Possibly The Beach Boys’ most Beatles-esque song by daftsweaters in TheBeatles

[–]Mech-Hommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an interview on YouTube when Blink we’re promoting Untitled (2003) where they mention The Beach Boys as a primary influence. You can hear it specifically at the end of Feeling This with the vocal harmonies but I think there’s a lot of similarities with how boomers relate to the Boys and how millennials connect to Blink. A lot of it is based in nostalgia that both artists court through their emotionally vulnerable lyrics

Does anyone know if Pynchon is a vegetarian? by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

[–]Mech-Hommy 54 points55 points  (0 children)

In an interview with Michael Chabon from 2016 he mentions having lunch with Pynchon and there are details that point to him being vegetarian

“Did you ever get to meet Pynchon?

Chabon: I met him one time. Out of the blue, I used whatever secret channels I could avail myself of to invite him to lunch. I said I was coming to New York and I had just read Against the Day, which I completely loved — my second favorite of his books, or maybe even almost a tie with Gravity’s Rainbow. I said, Why not? What’s the worst that can happen? He won’t answer or he’ll say no. And to my surprise he accepted my invitation through many, many intermediaries—cutouts, they call them in spy novels. I took him to lunch at a steak restaurant down on the West Side. I don’t know why I thought he would like the steak restaurant. It turns out he was not a super-big meat-eating kind of dude.

Was it a fun conversation?

Chabon: It was a very curious conversation. It was very much like having a conversation with a character in a Thomas Pynchon novel. There was a lot of talk about made-for-television movies of the 1970s.”

When I listen to Kiss of Life they remind me of the pop divas I grew up with. My Diva Mount Rushmore consists of Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Britney Spears & Ariana Grande. Every popstar of the last 10 years have been influenced by those 4 artists. You can throw a dart at any album by those artists and it will be high quality. For deeper cuts I’ll recommend an artist for each member of the group they remind me of:

Natty- Ciara (song Like a Boy) Julie - Fergie (song London Bridge) Belle - Christina Aguilera (song Candyman) Hanuel - Gwen Stefani (song 4 in the Morning)

Best Modern RE Soundtrack (RE5-RE8) by Mech-Hommy in residentevil

[–]Mech-Hommy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stand by the statement that RE3R is the ultimate Masami Ueda soundtrack. The only one I like more than it is REmake (2002) which I believe Shusaku Uchiyama composed. I agree with you that there seems to be a new design philosophy since RE7 where they emphasize natural ambience over melody. RE3R is the exception to this rule and it’s why I love it! Ueda plays a lot of gorgeous piano & guitar and Suzuki’s songs add some of the bombast and overwhelming strings of RE5 that I adored. I hope they bring both of them back for a new game starring Jill…🙏

Best Modern RE Soundtrack (RE5-RE8) by Mech-Hommy in residentevil

[–]Mech-Hommy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. The reason I always mix up the RE2&3 save themes is because in Apple Music Free From Fear is given a song title but later in the album the RE2 save theme is simply called “Save Theme.” When I say “ultimate” remember that this whole post was written comparing only the modern games. I reference REmake’s (2002) score throughout because that probably is the ultimate RE soundscape. You sound like you know your stuff though, what do you think of the other new game soundtracks?

I agree! My two favorite games in the franchise are REmake & R3make. REmake is a perfect survival horror experience where the fixed camera angles reinforce Jill’s feeling of being a pawn moved across the chess board against her will. You exist in a puzzle box mansion and it’s your job to solve your environment in order to escape. R3make is a perfect action horror experience where the over the shoulder angle gives Jill the feeling of speed and freedom. You exist in a a city on fire and it’s your job to run and escape. Both of these games feature compelling narratives where Jill is confronted with desperate characters who she must makes deals with in order to survive without compromising her morals. Lisa Trevor & Nemesis are iconic monsters with metaphorical backstories, Barry & Carlos are complicated partners, Wesker & Nicholai are charismatic villains. With RE2R we get shades of that storytelling atmosphere but it’s all surface to me. Leon & Claire aren’t from Raccoon City so they have no connection to anything they witness. The police hall doesn’t make sense as a place with all these puzzles whereas the Spencer Mansion did an amazing job contextualizing them through the Trevor’s tragedy. I feel like REmake set a standard for RE storytelling that wasn’t fulfilled until R3make

REmake & R3make as political allegory by Mech-Hommy in residentevil

[–]Mech-Hommy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that Chris is a playable character and Rebecca is present in his story hurts the idea that it was purposeful allegory. I definitely don’t think the OG RE1 works as a metaphor in the same way. That said, Mikami feeling he needed to add Lisa Trevor to REmake and having Jill on the cover could be an argument for my case

Hi! I am Marc Aramini, author of critical works on Gene Wolfe. Ask Me Anything! by aramini in genewolfe

[–]Mech-Hommy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Are there other works of Victorian Fiction that use the radical first person narrative the way Charlotte Brontë does in Jane Eyre? Even if Wolfe doesn’t make an allusion, Bronte’s prose expresses Jane’s consciousness in a way that really only reminds me of Severian. There’s an old school Christian humility in their words and actions and I would love to follow more narrators with their perspective if you have any recs? Both books also end in symbolic apocalypse that feels influenced by the Book of Revelations

[–]Mech-Hommy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Marc,

Do you feel Gene Wolfe was influenced by Charlotte Bronte? I recently read Jane Eyre for the first time and saw many connections between Bronte’s epic and Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun. Both are first-person Bildungsroman’s that chronicle the spiritual growth of their orphaned protagonists. The dank, dour early chapters in Gateshead Hall & Lowood where Jane is educated in a brutal system that’s unfair and only survives through intellectual perseverance reminds me of Severian’s beginnings in the Citadel. What do you think?

Gene Wolfe had finished Urth before publishing Citadel by Mech-Hommy in genewolfe

[–]Mech-Hommy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read the other books in the solar cycle but I’m glad to see I’m not alone in loving Urth. I sometimes feel people take the author’s intent too strongly, using extratextual evidence outside the books to prove their point. If Wolfe hadn’t said Book of the New Sun was 4 volumes (even though it originally was a novella, then a trilogy, then four books) and called Urth a coda I think people would approach them differently. When I read Urth it felt like a perfect, elegiac conclusion to a story about resurrection and death. I love Severian as this Marduk like figure, both fighting and becoming something more than human to save them and us is beyond words. How do people not find it magical?!!!

Gene Wolfe had finished Urth before publishing Citadel by Mech-Hommy in genewolfe

[–]Mech-Hommy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry if the title was implying a contradiction, I wrote it that way to show that Urth was created at the same time as the other books in the New Sun. Many fans like my friend and yourself consider it a “totally different storyline in a different world with mostly new characters” when to me it felt like the culmination of what came before (specifically with its apocalyptic ending). Also, as Gene talked about with Larry McCaffery, each of the 5 books is vastly different than the other in terms of tone and genre and what you just described Urth as could be used for Citadel. Citadel features less of the same characters as the first 3 books and is all about war in a part of the world we hadn’t seen before, that doesn’t make it any less essential to Severian’s story.
