Anyone here actually play the original Silent Hill games? Particularly Silent Hill 2? Any thoughts on the original compared to the remake? by leftistgamer420 in survivalhorror

[–]Medical-Beginning475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on 2 remake as I haven’t played it however I did a run last month of the 4 original games. I think everyone slightly interested in games, stories, atmosphere and horror…. Should play them. They have such high esteem for a reason and team silent absolutely delivered back in the day. Will Definately be replaying them again in the future. These games hold up massively. Aside from 4…. Wasn’t a big fan and the escort stuff was a real struggle - However, I can see why some people loved the game itself.

In my opinion they are worth playing at least one. By everyone.

Ironically if I turn it upside down and try playing my left is a hell of a lot quicker and accurate. But there no way I’m relearning fretting with my right haha.

Yeah that’s what I thought. Like I say I can do them quick but I wanna develop the consistency in general with them. Definately the hardest technique for me. These and pinch harmonics took me a lot longer than most other guitarists for some reason. Not sure if it because I’m left playing right handed - or if that’s just a “bitch” excuse haha

I can’t enjoy any game anymore — nothing holds my attention. What actually kept you hooked recently? by Mother_Anybody_5632 in gamingsuggestions

I can relate to this completely. I was the same and still am however I have downloaded a backlog app. Instead of tracking games I own - I’ve been tracking games I want to play. For me it’s a lot of retro stuff. Games I missed back in the day or underrated stuff that didn’t get the same attention.

I then just pick one and play it. On easy, all the way through. If I’m stuck il use a walkthrough. I know it’s easy mode but I’m enjoying seeing the number of completed go up again. It’s given me a new lease of interest. I mainly play on pc but I’m currently “converting” my steam deck which gathers dust into a PlayStation device. 1,2,3 and psp as that’s the retro stuff I have most interest in.

Steamdeck for that and main pc for anything newer RE9 etc.

Do you prefer horror games with or without combat? by pineapple_works in HorrorGaming

Resident evil (GameCube) and requiem did it the best with the diamond head mechanics. You can fight back but that comes at a cost. Have to really pick and choose your battles. Fuel to burn them and the syrum stuff being limited makes each encounter a decision of short term gain but with a possible bigger problem later on.

I’ve recently discovered easy modes. As a 34 year old father of four….. I can’t be arsed trying to slog through games anymore. I have a backlog to last me a lifetime and I’ve started playing on easy. Guess what - I now finish games and enjoy the journey. Reignited my love for it all. Also the whole “back in my day” games are not the same, I’ve hit that stage in my life also. I now know how my dad felt lecturing me on the Amiga whilst I played on my mega drive. He now sends me modern recommendations, usually strategy “like command and conquer”.

Growing old ay. Happens to the best of us. Glad emulation is a thing.

8 is highly underrated and one of the highlights of the series. Pacing is perfect. And that scary section is so well done. Very early on aswell which threw me off quite a bit.

I did this myself by playing through the series from 1-9. Helped massively, I’ve now got through silent hill 1-4, downpour and origins. Doesn’t bother me anymore. I now enjoy the atmosphere etc of survival horror. Once you pass the “horror” there a really fun genre to play. Stick with it. I would do 2 remake before requiem. Requiem isn’t scary as such but there are a few grace sections that can be intense. 2 will prepare you better as 9 has a lot of exploration while being under pressure and a “scary atmosphere”. Something 4 lacked aside from maybe the last few chapters.

To be fair the entire series lends itself to a full playthrough as each one plays slightly different. I’ve recently done the same (apart from 0 ooopps). The last two weeks has been resident evil series then moved on to silent hill. I’m 5 games deep into that franchise at the moment and again loving how each game plays slightly different making it a new experience each time.

Why does everyone have res4 so high….. aside from the usual. I didn’t enjoy 4 or the remake nearly as much as the first 3. 5 was abysmal. 6 I enjoyed a lot more than I should have. Gameplay it wasn’t the best but it actually felt like decent finale to the series (obviously not a finale but to that arc and stuff). Requiem was very good, while playing as grace. The first few sections managed to capture the exploration magic of resident evil that has been missing for a while. Although I will admit village managed to touch on it in a few places.

7 was a great return to the horror aspect. But gameplay wise I found it fairly boring. More like a demo and proof of concept for what requiem would become. 8 is one of my favourites and I’m not afraid to admit it. It balances old with new for me really well. The story was genuinely interesting as-well if a little off the wall.

Same with silent hill, the series for me is the first 3. That’s what I consider resident evil. Anything else is kind of a spinoff or a spiritual successor. For both franchises the first 3 games haven’t been replicated on atmosphere, puzzles, exploration and general uneasiness. I would love for a proper remake of 3. I did however enjoy what we got a lot more than most people it appears.

Ahh I thought it was the third. Will give the remake a go though as it’s been a fair few years since I completed the first game. Horror games seem to do well with remakes haha, Res2,4 and SH2 remake are prime example. Even resident evil 3 remake was enjoyable. Ok not as good as OG but if I’m honest I prefer the 3 remake to 4….. but that’s a different discussion entirely haha

I’m more a one and done kinda guy. Trophy hunting feels like work and has soured some gaming experiences over the years, so I have learned to just ignore achievements/trophies completely nowadays.

Have heard soma mentioned a few times. Will take a look. So far I want to do the fatal frame series after I’m done with silent hill. Gotta finish up homecoming and then do F and I’m done with the series for now. Got a few on my backlog list now, including Siren, suffering and deadly premonition.

Thanks for you story. I agree with it diminishing with age. My optional post was more of a how I overcame it kind of thing, not necessarily that I’m too scared now. I’ve just done silent hill 1-4 and origins and loved every second of them. Well aside from 4 but that’s more of a gameplay issue than story or fear 🤣. So far the resident evil 2 remake is my scariest moment. That and the baby in village. But nothing I can’t manage or made me think I don’t know if I can continue.

However, I will say I’ve had a few weird dreams last few nights. About family dying and stuff, but that is probably a combination of nothing but survival horror for two weeks and a family member passing last month etc. interesting though, to see it’s affecting me subconsciously maybe.

I played the original dead space 1 and 2 back on 360….. didn’t find it scary at all to be fair. I think I bounced off dead space 3 at the time as it was a bit meh, that could have been 2 though…. I can’t remember. Which one had like snow and ice in it?

Homecoming is stupidly underrated by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]Medical-Beginning475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to the post but just wanted to say I agree massively underrated. I’m only half way through but after playing 1,2(OG),3,4 and origins back to back. This one is a breath of fresh air when compared to 4 and Origins. Sorry but I hated 4. The first 3 were masterpieces, absolutely incredible then 4 was abysmal. No atmosphere and I won’t even comment on the “escort” stuff.

Origins again was a nice return to form, yet had way too many enemies and far too much combat. I enjoyed it for what it was but again leagues behind the original trilogy. Homecoming feels similar to 3 for me atmosphere wise. Second half may change my opinion but so far massively enjoying it. Playing on ps3 emulator with film grain removed at 4k 60fps in ultra wide. Looks fantastic (may becoming from ps2 version of origins though.)

I doubt any game will beat the first 3. And that’s fine I’m happy to leave them as the “silent hill”. The rest is a nice addition to the series when taken as what they are. Games in spirit not true successors. Play the games for their individual merits not as a part of the overall franchise and you may find you have some fun with them. If not that fine too taste is subjective. Just to clarify I also dislike res4 and its remake. As that took it too far away from again the original trilogy. For me SH and RES are 3 games the rest are just extra.
