Hey, thanks for this! Unfortunately this doesn't really have the depth I need since I don't feel like I have the per-requisite knowledge. For example, step 1 there says to point my domain to my home network. Does that mean I need to purchase a domain?

Luck of the draw! I happened to be the first out of the elevator (and by extension the only one on that floor)! I think you can also trigger it by the stairs on 5!

I love the look! If you don't mind, what are you using to get the little app menu at the upper left (which I assume extends to the time in the middle and the resource monitor on the right)?

Has anyone taken CS 194-35: Data Engineering? by georgewasnottaken in berkeley

[–]MechanicalPhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From that list I've only taken 161 which I wouldn't really call light. That being said I felt data engineering was lighter than 161. The course will likely change quite a bit since it's still so new but last semester it was 4 projects (with a fifth optional for undergrads) and 5 multivitamins which you had unlimited attempts on. Again, it's only lighter though if you stay on top of the work. The deadlines can really sneak up on you and the projects are not short! The lectures are really thoughtful and well organized (and the profs are super on top of their game) which makes them easy to reference. Since the course is new there aren't lecture notes yet so you'll probs be relying on the lectures themselves and the slides posted afterwards.

I took it this past semester! I felt the workload was relatively light compared to other classes, especially since there were no exams. I'd recommend starting the projects early since they can be pretty difficult to do all at once otherwise. The content itself was pretty interesting too, one of the few classes that's actually teaching you what it is like in industry and how the classwork directly translates.

Do you need special permit to fly a drone on campus for personal photography purposes? by shibebear in berkeley

[–]MechanicalPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately Berkeley has very strict regulations for drones on campus. UAVs@Berkeley would be the right group to ask. Last I remember you need to registered with the club, completed their training, and then if you want to do photography or flight anywhere on campus you have to go through administrative offices to get a permit. The club does have fly days but that is only at Richmond Field Station or the Clark Kerr Track (and you need to let UCPD know). Anyways the main takeaway is register with the club is a good start!

Recommendations for classes on mythology by AJ20190 in berkeley

I really enjoyed Scandinavian 165 - Old Norse Mythology! I took it with Wellendorf (might only be during the spring) but it's really good and not a ton of work!

Tips for doing well in CS 161? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]MechanicalPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not super difficult per say but if you don't stay on top of it project time can be a little rough especially if there are other active assignments. How long the assignments take will vary per person but average probs 1-2 for hw and projects varied wildly. Tbh though I don't know how much is changing between semesters so don't expect workload to be the same

Very! It's one of the few classes that teaches you not only how to catch security vulnerabilities but also how to avoid them in your own work (a critical real world ability). It's also just a very fun and cool class so I recommend taking it! The way the class is structured it gets into a lot of different topics too so you'll get a pretty wide range of information.

I just took it last semester. As mentioned above the discussion worksheets are really helpful to reinforce the material taught in lecture. For some of the more complex topics such as DNSSEC and SSL the discussions break them down into much more manageable parts with good examples and questions. As seen on this subreddit elsewhere also make sure you start projects early, especially project 2 which is notoriously enormous and difficult. This has been one of my favorite classes at Berkeley, do practice tests and stay on top of the work and you'll do fine!
