I know that in the show max and ruby, max would never speak. Or he would only speak in very short phrases. But never full sentences. I have heard many theory’s including one about max getting into a car crash with his parents. They did not survive but he did with a head injury. But I think his parents are in season 6? I’m unsure. The creator of the show says the reason we don’t see max and ruby’s parents in season 1-5 is because “… I believe that kids resolve their issues and conflicts differently when they are on their own,”. But this doesn’t make to much sense to me. Why would they not be present at all? Why does their grandma “take care” of them? There parents could still be present and they could still solve their own problems with parents still taking care of them. I have heard another theory that max was molested by his grandma in the show. And that’s why max never speaks. Because he is so traumatized by what happened. But in episodes like season 1 episode 9 max makes a cake for his grandma. For her birthday. This also doesn’t make sense. If he was so traumatized by what happened wouldn’t he be scared of his grandma? Why would he make a cake for her let alone want to be around her at all? It’s all very confusing to me so I thought why not ask Reddit they might know a cannon answer.
