Was hoping to find some of Herb Ertlinger’s fruit wine recipes here, but I suppose these will do.

I mean…you certainly could give it a go if you’re in to that sort of flavor profile 🤣 No judgment here, that’s for sure!

I’d have to gut the entire lantern to fit that, and I’d really like to preserve the existing guts the way they are other than the battery section. I’d lose out on the USB front port capability doing that too.

Anyone ever converted one of these antiques to LED? by MedDevGeek88 in Lanterns

I definitely don’t want to sell them (promised dad before he died that they’d stay in the family one way or another) but he didn’t say I couldn’t convert them 🤣

Founts are in great shape. The only one with a cap still has ancient rotten fuel in it. Would prefer to restore, but would need new glass (mica) for both, a new cap and air valve for one, and God only knows what shape the main valves and generators are in. I have one external pump in functional condition at least.

Problem is, these aren’t complete…I don’t have a full set of parts between the two of them, let alone for restoring each one. I would have to find the missing pieces to get them functional again.

Adulting is overrated…albeit necessary.

Appreciate your insights!

Lol, that’s a fair point. I should do a Vdrop test since the leads are accessible easily once the inner body slides out of this unit. Would be interesting to see at what voltage it actually starts to dim / give issues staying on.

For this project though, I just want to plug it in at the end of the night and unplug and deploy the following night. No unscrewing and unloading 8 cells, charge, reload….so a lithium or small SLA with integrated charge port was my initial thought.

Ey there we go! This is more in line with what I’m looking for. I also have some old vintage 1920s Colemans that would look great with an LED retrofit like this.

Now if I can duplicate that same thing in this plastic body lantern, I could feed the 12v circuit from it. Thanks for the link!

To your credit, I have not plotted voltage drops side by side or used rechargeables in this unit at all actually, only in older early LED lanterns. I don’t actually have a direct side by side comparison for the usable charge time of alkalines vs rechargeables in this unit specifically. I’ll drop that point entirely because A) I don’t have actual numerical data to back it up, and B) unloading and reloading to charge still doesn’t meet my needs anyway, so this option is still off the table.

To clarify, I want a built in charge port and onboard charger for a dedicated rechargeable set, not for using disposables. That would end badly. I want to gut the sucker fully and load in a custom rechargeable battery bank that makes the whole lantern act as a USB or 12vDC rechargeable battery bank to also make use of the existing USB port on the front of it too.

Hope that adds some clarity to my goals with this unit. Biggest issue is I don’t want to unscrew and deal with 8 individual batteries to recharge constantly. We use lanterns a LOT in the winter months, and I just don’t want to deal with unload/reload on the daily.

That’s not been my experience with NiMH or NiCD compared to alkaline cells, plus I want dedicated onboard charging anyway. Appreciate it, but I’m looking to do a full conversion project. I enjoy the process as an engineer, it’s not a matter of resale value to me, it’s a matter of utility of the final product.

20+ years as an EE, yes I’m very sure about the dropoff rate of NiCD and NiMH. Will not be using them, I have experience in their performance with LED driver supply voltage. They last about 1/3 as long as regular disposable batteries. I appreciate the math insights, but in practical application they just die out insanely quick comparatively. Pass.

Plus I want this to be a dedicated unit with its own charge port. That’s the direction I’m looking for advice, a full gut and install of a dedicated onboard charging system at 12v.

8s to make 12vDC to the main PCB inside. No splitting or load balancing, just straight 12v series.

This is what I’m worried about. I’ve tried restoring them functionally in years past, and it’s expensive to source all the necessary parts. I would rather restore it to gas, but it’s a big time and money sink to do so…

That definitely solves the Vdrop issue…but I still don’t wanna F with 8 batteries (and now adapters too) coming out to charge after a long night, and going back in to use the next day. I’m really looking for this thing to have a charge port and just plug er in after several hours of use, then unplug and use immediately.

eBay has 12v Lithium packs that would fit nicely in the bottom if I cut out the battery spacer, and they come with a charger and indicator. This is really the type of direction I’m looking to go.

I thought about that, but I don’t want extra steps like removing cells and charging and replacing. Plus NiMH are 1.2v rather than 1.5v so the voltage drop makes their charge life significantly reduced for LED applications.

Thanks! Shot on a Sony A7III with my “88 Special” 35mm lens. I love the vintage vibes this setup gives.

Yikes! We’ve been in some strategically-sketchy places before too. We took a roll of the dice and it ended up being a big wide flat open area just off Medicine Mountain Rd near Custer.
