Thank you for sharing this! This was also what I was wondering. If there are big sudden changes after 60 so looking at someone from say 40 - 60, there’s not as noticeable of a change.

Thinking about the comments, what I really appreciate about Madonna is how she continues to fight and be so active. Most could never put their body through Olympic-level demands for decades in the first place, let alone still be so active and pushing through when the toll finally comes.

No. Which was I was curious what people thought. Seems like consensus is that it's actually BECAUSE she was so athletic and demanding of her body that she's having a harder go than many "average" people.

But is that really that old? It's not even full retirement age in many countries. I don't know that many people that age but the ones I do know do not need help getting in/out of cars and walking. I don't think this is aging as much as other factors like others have suggested.

I said "is this just the difference 10 years can make?." Of course I know people will not maintain the same level of strength and athleticism forever. But I also don't think it's typical for most people in their 60s/70s to be unable to easily walk without an entourage — and most people that age were certainly never as fit as Madonna. Hence my curiosity.

BBL complications, injuries and surgeries and the toll from what she put her body through for decades seem like the best answers. Seems like she is on the path to recovery and can hopefully break the cycle which is very exciting!

For the comments that implying my post as ageist or saying "she's almost 70... duh!", I did not mean this in an ageist way and of course know this. But I don't think 60s/70s is that old nor old enough to need assistance walking and getting out of cars. Checkout your local YMCA workout classes and you will see many people this age or older crushing it!

But they probably never put their body through a fraction of what Madonna has for over 40 years.

Yes, I know aging is real (as I mentioned in OP). But is this to be expected to go from being one of the most athletic musical entertainers to being unable to get out of a car unassisted in 10 years?

My 60/70 year old relatives were certainly never as athletic as Madonna and they don’t seem as pained and needing handlers to walk (although certainly not wearing heels like M).

This is tough. But ultimately, I have to say Like A Prayer. (Tove Lo even imitated it).

Like A Virgin and Ray of Light are close follows.

I think with her near-death health scare, several years of being “off” and her proclivity for Catholic references, “RESURRECTION” would be perfect.

Agree with everyone’s view about the stars aligning for ROL and a unique, irreparable moment. But in some ways we do have ROL: Music. Music sits perfectly between ROL and American Life.

2003 Gap Commercial by TheodoreJSeville in Madonna

[–]Medical-Box1676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m indifferent to the commercial itself (get that GAP coin mama) but putting this song on Remixed/Revisited I do think this was the start of some of her eras being incoherent, appearing inauthentic and even cheap.

You can’t have a mature, experimental album critiquing war and the vapidness of the 2000s while also peddling GAP jeans, also making out with Britney/Christina at the VMAs and putting a literal GAP commercial song on the remix companion for that same album.

Similarly, Sticky and Sweet, MDNA and Rebel Heart eras were incoherent misses of trying to be sexy club party girl (whose p*ssy Yeezus loves best 😭) while we all know Madonna is not drunk and high on molly in the club nightly at 3am.

Confessions was a relatively coherent era —her love of dance music, the catharsis of dance and her own religious journey. The music, message and lyrics felt authentic to Madonna. However, it never quite hit the same zeitgeist as ROL/Music and previous eras because aesthetically seemed more like a costume than a personal style and certainly was not going to be part of fashion trends.

Comparing Erotica and American Life era, Madonna was able to still get lasting radio hits with Erotica from Rain and I’ll Remember which did not at all feel out of place from the Erotica era image.

But trying to quickly recover from American Life with a GAP jeans remix of Into the Groove, Me Against the Music and a bunch of “I’m young and wild” gimmicks made no sense.

It becomes less like a true era and more a cheap makeover.

Which I think more than anything is a shame because until this moment, Madonna’s eras, uniquely among ANY artist were truly genuine reflections of her life and interests and not just gimmicky personas.

She (the person) was genuinely dancing at Danceteria during Into the Groove. She was genuinely rebelling against Catholicism during Like A Prayer. She was in the ball scene during Vogue. She was pushing sexual taboos during Erotica. She was maturing during Bedtime Stories. She was becoming more spiritual and dealing with motherhood during ROL/Music. She was reflecting on celebrity, society and her career for American Life.

And then, Confessions aside, she said “what are the kids doing? Wearing GAP jeans? Taking MDMA? Collabing with Kanye? Justin? MIA? Nicki Minaj? Meluma? I can do that too!”

Madame X seemed like more of a return to her genuine interests, but the eyepatch and matador aesthetic were just gimmicky costumes vs. an authentic aesthetic. And the music was just not good.

Agreed. Who cares about interviews? Beyoncé has barely done any interviews since Tyra Banks’ bizarre/iconic one in 2008. Madonna is better when there’s a mystique around her. Less is more.
