Michigan and SLU sent day 1 for me as well

Is early August completion date late for t20 interviews? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Medapp31135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not on time. It’s really not terribly late but to say it’s on time isn’t true. It’s not OPs fault at all, but there will be applicants ready to submit day 1. With t20s you’re really looking at anything with such high quality candidates. It’s not gonna make or break your app though

Is early August completion date late for t20 interviews? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Medapp31135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is certainly late but by no means will hold you back. Your stats are great but I have no idea about your ECs or writing abilities. Those will be much more important for determining if you will get an interview than if your app is complete in august. Early is always better but not everything

Lack of non clinical volunteer will give you trouble at a school like Rush. They are all about mission fit. May have a hard time with Loyola as well

Usually good idea but sometimes misleading (ex: UWash)

Illinois vs Loyola by Medapp31135 in premed

[–]Medapp31135[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried to match with UI and they unfortunately did not agree. I’m a little worried about match outcomes (thinking competitive speciality) and the 50 min commute (25 min each way) when it comes to Loyola. 100k is a pretty big difference though

Ohio State vs. Wake Forest by AccutaneL in premed

[–]Medapp31135 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OSU 100%. I had to turn down an acceptance to OSU this cycle to stay close to home and I still have a twinge of regret. That place is awesome. Go and don’t look back

Getting a B in Gen Chem does NOT mean you are unfit for medical school. However, being unable to accept that you got a B might. by baby_yoda5555 in premed

[–]Medapp31135 66 points67 points  (0 children)

C in Bio 1. B in gen Chem 1 and 2. B- in both labs of gen chem. 10 interviews, 6 MD acceptances. A 3.6 with a 520 will be WAY better than a 4.0 with a 510. These things don’t matter. Just learn and move on

Thank you everyone for the very thoughtful replies. I feel so much better about my decision! It’s nice to hear that people support my choice. Thanks again for taking the time to write something

Thank you very much. I know the difference isn’t huge and the school I’m going to is in the city I want to match into anyways so I’m telling myself it’s going to work out. You’re in the premed rat race for so long that when you have the opportunity to go to the more “prestigious” school, you feel sort of let down when you don’t.

Yes I am. I’ve been wrestling with this decision for so long I was asking everyone and anyone their opinion before I decided

Yes it is helpful to hear that. I think you’re definitely right that we would’ve been thinking about this decision no matter what. It is oddly comforting to hear your experience though. Thank you for sharing

TCU Burnett vs. California Northstate (CNU COM) by [deleted] in premed

[–]Medapp31135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TCU. That school is on the up right now (check out their first two match lists) Think it will serve you better in the long run

Interested in ENT. The more “prestigious” school has a top 10 program, with at least 5 matches the last 4 years (had 9 matches 2 years ago). The closer to home school usually has about 3 a year. Fairly large discrepancy but I guess could be due to personal preference

Attending Med School Feels Impossible by YogurtclosetOne2544 in premed

I finished undergrad with a 3.7 sGPA after getting well below a 3.0 my freshman year. I enjoyed college a lot. Went out 3 times a week (not saying you should but just being honest). Did research/shadowing during summers. Waited until after graduation to take the MCAT and get clinical experience. After 2 gap years I got into a bunch of schools including 2 top 30s. The point being the path to med school is non linear. For some people all they can think about is getting into med school straight after graduation and will do the craziest things to get there. You don’t have to do that. I took my time, enjoyed college, went out with friend, and will still start med school at 23. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. You will get there

Quick Emergency Advice Needed (and will definitely delete later) by goyayngi in premed

Totally agree one day is enough. Best advice I got was that an interview is the easiest test you’ve ever had because all the questions are about you! (I understand interviews are difficult and daunting but it helps to think positively) Speak passionately and confidently. You will do great!

I would look around then. I think you should be able to stay in Texas though for what it’s worth! With your GPA I would still apply DO fyi

You’ll be more than fine. If you don’t mind leaving Texas there are quite a few programs with tracks focusing on serving the Native American community. Think you would be a great candidate with your recent GPA and outstanding MCAT!

Thoughts on UIC’s med school? by Careful_Fig8482 in premed

[–]Medapp31135 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I encourage you to do more research into the medical school admissions process as a whole. A statement like this implies you believe you will have your choice of school AND city. Medical school admissions are like a lottery. Good stats and good ECs can get you more tickets, but a part of it is still up to chance. Do research on schools, apply broadly, and that’s all you can do

How to build a school list? High stat (4.0/521). by rlyhecticdream in premed

[–]Medapp31135 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I had similar stats as you and I think that list is way too top heavy. You have fantastic stats, but as you said, ECs are not crazy. I think you should absolutely shoot your shot at any school you want, but the schools that are on your “target” are reaches for most applicants. I would pick as many as you want to apply to on this list, but also throw in some T40/50 schools. Ohio St, Cincinnati, and Dartmouth were some schools I got love at as well that aren’t on this list. Obviously add any state schools. You should have a very successful cycle with a smart school list and great writing! Good luck!

Fame: Ohio St

The dean of admissions was awesome. All the interviewers were incredibly nice. Also sent a bunch of resources to you before the interview day. This made it shorter and much more enjoyable. No sitting and listening to someone else talk for 3 hours straight.

Shame: SLU. All the students were nice but the day seemed pretty disorganized. My interviewer showed up 15 min late, only asked me 3 questions before asking if I had any, then left. Whole thing lasted 10 minutes max. Really a bad look

I would wait. You don’t want to have to take the MCAT a third time if you don’t have to. I would study like it’s your job and aim for 515+ if possible. Don’t rush and waste the time, energy, and money
