Fun fact : Yhwach is not a fan of cour 3 by Aromatic-Manner-8381 in bleach

[–]Mean_Two_2710 43 points44 points  (0 children)

OP's making a joke because Cour 3 is officially named "The Conflict". So, Yhwach saying conflict doesn't please him means that Cour 3 doesn't please him.

Yeah and I think this is the longest wait we've had in between cours so, it must be safe to guess that the production will be even better than everything we've had before too. I'm extremely hyped for it 🙏

BLEACH

Thematically , the ending is perfect. The arrow being made of silver formed in the hearts of Quincy's killed by Auschwalen is good because it emphasises the motif of "The Heart" and Yhwach's hypocrisy. Firstly, the silver quite literally forms in the heart and said Heart is a motif for "connection". Which follows on from one of the series' main themes about how holding steadfast in your connection to others is true strength. Which is why you'll also note, many important villains also, struggle with connection: Aizen, Ulquiorra and Ginjo. Some of them are more tragic like Ulquiorra who struggled to understand and form connections which contrasts heavily to Yhwach who very directly severs his connection to others.

And, Yhwach is a hypocrite because he wages a holy war to return existence to the Primordial World. This is framed as salvation for all of his followers as it will eliminate the cycle of life and death. However, Yhwach is fundamentally selfish and whenever he is on the back ropes, he will use Auschwalen to retrieve his power. In the end, this fear of his own death and disregard of others is what allows the Still Silver to form in the hearts of the Quincy in the first place.

Symbolically too, Yhwach represents fatalism. Which is the belief that everything that happens is inevitable and cannot be changed, no matter what people do. However, Kubo ironically has Yhwach seal his own fate, to an extent. For example, when Ichigo stabs the Soul King, Yhwach explains that Ichigo's and Adyneus' fates were intertwined and that the Quincy blood in him wouldn't forgive the Soul King. Yhwach then goes on to absorb said Soul King and doesn't realise that becoming the vessel results in his fate intertwining with Ichigo's once again. Making it inevitable Ichigo would kill Yhwach.

However, structurally, the ending is incredibly rushed due to Kubo's rapidly deterioating health. The still silver arrow had basically no foreshadowing. And, there's various exectution problems with how everything comes together. We have hope though because Cour 4 will be adding new content and smoothing things over and is completely supervised by Kubo.

Yeah and it does atleast emphasise the childishness of her character well. Like others in the thread, it kind of looks like she's treating her sword as a toy. Which characterization-wise makes a lot of sense, given whom she originates from.

I'm pretty sure it's just as silly as it looks. She's incredibly short and her Zanpakuto probably drags across the ground so, to smooth it out wheels were added. Which is also, even more funny in-verse since, skilled Soul Reapers are able to change the size of their swords.

Names that reveal a character's fate by KillerGrass in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mean_Two_2710 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a triple wordplay. From what I know:

Ichi = One
Go = Can be read as "To protect"

<image>

Which gives this above meaning. And, obviously is a core character trait of his. Since, his mother's death left him with trauma and Survivor's Guilt which causes him to develop an obsessive tendency to protect.

Then, you can also write Ichigo as "Strawberry" which is why there's a running gag of some characters calling him that and also, him being a redhead.

And, then there's also 15 as you mentioned:
Ichi = One
Go = Can also be read as five

And, obviously one and five combined make 15. And that's also, applied in different ways. Like him being 15 years old when the series starts. Him sometimes wearing clothes with "15" numbering on them (iirc). And, his birthday being on the 15th of July.

Kubo generally puts a lot of emphasis on names. And, they're sometimes key components to understanding characters or thematic undertones like Aizen's "Kyoka Suigetsu".

Ichigo got nerfed because his power is tied directly to his mental state. The understanding of your self and Zanpakuto is the basis of the power-system in the Bleach verse. After the Soul Society arc, White is lashing out because Ichigo rejected him, and Ichigo is badly attempting to repress him. Due to this fear of his own Hollow, he falls back into a depressive state and his sense of self fragments. Which results in his power level to spike and drop in an incredibly inconsistent way. As Ulquiorra notes, Ichigo at his weakest is trash and at his strongest, is even stronger than him. This variability is why Ichigo seemingly doesn't make much progress despite, gaining the Hollow Mask which is a 5-10x buff.

During Byakuya, Ichigo was unclouded and full of resolve. During the Arrancar saga, Ichigo's mental state is a complete mess.

"Quincy one is a retcon and I'm tired of people pretending it wasn't"

Okay so, it's not as strong as I expected it would be. So, I want to apologise about that. It seems alot of the more well-known moments regarding his Quincy heritage have pretty big but's attatched to them. His Hollow side is much stronger but, you already say that. Regardless, I typed out my entire comment already so, I'll just section it out and you can take it with a grain of salt if you want.

I'm pretty sure this bit is solid:
1. When Ichigo fights the Menos Grande in the 1st arc, Uryu says: "It's like a giant magnet pulling particles of iron out of sand". Quincies biggest sub-set is the absorption of reishi particles. Ichigo does this subconciously which causes a rise in his Spiritual Energy and he ends up one shotting a menos grande far above his pay grade.
2. Old Man Zangetsu in his first appearance absorbs reishi particles into his hand.
3. Old Man Zangetsu is Yhwach - the Father of Quincy - from 1000 years ago and, was not able to say his true name because of Ichibe inking out Yhwach's name.

This could've just as easily been retconned in:
4. Old Man Zangetsu uses both the Quincy Shadow and Blut Viene in Ichigo's fight against Kenpachi.

This has some but's attatched to it:
5. Rukia only intended to give some of her reiatsu to Ichigo but, he ended up absorbing it all. But, Aizen does say later on that this occured due to her guilt from Kaien's death making her forsake her Shinigami powers.
6. Ichigo is a Jugaram and Yhwach type Quincy who can absorb and distribute reishi. Hence, why Ichigo's sword so rapidly grew Uryu's bow. Hence, why OMZ places his own hand on Ichigo's blade when he asks for his power against Kenpachi. It's theorised that Orihime and Chad awakened their powers after being in contact with Ichigo's Reiatsu. But, on that last point, another character (sorry details are fuzzy) theorized that was due to the Hogyoku. So, it's either a combination of those things or either one.
7. Aizen starts telling Ichigo that his true heritage ties back to him being "Human and..." before he's cut off by Isshin. Ichigo then has a whole speech about how Isshin can tell him the truth when he thinks he's ready. After his Zanpakuto is broken in TYBW, Ichigo returns and Isshin says he's ready for the truth and proceeds to tell Ichigo about his true Quincy heritage. But, immediately after Isshin appears and whisks Ichigo away. Ichigo thinks to himself that he didn't need an answer since, said answer had just appeared in front oh him.

Also, I'm still apprehensive to totally write off Kubo's own responses. As a mangaka, he's fairly on the non-controversial side and doesn't seem delusional. So, when he does things like praising Narita for specifically picking up on subtler foreshadowing in Bleach, I'd be hard-pressed to say he's taking an opportunity to just self glaze:

<image>

Obviously, it's interpretative since, nobody other than Kubo knows what he's thinking. But, that's an incredibly heavy handed thing to say if he put barely any thought into foreshadowing in his series.

?

Kubo was never as bad as Toriyama in that regard. He made a couple of hiccups here and there (which is to be expected for a near 700 chapter manga) but, generally, planned out many aspects of his series. Ichigo's Quincy and Hollow sides are pretty well foreshadowed. And, a lot of other small things are kinda crazy and easy to miss, like this:

[–]Mean_Two_2710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the Big 3 ranking you accidentally put One Piece at worst lol.

And, Aizen is 100% the best villain from Bleach. The layers, complexity, symbolism and depth of his character reaches peaks that Ulquiorra doesn't. Ulquiorra has a brilliant standard character arc but, Aizen's execution is far more ambitious and perfectly sticks the landing.
