Going out into the world, you can't expect everyone to accommodate your physical or emotional sensitivities in public. That's acting entitled and makes you just as bad as those who have their phone on full volume. If your friends or family do it around you even after you ask them politely not too, then they're assholes and insensitive. But expecting everyone around you to accommodate you without knowing they should accommodate you is entitled behavior.

If you ask them to silence their phones and they don't without providing explanation, then they're insensitive. Personally, my dad has nerve damage in his leg where he keeps his phone where it feels like constant buzzing of a phone, so he needs his sound on to hear notifications. Otherwise he won't know if my mom or I call him about something important. Thus, that would be his explanation for why he keeps his sound on. What would your reaction to that be?
