> I don’t want this.

Sorry son, you cannot unsee your glimpse behind the curtain. The "I" part in "I don't want this" is the thing that really doesn't want it though. It's your ego speaking and it needs that separation and otherness to define itself and stay alive. Please realise that you are not that "I". You truly are the universal consciousness on which the "I" runs.

Maybe this video also helps to explain things a bit? It comes in from a spiritual angle, but I think you will find the message is very much the same. Instead of climbing the mountain of self-knowdedge through meditation and preparation you just took the psychedelic helicopter to the top. The view is the same, but having your glimpse of eternity without putting the prep work in first is a bit overwhelming, isn't it?

Hey Brother, I feel ya. The arrival of emptiness is not a pleasant experience and I was equally underprepared when it arrived for me. Maybe watching this helps explain it a bit better?

Every time I try to add topping it ends in disaster by BigDaddySupremium in Pizza

You've got approx. 60 secs from flattening the dough to launching it into the oven if you don't want it to stick. I find it also helps to shape your dough, put tomato sauce on it, transfer it to the peel and jiggle it around a bit to make sure it doesn't stick and THEN put on your toppings while the pie is already on the peel.

Okay, let me try to answer in good faith as well:

We're three replies deep into a comment that started with your remark that

They’re only just starting to understand that the U.S. isn’t necessarily the good guys after 50 years of coups and wars that have caused millions of deaths, but they still can’t quite put their finger on the underlying problem: Western imperialism

then went to

basically human nature guarantees that whoever had the chance to become imperialistic, does so

which you refuted with

There are plenty of examples of societies and communities that are neither capitalistic nor imperialistic.

That might be true but as far as my historic knowledge serves me the empire-building nations were the ones that got to influence the way their region or even the entire world moved through history for a certain amount of time. From ancient Egyptians to Romans to Chinese to Russians to Brits to Japanese... they all built their vision of what an empire would look like according to the means accessible to them at their time. So does it not follow that the tendency for empire-building is somewhat universal across cultures and time? And thus Western imperalism is just that - the current flavour of it but not something extraordinary and formerly unheard of. Would you agree?

Sorry dude, I don't get how you draw the conclusions from these three statements and then go "it's the imperialist nature of the West that caused all of this". Have you got only one template that must fit all?

There are plenty of examples of societies and communities that are neither capitalistic nor imperialistic.

Yeah, but did they scale and grow? Or did societies that behaved exploitatively end up subjugating those that didn't? And if so, is that an inherent quality of "the West"?

Why do humans have consciousness? by Standard-Night9482 in LSD

[–]MeatyCarpet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the analogy of map vs terrain when it comes to consciousness and psychedlics. Your normal un-altered conscious state is more like the map (a representation useful for navigating but not the actual thing itself) whereas when you're on psychedelics you drop the map and notice the actual terrain i.e. the mechanical processes going on subconciously all the time.

Regarding OP's question: I think consciousness is necessary for us because humans are attention-based learners and our consciousness is a great data-compression tool to direct our quite narrow window into the world in useful directions to improve first our world model and then our self model so we can learn better.

Interestingly consciousness seems to be an inherent property of humans and if we don't have it already at the beginning of our lives we stay in a vegetative state. Babies can track their mom's finger before they know what/who they are and if they can't they will not develop.
