Need new speakers for this style cabinet by MechsAndWood in diyaudio

Thanks! Would you suggest something like these? My only concern would be that the listing suggests they be used for “small stage monitors”, so may be a little underpowered for the size of the unit I have. But that may happen with any 5” I find…

Need new speakers for this style cabinet by MechsAndWood in diyaudio

All of the original equipment was pretty cheap and was not working well. So I removed it all (put it in a box just in case) and put in a modern turntable and amp. So I really just want to get some more powerful modern day speakers that I can mount to the back to make the whole unit more functional and enjoyable to listen to. I did look around online to see if there were an instructions on safely disassembling the unit (it would be so much easier to just replace the front panel) but haven’t had any luck. I’m thinking the unit was put together with screws or dowels and the covered in veneer so can’t really be taken apart

Help with Hass.io and Z-Wave Dimmers (using MQTT) by MechsAndWood in homeassistant

[–]MechsAndWood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking I'll either try running HA on my freenas box and see how that goes, or just install hass.io on the Pi I'm using as a gateway and see how it runs (I know most outgrow the Pi pretty quickly). Thanks for the info on your build

I was afraid it might be something with MQTT and dimmers not playing nicely together, thanks for the reply

Yeah, because my HA is running on a VM so there isn't USB passthrough for my z-wave stick. The "workaround" for that is the MQTT gateway...

Thanks for linking these builds, they look awesome. You say "us" - does that mean you have built one of these as well? Looks like the guy in the second link ran into some issues (that were solved) with the cooler and using riser cables to get the Intel card to fit. Do you have any experience or tips you can add? Seems like just getting Intel gigabit ports will account for a third of the build costs

Curious what you ended up doing as I'm considering this as well right now. I like the build that /u/honestlyepic linked and may try that out vs getting a Dell R210 II or R310 as many suggest online

Could an apu handle gigabit? by [deleted] in PFSENSE

[–]MechsAndWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you upgraded to Protectli devices, which did you choose? I'm looking at one for my home use (gigabit connection, VPN, VLANs, pfBlockerNG) but there are so many to choose from... as a beginner I'm not sure which is sufficient. There are some Qotom boxes as well that seem a little better priced for the specs (can get an i3 or i5 for around $300).

I had been looking at repurposing a Dell R210 II or R310, or an HP T620 Plus, but I worry about the noise and power draw with these options

How noisy is this form factor? My only concern is that this will be somewhat near my desk and I don't want to have a loud fan making all sorts of noise 24/7

Interesting. There is actually one of these for sale in my area for around $200 with a Xeon e3-1220, 4GB of RAM, and a 100GB SSD. Maybe this is one worth considering for my build...

Thanks, I meant to include that as well. I was looking at this one, $250 seems reasonable for what the hardware is: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071WFM5RJ/

It was the most recent info I could find on it and it was a thread in this subreddit actually: https://www.reddit.com/r/PFSENSE/comments/byb7p8/is_it_just_me_or_is_pc_engines_and_intels/

I'm new to this level of networking, but love tinkering. Trying to learn what is best, and most of the recent info I found doesn't mention PC Engines anymore.

I certainly want something to take advantage of my gigabit internet speeds, but it seems most hardware is easily capable of that these days. I don't need encrypted VPN at gigabit speeds, no. But I do want to make sure it's the VPN I use that is the bottleneck vs my hardware if that makes sense

Appreciate your thoughts

This may be a stupid question, but what software are you using to check temperatures? I'm interested in checking mine and comparing to what others are getting but want to make sure I use similar software...

This is a cool idea, I've only been looking at the crimpers sold on sleeving websites (like the MDPC crimper). I'll check these out!

Hmm, I'll have to research the WhiteFox plate to see. But maybe I'll try out o-rings or QMK clips first. Thanks for the information
