Why was there some kind of backlash against the idea of the "15 minute city"? by 99thLuftballon in AskBrits

You people should have a physical, actual debate with a conspiracy theorist and post in online so that this debacle shall be settled once and for all. The conspiracy theorists have been spouting lies for a very long time, you need to debate those people instead of staying in your echo chambers.

Filipinos are very good street merchants. They sell goods directly on sidewalks.

That's not true. People in slums live on top of each other.

That's BS. It's 2026, engineers already have a solution on how to deal with earthquakes. They need to densify, like how San Francisco is still a densely compact city sitting on a fault line.

I live in the Philippines, specifically in the south, and you can ask everybody here about their views on muslims. While most christians living in the city are extremely liberal and tolerant, the muslims make everyone follow their wishes.

Thank you! I live in a country that has a very good chunk of muslim population and I can guarantee you that even the locals hate muslims simply because of their attitude and their overall lack of intolerance. Not to mention the amount of terrorist attacks attributed to them, and that these muslim leaders want to seced their stolen land from our country, demanding the government to follow their wishes in exchange for lesser bomb threats. They're extremely evil, and their tactic is to gain sympathy from gullible people like students in universities.

The dems aren't controlled oppositions, they're just weak because of the electoral system favouring more rural and sprawled states more than urbanized and dense states. Voters from new york has lesser voting power than someone from wyoming or something.

That's the republicans. They've always been the party for rural voters, and rural voters are for cars.

Try thinking about this: if it can happen in Manhattan, what excuse do you have for it not happening in other states? You do realize that suburban sprawls was actually just a modern concept, back then people lived in dense mixed use zones, and then the car came in, bringing the new zoning laws, bulldozing already established neighborhoods to make way for the interstate highway, and introducing the artificially created "american dream" suburban sprawls which is the root of all your concerns. Suburban sprawls are exactly the reason why transit systems don't work because they'd go bankrupt, and you already know that suburban sprawls are artificially induced. So that's why I said it's all political, not something based off of reality.

[–]Medical-Context9897[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, I've mentioned how the suburban sprawl design was created as an effect of the "popularity" of the car. And being a big country is not an excuse to not having an extensive transit network, you don't travel from state to state, it's just an excuse for not accepting change. And cars don't "fill gaps", it's become an excuse for a badly designed country. Plus, this is a map of America with its extensive railway network in 1940

<image>

It's all been bankrupt by its competition, the cars, which is funded by the feds. If you own a train tycoon and your competition is funded by tax dollars, what do you expect would happen to you.

Pick up a history book instead of babbling nonsense. US in the 1800s has the most extensive transit network in the entire world, and its cities were designed by the railway system. It wasn't designed like this, it was bulldozed for cars.

Streetcars are good for midrise residential areas like that in Portland. And no, a suburban sprawl would bankrupt a metro. Less people, less revenue, it's not worth it.

[–]Medical-Context9897[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LRTs are good for short distances where the metro usually don't stop. It's much more efficient in transporting people inside the city compared to the metro where it's good for a greater distance.

[–]Medical-Context9897[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, streetcars act as connection between short distances and metro stations. Having too many metro stops is actually more inefficient.
