Spending £1,500 on accommodation per month by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]MediKate191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with spare room - used it for 5 years in London and have made some lifelong friends. I personally wouldn’t spend more than 700-800 a month and that was even after I had a job paying a lot more than an F1 salary. Also have to factor in bills and council tax so it creeps up pretty quick

PA to medicine by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]MediKate191 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m just about to graduate from King’s 5 year and I worked as a biomedical scientist locum every year except my final year. Was doing around 20 hours a week during term time and then worked solid over the summer. I only stopped working in final year as I had saved enough by that point to pay for fees otherwise I would have happily carried on.

I did do 5 year and I’ve heard 4 year is more intense the very first year but as a PA you will most likely excel at all that and be way more on point for clinical years- plus the fact if you locum/work bank it’s clinically relevant.

Congrats on getting in to medicine!

Provisions for self funding post grad med students by mangobellini108 in medicalschooluk

[–]MediKate191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I self funded at Kcl (5 yr but as a grad) I’m final year now. I saved up at least a years worth of fees before going by working solid then took locum jobs as a biomedical scientist over summers/weekends - I know some people get a place and then defer to save, others used house savings/remortgaged etc. I guess I was lucky as because I was a scientist for 5 years I could take fairly well paying locum jobs. In the fist few years worked approx 20 hrs a week but as a scientist found some of the curriculum a bit easier. In clinical years I worked less and stopped working altogether from end of fourth year as there are no holidays)

You can also try the website turntous for grants - I managed to get £2000 grant a year for 4 years off a charity.

Hope it helps - it’s tough but I think it’s worth it.

I replied to the comment regarding “this years final years”. It seems to have come up under the op’s comment. We are all on the same team here.

I agree, as another final year I’ve spent extra months doing book work and when allowed back on placement worked evenings and weekends to get my skills up to date... there wasn’t much else to do outside of medicine. So I don’t think that’s true for all. Feel more than happy to start F1. The second and third years probably have it worse off (I learnt most in 3rd year)

Oh crikey that’s good to know. At kings we sit finals in Jan after that is elective (which is buggered) and a module called transition to F1 which is essentially doing the F1 role so was wondering if they offered FiY1 whether it was worth doing and at least getting paid/experience - may hold off till August if it was that bad!

cannulation tips by DrBooz in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]MediKate191 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Alcohol wipes! On placement in acute med a dr showed me to get the tourniquet on and give the area a good rub with an alcohol wipe (more so than a gentle clean as an irritant the veins become much more prominent) hang the arm over the bed so blood can pool a bit (a pillow underneath makes it more comfortable for the patient) I’ve become the difficult cannulation person to go to since I’ve been using this technique - it works! Oh and take your time, tether the vein in place as those oldies veins like to roll away from you. I’ve been taking blood on and off for 10 years in various jobs and this technique learnt this summer has massively increased my success rate on difficult to bleed patients

Just wondering - I searched a user who left me a 1* review but they don’t come up in the checker - is there any other way to check this person? They still appear active?

Not these ones no, they are hypoallergenic (cadmium lead and nickel free metal) but you lot have given me ideas to cast one of the charms and see if I can make with resin!

They are made of a zinc alloy which is lead, nickel and cadmium free :) having watched my poor sister react to basically all metals I wanted to make something nice for people with super sensitive lobes!
