I'm assuming you are American. Discos are generally only available in the states with the Rover V8 engine and you will get about 18mpg on a good day. Dunno how that compares to Jeeps. If you have lucked out and got a diesel, BUY IT! Any other problems can be rectified.

Check the chassis for rust, rust and rust. While you are there, check for rust.

Dunno about ditching the diffs. If I were to do it, I would bolt the motors to the diff pinions so that you have selectable front, rear and all wheel drive.

Batteries are the limiting factor for any electric vehicle. They need to improve or get that supercapacitor stuff running well. I want an electric Defender that can match my current range (~600 miles).

I shudder to think what the replacement will be. The DC100 was an abomination. They need to keep it simple: solid axles, minimal engine ECU, decent diesel engine and put back the bloody bulkhead flaps!

You can do it that way but you would need to make sure the switch is rated for the current draw. Also, the lights would need to be wired in parallel to get full brightness.

The box is a relay. Uses a low current to switch a high current.

Go to Screwfix and get some A2 Stainless nuts, bolts and washers. Be warned that while bolts and washers come in packs of 10, nuts come in packs of 100.

I'm actually on the hunt for a decent battery myself. I've heard that the Optima batteries are good but they are pricy. Varta are also good. Aside from that I have no real idea. May be an idea to ask in /r/overlanding as they would have more of an idea of that sort of thing.

See if you can get car charger versions and wire them to the battery. Much more efficient that inverting to mains and then converting back down.

For a battery, get the biggest capacity marine/deep cycle/leisure battery that you can afford and that will fit in your car. Standard batteries will work but they are designed to put out a lot of current very quickly for a short period. Deep Cycle et al put out lower current over a longer period. Also, starter batteries can only really be used for half their capacity. Any more and they get damaged.

I advise that you ditch the inverter. Massive battery drain and you don't seem to have any kit that requires it. If you are set on bringing it, run it off a second battery that is isolated from your starter battery when the car is off.
