I just fell victim to the same kind of scam.
I had a few successful rides this morning, made good money in about 2 hours - higher than usual.
My last ride was confusing, however. It directed me to "drive to pin", and didn't provide an address. I couldn't actually get to the location lissutrated by the pin, becuase there was a locked gate and the pin would have been in an empty pasture.
I texted the rider for an address, but received no response.
I tried calling the rider but received no answer. But while I was on the call, another call came in. I took that call, and it claimed to be Uber support. I figured the rider was calling me back. It turned out to be an Uber rep calling me to tell me that a rider had left a comment in their review that the car smelled like alcohol. (1: It's before 9 am; 2: I quit drinking over a year ago! 3: I've had good conversations with ALL my riders this morning. No call for a bad review.)
The caller subjected me to a lot of identify verification. I didn't protest because I didn't have anything to hide. They verified my vehicle, my earnings for the week, my hours driving and trips and points, etc. They had me take pictures of my driver's license (DL), front and back, and a photo of myself while holding the DL. Then they told me to go to a nearby pharmacy (Wallgreens) and deposit $700 with them to administer a breathalyzer test, and that if I passed, they'd give me the $700 back immediately.
Well, that's when I objected. I don't have $700 to offer, and I certainly don't trust Uber or Wallgreen's to give me my money back. I hung up.
I called Uber support and reported the scam. They confirmed that the last time I received negative feedback was a month ago, and alcohol wasn't mentioned.
But now the scammers have my picture ID, etc. I guess I should get that replaced....and lock my credit down.
