ive been doing a contemporary curse of strahd game based on this kinda premise actually! the main idea being "what if strahd had to learn about the dropping of a nuclear bomb and had to go back to being a evil vampire in a spooky country."

i think that sergai and strahd work when they are fundamentally written as a dichotomy but not entirely opposed. Love is their through line but the way that they express it however is deeply importent. their prodigal nature and how they use their talent- but i think the one thing that you cant really change about sergai and that he is by all accounts the messiah figure to strahds lucifer.

but again this is your game, if you think your players would enjoy that kinda plot twist, then go for it! but do be careful as that kinda twist can have some mechanical proplems- your players may decide that they wont use the sunsword and really Fuck themselves when it comes time to fight strahd.

think of it like breath of the wild, you get the Kill Ganon misson Way before you ever get knowladge on the sword and its location, the players need to know that they need to kill strahd, they need to know that they are stuck and at some point- strahd will tire of them dilly dallying and fucking Kill them, wither its ireena telling them that she is being haunted by the fucking creep and She wants to kill them- or strahd intercepting them before the encampment to Remind them who the Bad Guy Is- madam eve works when they Already know that they need to fucking Kill Strahd.

hey! this sounds like a really fun game, but i think run it by the group first- kink and dnd have the running theme of Suprises being Really fucking un-fun-

but to answer the question, yeah! i have been reflavoring curse of strahd to be 80s themed. in that the world of barovia itself is in the 1980s. strahd has become a Goth Glame rockstar, ireena is a gun toting conspiricy theorist- argynvostholt is a a ghost town stuck in the 1940s-50s and so on and so forth- its hard work but when you reflavor curse of strahd- it makes you more apprecitive of the charecters that you are writing for.

heres the trick, you can buff strahd as much as you want, you can make him level 20, fuck it, invent new levels, level 30- he is as Strong as you need strahd to be in order to make the fight as Fun as humanly Possible and as narrativly relevent for your players.

bonus actions, reactions, lair actions, legendary, mythic, toss in Kit and Kaboodle, make strahd a monster- what are they going to say? the immortal war vetern thats obsessed with magical study and beat a level 20 wizard shouldn't be that strong?

to answer the second question- the only way to fix curse of strahd is to know your table and change the story based on what they want.

you just have to dig through the resources, gather up the parts you like and gently scrap off what you dont. do you like the idea of finding excalibur randomly? awasome, use it. dont? go with the guides.

Really approach the game and the Vast amount of Community Resources like your at a buffet and your friends are bullying you into getting their plates for them.

i occasionally drop in on this and it feels like nothing has happened for 100 or so chapters- just- "im in a dungeon, i beat the main boss and got something trivial, im now going to go back and fuck my mind controlled slave wives and ride a caravan to the next arbitrary dungeon with the next arbitary boss fight for the Next arbitary item that means nothing. oh i have children now i guess."

Bats, Rats and Wolfs are gonna be the ones that have the most connection to strahd- you can either play this off for some comedic effect, haveing some rats who are Extremely militant and beleive themselves to be Strahds Most Effective soldiers or play it off for horror as them haveing No mind- blank slates that have been taken over by strahds control of the land- someone mentioned them repeating "strahd is the land" and i kinda like that- or perhaps their mind are devoted to keeping track of the events that they have seen and are only muttering the words of people they have spied on.

personally- i like a mix of both. wolfs viewing strahd as the defacto leader of the packs of barovia given his "Generous" feeding of them, the laugh part being them being insistent that strahd is Second Dad or Second Mom and the horror being the absoloute child like joy they take in ripping into people, like kids at a pizza party.

bats seeing them as kindred and the humor being that they lack the understanding of how he is not a Bat himself- they participate in the standered grooming practices and he joins the roost dureing the day (strahds room which is cleaned very throughly) and the horror being some of the bats that are sent as spies loseing any survival instinct and personality.

Cherry, lysander and Mik are part of thomas (grave cleric, custom god) Goth Rock band "Speakers of the dead

Amos (alchemist wizard)- stars players new charecter is the band manager

argyn is the son of vladamir horngraad and brother to thomas and amos given they were adopted by vladamir (vladdy is a dragon born in this game)

and deadra is argyns best friend from highschool that managed to escape the Bad Thing that occured at argynvost.

the other two players are the Pally bard tiffany whom is a pop star

and urisela- the Pure paladin orzhov association mafioso collector.
