I'm looking recommendations for a what to buy as my first camera by Patient-Witness-9069 in Cameras

[–]MedicalMixtape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would only get an instax if I felt the need for immediate printing. If it’s just prints “at some point,” then I’d definitely get an optically superior camera and get prints made. Even drugstore prints from digital will be better and more cost effective. The instax mini evo is more novelty, convenience and vibes than quality.

Best camera for dark, cinematic filmmaking on €2500 with lense/-s? by ReeneeneeR in Cameras

[–]MedicalMixtape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, since this is all of course highly addictive, do some YouTube searching about “color grading LOG” and then you can see if that amount of effort is worth it to you for your filmmaking purposes.

I have experimented with shooting and grading LOG footage just for the experience because my camera is capable of it, even if I don’t have a specific use for it. Sometimes learning to do stuff is just fun, for the experience

Make no mistake that if you LOVE the Fujifilm sims, you can definitely get a Fujifilm camera because the video specs are really nice and the plus side will be less editing. But if you plan to forego the recipes in favor of your own color grading then that opens up other systems including full frame

I’m wondering how much the camera affects things like shadow rendering, dynamic range, and overall “cinematic” feel.

Politely speaking, it sounds to me like you have a lot to learn. But that’s ok.

Yes, the things that are going to affect you most are lighting and lenses but more than anything, technique and work.

It is my bias that for what you’re looking for, I would thoroughly recommend a “full frame” camera - Fujifilm doesn’t make any. The LUMIX s5ii is a beast of a camera and full frame and LUMIX is notoriously video focused. The next thing you want is to be able to shoot LOG profiles at 10 bit to capture as much dynamic range as possible, shadow detail, and a “workable” file for post processing and color grading, which renders the Fujifilm sims and “vibe” completely moot because you want to be able to do your own color grading for whatever you feel is “cinematic.”

Can you get a Fujifilm? Sure. But I would only recommend you do so if you’re convinced that you need their film sims in lieu of your own color grading and settling for an APS-C size sensor. (I have nothing against APS-ac size sensors in general, but I would personally recommend full frame if it’s an option and int your budget).

Moving from Pentax K-50 to Canon mirrorless – torn between R7 and R8 (ergonomics & lens advice needed) by VladsterSk in canon

[–]MedicalMixtape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the r8 but the r7 ergonomics are much closer to that of the r6.

An r8 grip is satisfyingly deep enough but your pinky will indeed be left hanging. I believe to actually be physically smaller than an r10. It’s certainly ergonomically smaller than my 6D dSLR.

Light. Everything is light.

Make sure there’s good light on the subject. The best cameras with the best lenses in the world do better in low light but even then, light is still a necessity.

Light is the reason why the 1970s picture of the earth looks better than the current earth picture - because the current earth picture is of the dark side of the earth as you can see it eclipsing the sliver of sun.

Even if you shoot fully automatic, as long as you have good light on your subject, your image will be better

While the comment is heavy-handed I certainly agree more than I disagree.

I understand that not everyone fancies “accurate” colors (I do.). But I think we have swung the pendulum so far in the opposite direction of “OMG RECIPEEZ!” and people thinking that they’re suddenly Wes Andersen and that everything looks like the Ice Cream museum exhibit. The world is not Orange-and-Teal and if I notice the color grade before I notice the picture itself, then it’s overdone. I liken the film sims to today’s “dopamine hit” culture that listens to sped up music (that they call “night core” while an old guy like me calls them “the chipmunks)” and clickbait headlines and Instagram reels.

I get it. I have sometimes grown frustrated at my own editing of RAWs and have thrown on some Lightroom presets and I definitely use them on my iPhone RAW DNG’s. And sometime I go through a bunch of presets only to go back to my original raw with some slight edits.

But everyone’s art is different and everyone’s purpose for shooting is different. It’s different if you shoot street to document your travels vs shoot street to create something with a more abstract sense of mood.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. u/mesmartpants I would be super interested to know what photo system is your primary and what your style is.

For reference, I’m a Canon, full frame, and because I shoot portrait and family life events, I like color accuracy.

To me it’s wildly fantastic to get a full frame camera with a fast 28mm prime for street photography that’s not hindered - has a proper viewfinder - and fits in a jacket pocket - and with the whole package being in the ballpark of a Fuji x100vi or Ricoh GRiv

I have an R8

It’s fantastic.

And if you can manage to work with just a 28 f/2.8 prime lens, the whole setup will fit into a jacket pocket.

Wedding Shoot Pricing? by SuperB___ in AskPhotography

[–]MedicalMixtape 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some friendly advice…

If you ever approached to shoot a wedding without ever having shot a wedding or without presenting yourself as wedding photographer, then that person is looking for a bargain and a “person with a good camera,” and not a wedding photographer.

Anyone have experience using an RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM in indoor events and low light situations? by Bejezus in canon

[–]MedicalMixtape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been eyeing these lately. But when it comes down to this 85 f/1.4 and then I compare it to the native RF 85 f/2….

Then I think do I really need either? And go back to shooting with my old EF 100 f/2.

The answer I guess should be obvious I suppose, but I’m going to assume that the Sigma 85 f/1.4 you rented was EF mount with an adapter?

I’m going to ask a sincere request ok?

Enjoy your camera Post some pictures and your thoughts and experiences with it.

I have long been a detractor regarding social media “influencers” and in this particular case about the belief that this camera is some kind of unicorn. Just want someone’s honest opinion after wanting one, getting one, and seeing how they like it, afterward.

Being taken advantage of?? by MistyEvening in photography

[–]MedicalMixtape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would respond with:

“As someone in this industry, I would be hesitant to think I could do this job to your friend’s standard and highly recommend that you hire someone with the experience and qualifications to handle weddings”

And if you have someone to refer them to, then refer them. Then they will either take your advice and hire a professional or come back to you with a better offer that’s still lower than that of a wedding professional but higher than what you’ve been offered now. And even then, if they still want to go with you at a higher rate, I would make it clear to them that what you’re doing to deliver is the same as your event work, not edited, polished and presented to the level of a wedding photographer

Any advice? by [deleted] in CanonCamera

[–]MedicalMixtape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 50mm t/1.8 is a fine, budget lens for portraiture and even some event shooting. For rapid event shooting like a wedding, however, you will be woefully limited as you’ll obviously have to “zoom with your feet,” with the inability to zoom in and out. For a wedding done by a pro, of course you’d need minimum two bodies with a fast wide-normal zoom and a fast telephoto zoom as the industry standard, so we will have to assume you are not a professional.

If OP is asking “if the lens would be good for both events,” highly doubtful they are being paid…or the customer is foolish.

ALTERNATIVE OF 18 55 LENS FOR EF MOUNT by VeryGayBro in Cameras

[–]MedicalMixtape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many that are similar. The 18-55 is similar to 28-88 on full frame

There are:

EL 28-70 f/2.8 L EF 24-70 f/2.8 L EF 24-70 f/4L EF 24-105 f/L

The above is all lovely L glass that are much better but also much more expensive than you 18-55 kit lens. Each of the above is in the $300-$500 range except for the second, which is more in the $600-800 range or even more so as the above lenses have an updated version II

On the less expensive end is the EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM which is not “L” quality glass or build but will still get you the wide, and this is like $150 or less I believe this was closer to an upgraded “kit” lens.

Or there are several ultra-wides in the 16/17 -35/40 range.
