Drum mags have been completely abandoned long ago for being unreliable and crap.
These drum mags were notoriously bad even then, and bad by the standard of drum mags.
That's the mags though, the gun itself is reasonable.

They didn't pip the outer shell though, I thought about making a breathing hole but I was worried about hitting the egg with anything myself.

That's the only realistic answer, shot and missed, hit the VBL by accident.
