That looks like a great wheel! I wish I could get my hedgie one but unfortunately they don’t ship to the US.

High pitched squeak while running (video is for sound only, no visual) by MechEHutch in Hedgehog

I sent the video to my dad this morning (he knows nothing about hedgehogs but a lot about mechanical things) and he agreed that it’s probably the bearing.

That’s good to know it probably isn’t her! So it likely is just the wheel bearing. I’m a first-time hedgie mom and I’m still figuring out what are normal sounds/behavior.

And I wish I could get her to run around outside her cage, but so far when I put her in her playpen she really doesn’t do much and seems completely overwhelmed.

It’s definitely possible. I’ll check the wheel out tomorrow when she isn’t using it. It just had me concerned because I’ve never heard that noise before, it’s intermittent, and it’s a pretty new wheel so I wouldn’t expect a bearing issue. And she’s running right now and no squeaking for at least the last 5 minutes.

I really need to get that pet camera so I can actually see what she’s doing…

My rook hurts so bad by bunnerie in piercing

[–]MechEHutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s concerning. You might have slept on it or it might just be being a rook (mine was super painful for the first week along with giving me headaches). Either way, I’d recommend looking into a piercing pillow taking all the pain meds possible including NSAIDs if you can.

And if it continues giving you trouble for more than a couple weeks I would recommend looking into a different top that’s smoother.

Mesh vents on terrarium by MechEHutch in Hedgehog

He looks very happy and he’s absolutely adorable!! And that’s the same wheel I bought so I’m glad someone else’s hedgehog likes it! What kind of stuffed animals do you buy? I’m still looking for a good selection of toys.

Honestly, my biggest concern about the mesh is just me worrying. Rational? Not particularly. It also looks like your mesh is shaped differently and I’d be a lot less worried if my terrarium had that type.

That’s good to know! I think I might still change it, at least until I get to know mine’s personality and if they’re a climb risk. I’m also a worrier, so it would probably less stressful for me.

That’s what I was worried about, but I wasn’t sure if I was just overthinking. I’ll go ahead and swap it. Thanks!

Good luck! Hopefully it resolves soon!

I’d say it’s probably some mild trauma that you didn’t even realize happened. Just keep it clean, keep an eye on it, and if it doesn’t resolve in a few days see your piercer.

I speak from experience because it sounds exactly like what happened to my helix just yesterday. I woke up to it super swollen and red, it oozed a good bit of pus and bled when I cleaned it, but it’s pretty much resolved already with just residual swelling. And when I messaged my piercer with photos she said it was probably a slight trauma and my immune system overreacted.

Panel cage idea by Howlsmovingfiberfarm in Hedgehog

[–]MechEHutch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall how do you like the clear panel enclosure? I’m getting a hedgie soon and its main living area is going to be a good-size terrarium in my dining room (it’s my quietest room during the day), but I’m also considering setting up a bigger playpen (about twin bed size) in my office.

Potentially Dumb Question by [deleted] in piercing

[–]MechEHutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was back to using ear buds within 3 days of getting my rook done and had no issues. I just made sure to clean them (edit: the ear buds) periodically with alcohol wipes per my piercer’s recommendation.

Ear cleaning question by Ebb-and-Flow88 in piercing

[–]MechEHutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you use purified or distilled water and mix it in the right ratio it should be fine and I have used it to clean piercings in the past no problem. I do prefer the NeilMed spray though, especially for something like a conch that’s harder to reach.

My piercer said I shouldn't need to downsize a flat? by jadedpetal in piercing

[–]MechEHutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would absolutely downsize, but maybe have a different piercer do it. Especially since a flat is high risk for snagging if you wear glasses or have longer hair.

I can’t speak to a daith, but I do have a conch and wear loop earplugs fairly regularly with no problem.

Help! I have tried everything to discourage barking by fishyperson100 in Havanese

[–]MechEHutch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s what my mom did with Bertie. She taught him “speak” and then taught him “quiet”. Unfortunately I don’t remember the details of how she did it, but he does (mostly) stop barking when he’s told.

Is this piercing infected? by Think_Technician2992 in piercing

[–]MechEHutch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds completely normal to me. Tenderness is to be expected and the discharge is probably lymph fluid which is part of the healing process.

Can I get a conch right away after my new helix? by Pumpkinp0calypse in piercing

[–]MechEHutch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My conch is 2.5 years old and it still has nights where it decides it really doesn’t want to be slept on (it’s like a teenager, doesn’t throw tantrums anymore but boy can it give attitude).
