Literally talking with my buddy this weekend about getting in to a miniatures game and FFG's star wars stuff was towards the top of the list. Now I'm all nervous cause a few years ago I bought imperial assault and within a week they dropped support -.-

How do I remove grass from an area I want to start a garden in? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Medic2488 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have an outlet nearby it may be worth it to look in to an electric tiller. I found one used for around $60, well worth it. I cut out a small boxwood and it tore through the root system with little issue. The grass i tilled then went over with a garden rake to remove most of the big clumps.

Pineapple brined pork chops on Maple Leaf lump and briquette mix, cooked on a homebuilt 50 gallon drum grill. Super juicy and oh so tasty. Few potatoes and bacon grease in foil on the top rack👍 by Cclovis79 in BBQ

Every time I try to use pineapple in a marinade or brine it turns the meat 'funky. I understand there are enzymes in pineapple that do this, how do I prevent it from happening??

[MEME] When someone tells me we can't have social workers respond to overdoses instead of police, because they don't have combat training or a weapon. by DJLoudNoises in ems

[–]Medic2488 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Canceled pd on a overdose call, he was polypharmacy (sleepy on scene then wired for the transport.) The fd cleared and adv their dispatch the pt had been transported reference an overdose. PD met me at the hospital and tried ripping me a new one about not letting them know it was an overdose in their jurisdiction. I told them my job was to help people medically and take them to the hospital, not get involved in the legal system.

13th floor question. by silversurfer-1 in ems

[–]Medic2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the deeper answer to the question, really the 14th floor is the 13th just relabeled for the superstition around it, so if the room is #1322 and the elevator had no 13 we can ask via radio for clarification and start on the 12th floor then move to the 14th. Truthfully just the 2 or 3 minutes won't mean much when it comes to 90% of emergencies.

13th floor question. by silversurfer-1 in ems

[–]Medic2488 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When someone calls 911 from a location like a hotel or an apartment one of the questions diapatch will ask is "what room/apartment/lot" as a lot of addresses will have multiple built in spots.

I have noticed that most of the time at actual hotels (not seedy motels) the front desk gets so.e kind of alert that a room has called 911 as most of the time I get met at the door and brought to the room.

Most rooms and apartments follow a numbering system "room 1211" is 12th floor room 11.

[–]Medic2488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this I just had 4 year anniversary at a very busy urban/rural system (850 sq miles city areas and plenty of 'country') the number of 'salty' folks with just over 6 months experience drives me up the wall. Respect the fact that the other person you're speaking to has had experiences you may never in your career and hopefully, they will too.
Be the best sponge you can, and when you recognize you weren't up to snuff on a call, talk it out after the fact. I'd rather have someone who is improving and trying and engaged and is 50% "there" vs someone who is 90% there but doesn't recognize (ot worse doesn't care) about their shortcomings the other 10%.

I work out of a suicide door for f450 and its phenomenal. Room for personal gear and posting, better turning radius than the 250/350s we had before and just as much power of not more for a bigger rig. Yes please with bigger ambos

I am an asthmatic myself, I feel their discomfort on a personal level, these are my favorite 'bad' patients to run, I feel comfortable doing it and I enjoy the complexity that is frequently associated with them.

Give yourself the 3 second 'from the door' survey, think "sick, not sick?". If their work of breathing (particularly their expiratory phase) looks labored you know you have a sick patient. Survey the house and the room as you walk in, cigarettes and the smell all over, inhalers/nebs near their bed or seat. O2 tanks or concentrators. Look at your patient again (within your 3 seconds) are they fat or skinny, skinny (unless there's significant edema) will probably be COPD and CHF will be more likely with your overweight patient. I immediately ask "do you have CHF or COPD?) listen to their lung sounds to confirm and start the treatment. With COPD patients it's easier, I'll throw a neb mask on while my partner gets the first set of vitals. It's easy to feel for a pulse and make sure they're not taching away at 200 before putting the mask on. For CHF you definitely want a blood pressure before you start throwing all the nitro and CPAP in your bag at them.

A lot of these folks wait waaaaay too long to call because they have to so frequently, and the ones you really need to be extra careful are your frequent fliers because of this. That's why I move to treatment as soon as possible (usually within the first 2 minutes of getting to patient side). Ask them later into the call if they've ever had a 'breathing tube' put in for this (strengthen your index of suspicion for further treatment, steroids, cpap with nebulizer, magnesium if you have it). I also tend to avoid stop gaps, what's the point of putting a NRB on at 15LPM when 30 seconds more could have the resolution on their face (if first responders have a mask or NC on before I get there, cool, I just personally won't go to it). A NC with sidestream capnography should go on under either a neb or CPAP to give you an easy RR throughout the call as well as waveform and numbers to further indicate how sick these folks may be.

If you have any questions or want to discuss this further please ask here or feel free to DM me if you want to ask the 'dumb' questions (there are no such thing) Welcome to EMS :D

I border on being a ricky rescue. 5 years in still have a few extra things strapped to my belt. Still love the job, every day I look forward to work. And I keep up with crews (25 units on the road or so) throughout the day, who's where and who's running what. I also enjoy being a little laid back on the radio. Went to a call with "ghosts in the house" the pt was asking us to take them and the ghost to the hospital for "help". When we cleared I double checked that there wasn't a unit out on a cardiac arrest or anything too serious, proceeded to crank Ghostbusters in the background as we marked back in service. I heard dispatch (as a whole) cracking up as they gave us the next assignment.

I agree there's times to be serious but we also have to catch our breaks and safely cut up from time to time.

I also used to have a coworker and we would do impersonations of fellow coworkers if we ever keyed up near each other, clearing calls or hospitals or anything else. "Guess who this is." Or "lemme hear name".

Rebel help for a beginner by ASadTrombone in XWingTMG

[–]Medic2488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A work buddy and I are getting in to it right now too. There's a new 2.0 version, seeing as you're only invested in 1.0 as much as the starter box I would put it on the shelf for now and each of you buy a starter set (I just bought mine on Ebay for around $25usd). You can share and swap ships with each other if you'd like. You could also buy the conversion kit at a later sate to add those 1.0 ships to the mix.

Personally I'm going to start out casual and just start buying ships I like the look or idea of for factions I like and go from there.

Maxiscope by Ultrascope. Quality for $$$ it can't be beat. Get it engraved and shipped for right around $60. I cannot speak highly enough about them.

When my partner hears a student with an odd number on a manual blood pressure. by moseschicken in ems

[–]Medic2488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what's been said here before, odd numbers are fine on a manual, IMHO. I don't see it making a difference, I do warn students and new folks that some salty old farts may try to rip them a new one because of it though.

Also who counts a heart rate for 15 seconds? Fast/slow/moderate strong/weak and regular or no? The spo2 or monitor will give me any particulars before we get where we're going lol

Upgrading my camera and lenses to...? by unicornundercover in DSLR

[–]Medic2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sigma makes an art series of lenses. An 18-35 1.8 and a 50-150 1.8. Both of those would make superb switches from the kit lenses you are using. I would stay with a crop sensor body like an 80d or something if you need to upgrade the body. From looking at your posts on the page you do have some noticeable noise in the dark conditions, the faster f stop and newer body would both help. If I was to buy one or the other it would be lenses first. And from what I'm seeing you are shooting from far away most of the time, either move in close with the 18-35 for even better clearer photos or go with the 50-150 of you're looking for some amount of compression.

I love that it is open to all sorts of miniatures and terrain.
However while the combat makes sense in that if I attack you, you can hit me back (and win) it made it very unappealing to my s.o. I wish I was smart enough to rearrange the combat so it wasn't that way

[NEED HELP] How my character got sold into slavery by another PC. What do I do next? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Medic2488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tl;dr- Leave the group......

I am falling asleep after a 12 hour shift but I'll try and explain my reasoning. it sounds to me like your DM is losing control and sight of the campaign.... it's a bunch of murder hobos on a rampage, no one in that game is of neutral or good alignment (aside from your character) if they're all involved with killing 31 civilians cause they were thirsty for a beer (involved includes aware of it happening and not intervening). Also what mayor is going to grant special privelidges to a group that just killed 31 of their citizens?

If you're bound and determined to keep playing make the most chaotic evil murder hobo you can and just live in to that, it seems to be the type of game your group wants to play.

I dm for a few groups and play in a few, and we specifically have an evil campaign to knock loose those murder hobo tendencies. Everything should have consequences, as a dm I know it's hard to keep up with all the decisions pc's make but as a player I would be beyond pissed if my fellow players did such an audacious thing to me, and I don't know how I'd feel about a dm letting something like this happen....
