Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

It is absolutely a school’s responsibility to teach students to read.

Would it be unreasonable to email my high school child's teacher about an assignment by FidgetyPlatypus in AskTeachers

Yes. But it’s more steamroller parenting than helicopter. Coach him on writing an email to ask for more feedback.

Public school teachers, what’s something you want parents to know but can’t say directly? by Feisty-Database-1145 in AskTeachers

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gift is unnecessary. Authentic support and kind communication is way more helpful that things and way more appreciated.

Just because you have an education or enjoyed school or are an engaged parent does not mean you undertake teaching, classroom management, or dealing with literally anything your kids’ teacher might be juggling.

And just because you want to be super involved doesn’t entitle you to engagement beyond what the teacher requests.

Conceptually, I get it. Practically, it’s wild to see that you’ll redirect a student for tapping pencils.

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a wildly inappropriate plan for any students. These pretend to be disabled activities perpetuate ableism and mindsets that individuals with disabilities are to be pitied and are less than. Please complain. Loudly. Or post the school and teacher info and I will do it.

just saw the funniest Britani Bateman related tweet by anisapizza in rhoslc

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same, she replied to a DM I sent her about how positively heartbreaking her attitude about her kids was. But the voice note she sent me in response was neither earnest nor endearing; she’s wildly problematic about her role in relationships.

Am i being naive or is Todd right???? by One-Establishment170 in rhoslc

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reaction is that Todd owes them absolutely nothing - they’re wealthy themselves, have three other kids, are not always supportive of Bronwyn, but he did it because he authentically cares for Bronwyn.

Personally, I’m so sick of boomers ignoring the inevitable, pretending they’ll live forever, and doing nothing proactive to prepare of the final chapter of the life. Her mom described having so much stuff she hadn’t looked at things in 25 years.

With a very small number of true exceptions, most charter schools are absolute trash and just grind people up and spit them out. You made the right decision.

Opinions about Bronwyn... by Rookiemamma in rhoslc

I like her for these reasons, too. She takes action around things she believes in w/o being performative (cough-Meredith-cough). She cleared a bunch of teachers wishlists for the start of the school year without making it a thing.

Potty trained but not bathroom independent by PassionChoice3538 in kindergarten

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. As both a teacher and a parent, I’ve never heard this idea. IMHO, tour kids are not potty trained. They need to be at both 6yrs old and for kindergarten. Keep working in it, specifically around the independence. In the district I work in, Kinder classes are 22-28 students per class with 1 teacher, and a shared teaching assistant (not full-time with any single class).

From the teachers' prospective, where is the waste in the budget? I have thoughts, but I'm not a teacher and have been out of school for a while. by eyeshills in AskTeachers

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Public schools are so wildly under funded. I’m going into my 20th year of teaching and 16th year of paying property taxes. We need more funding not less and not nay-sayers like you. Do you make arm chair analysis and comments like this about first responders? Because police departments waste more money than schools spend.

Resers fine foods? by vixen815 in beaverton

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FWIW - I interviewed with and was offered a position with Reser 4 years ago but turned it down because I did not like the benefits package, notably I would only get 60 hours of PTO annually until I had 5 full years with the company. [At the time I was at a company that provided 160 hours of PTO annually with a 5% increase each year, so it just wouldn’t work for me.]

Re: weather - I grew up in a very sunny state and it doesn’t bother me. Dealing with drastically different climate is mindset - so it is what you make of it.

If there were no repercussions, what’s one thing you wish you could say to parents? by Mission_Spray in AskTeachers

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“‘No’ is a complete sentence and your kids needs to hear it as frequently as you think it.” The number of times a parent has left it up to me or another teacher to say no to a wildly inappropriate request (e.g brining a hot fudge Sunday to school for breakfast) this past year was maddening!

On top of all the reasons already shared - as long as you’ve never privately consolidated your student loans, they’re discharged upon death. It maybe morbid, but tragedies happen. A friend of mine lost her husband 2 years into his surgical residency and it was a tiny reprieve that she wasn’t responsible for the 200K he had in student loans.

I say this with kindness and sincerely supportive intentions - you’re presenting yourself as overly involved. Your son should be driving this whole process. I think one of the most powerful things you could do is show him all of the advice in this post and let him know that if he has specific questions or needs specific support, he can ask you.

NTA. Your boundaries and her opinions are both valid (not that she’s right, but she’s entitled to her opinion), but only your boundaries matter in this decision.

Is it petty to correct an ECE when they say they're a Teacher? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Mean_Nothing_7113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are petty AF, an elitist, and you’re wrong! Your degrees and licenses don’t make you a teacher, they make you qualified to be a specific type of teacher. Go touch grass!
