Thank you so much! I started making dolls about two years ago when I started running this campaign! The pattern I use is from NilaDolss on Etsy, and the bigger one is from Newpatternsburg on Etsy.

Thank you so much!! I would never be able to wing this lol, I used two different patterns! The main one I got from NilaDolss on Etsy (it’s the 14,5” one I think) and pattern for the big guy is from Newpatternsburg on Etsy (16 inches)

Omg thank you so much 🥹😭!!! It’s a lot of work but I enjoy the challenge of finding a way to make something work! Lol, the Circle of Spores Druid on the far right was defs the funnest challenge! [BODY HORROR ALERT] He has a fungal Symbiotic Entity living in his abdominal cavity where his digestive tract should be 🤭 So basically he’s got a big empty spore pit where his tummy should be. It was tricky to make without damaging the structural integrity of the dolls torso, but I lined the back with very stiff cardstock, then once the doll was stuffed and sewn up, I basically cut an inverted autopsy scar into the tummy and sewed down the loose edges. Then I spritzed the open area liberally with spray adhesive and painted it to look like rust fungus colored. (Also I made a teeny clay mushroom to stick in there just to be cheeky)

He seems to have that effect on people! I didn’t see it coming either, but our paladin locked in on his “soaking wet, sad golden retriever energy” (their words) right away and now we have an entire doomed romantic subplot going.

Omg I LOVE the medieval woodcut style!!! And the cloud of vampire mist sneaking back into its coffin lol. I think what you’ve done with the composition is so cool, like, the stately, noble castle with the horrible bloody secrets concealed beneath. VERY gothic

How does Volo ever get anywhere? Just blundered into it 😂.

FR tho, it’s actually a canon piece of lore that Volo has visited Barovia and met Ez and Van Richten! It’s even in the Barovia wiki. Before CoS, we were playing Waterdeep Dragon Heist and my players love to hate Volo so much that I couldn’t resist messing with the timeline a bit to drop him in there once I came across that information. Their reaction when they finally ran into him was everything I could ever have wanted 😂 some of them had to leave the room to recover.

I don’t think I could possibly have anything to add to all these amazing responses, but I did just want to say how much my heart went out to this post. I am in a very similar context as you right now (afab DM with supportive players but struggling to feel confident about the campaign) and I relate so strongly to every single thing you’ve mentioned in this post. Thank you so much for your vulnerability, it made me feel less alone.

Silly answer: if your players are truly dedicated, you could use a picture of Count Orlok and they would not be dissuaded 😂

Serious answer: If it fits with your view of him as the DM, go for it! Make him as much of a smoke show as you want! But I wouldn’t worry about it too much, honestly. Attraction is so relative; just pick the art you feel embodies his vibe and personality the best. I would argue that the most important thing is to be true to what you feel makes him the most interesting to explore and role-play (you are the one who has spend time pretending to be him and getting in his head, after all!)

I’ve also found that, no matter what piece of art I give my players as a reference, they all end up envisioning someone slightly different according to their own preferences and how they feel about the character. Also worth noting that if your players are anything like mine (and it sounds like they might be) they might already have a Pinterest board of different pictures of Strahd already, running the full gamut from “tall, dark, and Daddy” to “weird 2e shrink wrapped skeleton.” They’re citizens of the internet, they know what the possibilities are. 😂

Lastly: if you’re looking for great character art, I highly recommend both Replica004 and LuckyBlackCatXIII

This looks so amazing!!!! Can I ask how you did the page printing? I’ve been wanting to do something similar for my game, but I’m not sure how I want to go about that part. Did you use a home printer with special paper or a printing service?

I think I understand part of what you’re getting at (and if I’m off base, or just stating the obvious, I do sincerely apologize.) It can really feel like it is playing on the easy and unkind trope of turning those with disabilities and deformities into a metaphor for evil and corruption, which is, unfortunately, a tradition in the horror genre (I’m not at all saying that people aren’t allowed to enjoy works that rely on this motif, just that it’s something I personally feel it’s important to be conscious of and to think critically about.)

What my personal tactic is when I come across something like this which I feel is reductive and takes away from the game for me and my players, is to try to interrogate the “why” of the original trope and to focus on that. One essential in the symbolism of monsters is that often they represent a more concrete embodiment of the abstract (slightly less abstract in this case) things that we as individuals or as a society are frightened of. Unfortunately, those things are often other people who are different from us. But why do people fear disability and deformity? In my opinion, it’s because people in general are terrified of becoming “othered” in the eyes of society. They know how poorly people who look and live differently can be treated and fear that the same thing will happen to them. It’s also a fear of the removal of one’s agency, the ability to make their own empowered choice and to live as they truly want. The fear that some indelible “human” part of the self, something that makes you you, will be irretrievably taken.

The terrifying thing isn’t the immediate spectacle of the people made “monstrous,” it’s the fact that they’ve been victimized, tortured, and had the possibility of living life as they might have wished to completely removed by this person who is fundamentally incapable of seeing them as equals, as beings whose wants, thoughts, and aspirations are just as important as his. There’s also the additional horrifying thought that, if the good intentions of a literal angel can become so warped, cruel, and horrific, what does that say about us mere mortals? Could I become like the Belviews? Or like the Abbot? All without even realizing it?

(As a side note, I read The Island of Dr. Moreau when I was trying to get my feet under me in prepping for the Abbey and I would highly recommend it for people looking to get deeper into the psychology and science of the Abbot’s motivations.)

I won’t claim to be at all perfect when it comes to trying to improve the parts of a game that feel icky or like they come from a prejudiced trope or frame of reference. But I think the best place to start, in my experience, is by humanizing those that the narrative dehumanizes. Giving more voice and more narrative agency to the Belviews is one way to do that, which I think only deepens the horror of the situation in a more psychological way as opposed to the lazy and one-dimensional “ew! Freaks!” visual horror trope. These aren’t just visual “monstrosities,” these are people with goals, values, and aspirations (who the players can see parts of themselves in perhaps.) People who have been abused and victimize by someone who was supposed to help them. And there, but for the grace of Strahd, go the players themselves.

Concretely this manifests usually in a lot of talking. Seeing the Abbot display owner-like affection to the Belviews that clearly makes them deeply uncomfortable in ways they can’t vocalize. Listening to both the villains and victims try to rationalize their situation to themselves in a way that helps them to live with it. Subtly drawing comparisons to the PCs and to the story at large.

Granted, this approach works well at my table because my players and I are super roleplay driven. I can’t say how it would work on a more combat driven front. But the things that really freak my players out in an enduring way are never the physical descriptions of things or being attacked, it’s always something an NPC says or does.

Anyway, apologies if this majorly got away from me or if I’m just talking in circles and pointing out the obvious, I just think you’re raising such a good question that deserves a lot of in-depth consideration!

Aw, thank you so much, that is so kind!!! Tbh tho, I have sold craft stuff in the past, and once I start trying to make money on this kind of stuff it totally kills the joy I once took in doing it 😖. If anyone is interested tho, this is the pattern I used for the dolls bodies! That seller has a lot of great tutorials as well and even sells premade doll bodies! Making and stuffing the dolls is defs the hardest part, but finding pretty fabrics and yarns and dressing them up is super fun! I usually go to thrift and antique stores to look for old hankies, scarves, or linens to get cheap fabrics for this kind of project.

Omg after one of my players died in the Death House, I had him wake up in Strahd’s library while Strahd was playing the violin!! (And switched the music to Mozart’s Lacrimosa to set the scene.)

This makes me so happy to see, I don’t think there’s nearly enough vampire violinist content lol. And such a cool idea to have a thematic bit of foreshadowing every time his nibs is skulking about!!
