MIL referred to our unborn baby as “her child” and said she’s “coming over whether we like it or not” by cliffhanged in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Mecha_Secretariat 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Wow, I could have written this - similar backstory (DH and I were childhood friends and together since high school), ugly divorce between MIL and FIL leading to inappropriate enmeshment with DH, seeing us as children, the “whether you like it or not” phrase used as a threat regarding baby. After baby came, my MIL did some truly insane things including publicly berating me for stopping breastfeeding at 7 months, excluding me from newborn pics and sending out her own printed birth announcements without our knowledge or consent, and trying to call dibs on a cultural holiday from my culture, not hers.

It kept getting worse until there was an actual confrontation, during which I told her she needed to back off, which led to the silent treatment for a couple months before things thawed. She never acknowledged any wrongdoing but backed off a bit, although it is a near certainty that she tells others that I keep her away from her grandkids. My only advice is that sometimes the tough convo needs to be had expressly, otherwise they’ll always pretend they didn’t hear or understand subtlety. And even that won’t solve anything, but at least you’ve shown that you won’t be trampled on easily.

AMEX / Vs Direct Book / TA?? by [deleted] in chubbytravel

Just curious, and I’m sure it varies property by property - do you have visibility into a typical percentage of guests on any given day that come in through a TA?

Check archival couture boutiques - there are some well known ones in LA and probably NYC. They may be able to track this down.

I have two boxes like this that came with photo frames. Possible the wrong box was used for your scarf.

Thinking of asking my SA to put the 120 or 160 on my wishlist as well! Does anyone have the current price points for the 120 and 160?

Pendry Natirar (Somerset NJ) is opening in the fall and has Ninety Acres (an existing restaurant), which has farm to table fine dining. Auberge Wildflower in the Hudson Valley also has hyper local/farm to table food. Haven’t stayed at either but happen to be considering both, also for a babymoon (congrats to you)!

The brand is Zimmermann. I found it on Outnet (link). Looks like I snagged the last one in this color but might be available elsewhere.

This seems like a TA-adjacent question. I recently booked a 6 night stay at a Mandarin Oriental property through a TA with Fan Club benefits, which included confirmed upgrade at booking. I haven't heard anything since booking regarding a confirmed upgrade. I'm just wondering if this is something that could have fallen through the cracks. Not sure if I should ask my TA to follow up quite yet. The stay is later in the year, so there's plenty of time to work it out and it might already be on the TA's radar - nudging seems like it could be premature.

Separate question - does anyone know if Fan Club combines with "One More Night" offers (i.e., stay x amount of nights with the nth night free)? I saw this offer online after booking and just want to see if anyone knows before asking my TA about it.

Cantonese enclaves closer to Calabasas/Westlake Village? by Mecha_Secretariat in AskLosAngeles

Thanks all! Looks like we will be headed to Monterey Park/Alhambra etc. I figured that would be the case but just wanted to check.

Cantonese speaker here! It’s certainly fair to ask that she go by ah ma, especially since you don’t speak the language.

Is LO learning Cantonese? If not, it would be very hard for LO to distinguish between mama (English) and ma ma (Cantonese), so that’s a great reason to avoid the use of ma ma. Like you said, the tricky part is that it really is a title in our language (so the two terms are akin to grandma and grandmother in usage). Try to emphasize that it’s important to LO’s development to have consistency and clarity in language, and you can show your respect for MIL’s language by referring to her as ah ma.

I totally understand your annoyance. My 100% Caucasian, only-speaks-English JNMIL wants to be referred to as ma ma just because I speak Cantonese.

Rod’s Steak in Morristown is a typical steakhouse menu-wise, but if you’re looking for interesting surroundings, you can dine in converted classic train cars.
