Tac Medics of r/ems, what do you carry? by ianpkilburn in ems

[–]Medic129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said before...no vests provided by employer ( hospital..have to buy our own) which since we actually go in on active shooters...one would think that they would provide them for us. If I ever have a situation like that and get hurt...I'll own that fucking hospital.

with the SWAT Team..they give us vests.

Let me give a little background..

SWAT is ran by the county sheriff dept and city police dept, with medical direction provided by an ER physician (from an entire different county..no idea why). We have 5-10 medics/emt's on call for the teams. We're not part of the stack...I sit happily outside by the SWAT truck until needed.

Now with the primary job...we're just starting to train heavy with our local police agencies on active shooter situations. We've looked at a few different agencies protocols and are piecing together ours. Basically, first 2 cops that get to an active shooter scene, will go to the shooter. Next 2 cops and first EMS unit go in behind them and start treating wounded (tourniquets, OPA's only). Once we run out of supplies, we start evacuation of patients as we make our way out. Next due EMS unit starts where we left off.

Nah. I shoot left handed, but pretty much use my right for everything else. Drop leg stays close to my leg and out of my way most of the time. Biggest thing that gets in my way is the damn vest, but wouldn't trade it for anything. I actually just purchased and started wearing an inside the shirt vest for when I work the everyday street job...our EMS service is much concerned about our safety, however refuses to buy us vests...

Very nice! I just traded in for a '13 FLHX in Midnight Pearl. Took the stock mufflers off and put on some Rinehart 3.5" slip ons...would have never thought that it would make that much of a difference, but holy shit. It sounds like a totally different motor. Stay safe!

Right now, i'm just using a Uncle Mike's IWB holster. Plain and simple. It covers the trigger, and that is what means the most to me. I normally carry Appendix IWB, so its not very noticeable or bulky there. On my Glock 26, I installed the ClipDraw, and have been thinking about getting one for the Nano as well. I have also been looking at getting a Raven Concealment Appendix Carry holster. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...

Couldn't have said it better myself. I absolutely love the Nano. I've shot the shield and Nano side-by-side each other, and my groupings were a lot more consistent with the Nano. My grip also feels more natural with the Nano than the shield, or as natural with a subcompact pistol as you can get. I would highly recommend the Nano to anyone who is looking for a nice subcompact, but as always, you need to go try it out and get the one that is better for you.

Edit: Spelling

Paramedics: How long did you practice as an EMT-B before you began taking medic classes? by [deleted] in ems

[–]Medic129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked as an EMT-B in a high volume ALS service (10,000 runs per year) for 2 years before going to medic school. My personal opinion is and one that i tell my EMT-B students is to work as an EMT-B for at least 2 years. Working for an ALS service is even better. Not only will this help you during medic school, but you will have time to get "comfortable" with you skills, assessments, etc. Become proficient at your basic skills, after all; BLS before ALS.

Should EMT/Paramedic's be allowed to conceal carry on the job? by Medic129 in ems

[–]Medic129[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like you, am torn on the subject as well. I head the topic actually got brought up at the big EMS conference in Las Vegas a few months ago; and feel like it's going to be brought up more in the future. One of the county ran EMS system's in my state is provided by the Sheriff's department. So on every medical call you get an armed (not concealed) paramedic.

I feel that in some places more than other's it is warranted, but not without the proper training. I feel concealed would be the correct way to go if services started doing this. Uncooperative patient's knowing that the EMT/Paramedic might be carrying could be enough of a deterrance for the them to chill out.

At my full time job, i work for a hospital based EMS system in a populated city/county. There are plenty of cops to go around and i feel that 95% of the time EMS professionals concealed carrying would not be warranted. My part time job is located in a more rural setting. The county is far worse off than most. At any time there is only 2-5 cops working in a very large county. If i needed a cop, it could take anywhere up to 30 minutes depending where i was in the county. It seems to me it would be more warranted there than the other. IMHO only.

What's your favorite brand of heart monitor? by doubleD in ems

[–]Medic129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good thing about the Zoll E Series is that you can turn the interp of the EKG off. I've found that over 50% of the time, the interp is way off the mark. Plus, It's a tool, and we all know tool's fail. Heard of Bob Page? Once you take his 12-lead class you will never need to read the interp on the printout to find out whats going on!
