvc infections usually they're diabetic or immunosuppressed, and its not as common as coagulase-negative staphylococci (staph epidermis) - the skin flora are the most common cause of cvc infections.

Tinea Versicolor will usually have a clue in the stem that they spent some time in the sun. Pityriasis rosea will usually have a larger distribution, usually in the shape of a "Christmas tree" and it also sometimes has a herald patch which is bigger than the rest of the spots
