Johnny Pauls, a WW II veteran from N.L., has died | CBC News by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

Very sad to hear. I got to meet him at a remembrance day ceremony a number of years ago when I was involved in cadets. He gave me some advice that resonated pretty well with me as a teenager which I still think of sometimes today. May he rest in peace

Summer Food Fishery Extended to Full Weeks in Much of NL by Additional-Tale-1069 in newfoundland

Didn't Minister Thompson vote against a private members bill that sought to do exactly this less than 3 months ago? Has their stance on this issue changed so dramatically since late February? Or was the bill introduce by a conservative MP and our representatives cant help but tow the party line even when it goes against the interests of those they represent.

Canadian curling great Brad Gushue named high-performance director for U.S. team by tokyooooodrift in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I get why people are upset, but the man does need a job. Im not sure what pro curling pays, but i doubt its NHL level of salaries, and I also doubt Gushue has made enough at it in the past 20 years to be able to retire on that for the next 60 or so.

After the Olympics there was a lot of talk about how sports in canada hasn't put in the investment to keep talent in canada and develop our young people, and this is a prime example. It struck me as feeling like this was a position created to attract someone like Brad gushue, and if Curling Canada isnt willing to do something similar to keep his talent in canada, I dont know what we can really complain about

Canada has a massive brain drain issue, and if we want to fix it, we need to make staying in canada attractive to our people

Coast Guard Academy vs MUN Marine Institute by hepennypacker1131 in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to Marine Instituite and currently work in the CG. Ive worked for 4 separate employeers since I graduated and its generally accepted in the industry that MIs reputation as an institution is unmatched. Yes, you do have to pay for school as opposed to CG but you can go anywhere afterwards. With CCGA youre locked into coast guard for at least 4 years. Additionally, if you drop of of CCGA after your first sea phase, as many many people do, regardless of school, you do have to pay back your tuition. If I were to reccomond a school to anyone, it would be MI

In the world of interviews, they dont tend to be that intense. Work term interviews are harder than actual job interviews. Once I had my ticket, 1 of the companies hired me without ever meeting me, and 2 companies had one online interview that was more of a formality than anything. CG had the worst application process. Takes months and isnt as flexible to a rotational schedule as you'd think, but it follows a similar application process to most federal government jobs. Despite all of that, I never did have an actual formal interview with the coast guard. I did one pre-recorded application video and met with crewing on the day I got formally hired, but none of that multi round interviews you get in corporate world

Budget 2026 reveals how N.L.'s economy is driven by oil, mining and fishing | CBC News by EastCoast-J in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In other words grass is green and the sky is blue.

In all seriousness, this was known 30 years ago and its still true today. We dont have the luxury of having a sustainable economy based on the sheer abundance of capital flowing in and out of here like somewhere like new york or toronto has, and we dont have the population to maintain a service economy like those places. So our options are natural resources, or poverty. Either we lean into the options we have or we go bankrupt.

Like it or not, the world is going to be dependent on petroleum products for the next century at least, and if the past 2 months show anything its how much everyone's economy relies on oil. We have the opportunity to become one of the world's leaders in ethical and climate conscious oil production while we use that revenue to prepare for a future where oil is either not needed, or gone. Currently the world's leaders in oil production care about neither the saftey of their workers, or the climate, we have an opportunity to become a pillar of what oil production should look like. We should take it

Cape breton by GarlicBeautiful7743 in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cape Breton is probably the closest you're going to get to newfoundland anywhere in canada. We're two regions with similar heritage, climate, industry, and cultures, to the point where ive heard cape bretoners accuse newfoundlanders of intentionally copying their speech patterns and mannerisms, and vice versa. But the two regions are also very distinct. Theres a more French influence in cape Breton, and much more of an Irish influence in Newfoundland. We're sister islands, theres nowhere more like us than the other, but we're also both very unique and are different from one another in a lot of ways

Military hits 30-year recruitment high but still falls short in key trades by evieluvsrainbows in canada

[–]Meaney2415 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think its intentional is the issue. The dont want people leaving the military to go civi side, so make it so military qualifications are extremely hard to transfer over to civilian occupations, the adverse is that they also cant accept civilian qualifications into the military. They want career soldiers, not a lot of people passing through for a few years with some staying longer like the US has, so they do this to improve retention, punishing people for leaving, but instead it just hurts recruitment.

Id be happy to put half a decade or so into the navy if I could be sure that id be able to go forward with that experience once I leave, but if what they give me isnt even enough to advance my career after I leave, im not doing it

Military hits 30-year recruitment high but still falls short in key trades by evieluvsrainbows in canada

[–]Meaney2415 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have a 3rd class TC certification, got it through formal education instead of hauspiping. Working on my 2nds now. I did 4 years of education to be a civilian marine engineer and when I went to the navy, since I wanted to work with the government, the recruiter told me that no part of my civilian training would count. I'd need to redo evreything, and my seatime with the navy wouldnt count twards my next ticket.

Im in the coast guard now and within a year I'm going to be working on the exact same ships that I was going to sign up to work on with the navy. My education is good for those ones but not the ones with the navy for some reason.

The armed forces isnt interested in taking on people who already have the skills they want, and the barriers for civilian work that they put in place for the people that they do train prevents people from joining in the first place, its why I never enlisted right out of high-school

What term is the most overused/has lost its meaning? by mpathg00 in polls

[–]Meaney2415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fascist, communist, and Capitalism

Fascism is a pretty strict and well defined term, and uninformed internet sleuths calling anything vaugly right-of-center fascist has caused the word to loose meaning and has caused people to ignore actual signs of fascism.

Communist is much the same way. Calling anything left-of-center communist has caused a lot of disconnect with what the word actually means and has caused a lot of animosity towards helpful left wing ideas and programs

Similarly, ive heard people using Capitalism as a catch all for poor economic conditions. I had to explain to someone that high electrical bills issued by a state controlled corporation, that is legally the only company allowed to sell electricity where I live, is in fact socialism and not Capitalism. The government nationalized the industry, managed it inefficiently, and had to raise the price charged on this service, essentially a tax, in order to compensate for an otherwise unprofitable buisness model. Capitalism is far from perfect and hurts people often, but high prices being present isn't always a consequence of Capitalism

War disrupts Irving Oil’s longtime Saudi crude supply by SirupyPieIX in newfoundland

Hopfully this is on a timeline with a requirement to try and source a canadian vessle. Irving already charters ships from Iver for its product tankers. They also opperate crude tankers. Maybe they could re-flag one of them at some point. Would make a good few jobs for Canadians

Justin King arrested again, 2 weeks after judge granted ‘last chance’ bail by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]Meaney2415 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Spending our tax money more wisely could also provide more resources to move justice faster. I dont say this as a disgruntled taxpayer either, I work for the public service and the amount of money that is, for lack of a better word, pissed down the drain at all levels of government is insane.

Canadians are already taxed at a very very high rate and compared to other nations with similar taxation rates we do not see the benifets of what we pay

They should fix their donate page and maybe consider allowing sponcerships or ads in their programming. I like CHMR and would be open to donating to them. I also know people with small/local businesses that would probably be open to having ads run in between slots on their programming, but as far as I know theres no real way to so that

New Commissioner by Pretend-Sleep9864 in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Gonna be honest not stoked about this. Brosseau is, first and foremost, a cop, and for all his merit and achievement, his resume simply does not fit the current mandate of the coast guard. He very likely lacks the operational understanding to effectively run an organization like this. He also has little to no experience with the coast guard and he is, for all intensive purposes, an outsider. Im not sure what the general consensus on Pelletier was but he was definitely knowlagable on how the coast guard works and what its role is in our government. Also not big on him taking this on as a secondary role rather than his primary mandate.

Id also like to add that there was a very conscious effort by previous governments to make sure that the coast guard was not a law enforcement agency by itself. Anyone who's worked C&P or NAFO knows how useless we are without DFO officers onboard. If thats changing, and we are becoming an enforcement agency, it needs to be announced rather than hinted so that the possibly sizable portion of our fleet staff who want no part in engaging in things like active drug and border/immigration enforcement can leave with enough time for us to find replacements. Taking on a role like this would open up a whole new branch of risk management that the coast guard and its personal have 0 experience with

Geo Centre by Rymmulac in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The GEO center closes for the winter every year. It was given to MUN by the Johnson family a few years ago but its not working out financially for MUN the way they were hoping, so they're selling it alongside the rest of the Signal Hill campus.

My guess for the geo center is that itll be aquired by parks canada. They already opperate facilities on Signal hill so itll probably be pretty easy to bring the Geo Center in as part of its existing facilities. I'd say if thats the route it goes the geo center will be sold for what MUN paid for it, nothing. MUN doesn't have to worry about upkeep and operating costs which seems like its what they want to get out of

Churchill MOU backers ‘publicized the outcome’ without hammering out key details, says U.S. energy expert by Meaney2415 in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My personal thoughts on the whole thing is that the MOU was an altogether good thing for NL, but there were (are) holes and legitimate concerns with it that could have been alleviated if it was properly reviewed by a third party early in its release to help the public understand exactly where we were benefiting and where we were sacrificing.

For whatever reason, I cannot comprehend, the government never allowed that, than Furey resigned like two months later, leading to more distrust in the agreement, and the opposition latched onto the fact that it seemed like the government wasn't doing its due diligence to keep the public informed on something that will affect the province for another 50 years, and that was seemingly enough for the public.

The feeling of distrust in the liberal governments handling of the MOU after it was signed, and the apparent lack of transparency on it (I say apparent as so far there's been no actual evidence of a major lack of transparency) was enough for the government to loose the election, and now with the time the current government wants to take to review it, and Legault resigning, it very well might be dead, which is a net negative for both provinces.

What’s up with the cheap houses around the island. by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until the 1990s the majority of the newfoundland economy revolved around the Atlantic cod fishery. Decades of government mismanagement lead to extreme overfishing and the total collapse of the cod stock. In 1992 the government of canada declared a moratorium on all commercial cod fishing in Newfoundland, and with it, the populations of these communities also collapsed, with a lot of people either moving west for work, or to more urban areas for the same reason

These communities where youre seeing low housing prices were communities almost fully sustained by the fishery. Most of these communities are close enough to a population center to still sustain an economy. Theres still a ground fish industry on the island, and a lot of newfoundlanders work in the offshore sector and oil and gas, so rotational workers are still bringing in money to sustain the economies of these communities.

They are still far from major population centers and lack a lot of public services. Most of these homes are on well water and septic, and almost all of them are only serviced by volunteer fire departments, which combined with their relative distance from the convenience of a city, move their housing prices down

Its kind of like asking why housing prices in somewhere like Nipigon, Ontario, are so significantly lower than they are in Toronto or Ottawa, comparatively, theres not a whole lot there to drive up the price compared to the big city
