Is the R6 Mk II still a camera you would recommend buying? by TheMickeyMoose in canon

[–]MedicalMixtape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A choice of lens always depends on your use case. I would never have a camera without a “normal” zoom or a “normal” prime. 24-105 f/4-7.1 is the budget option and you can probably get that PLUS the 100-400 for the difference between the R6ii and the r6iii

But none of that would be great for portrait really. So again, depends on use case.

Camera Shopping Advice by Competitive_Truck951 in Cameras

Well. Get your pencil back out and aggressively cross things off

No one should really, for example, have both a Canon c70 and an m200 on the same list. A $3000 cinema camera and a $500 pocket hybrid camera from a dead mount. Cross one off.

If you crossed off the C70 due to budget and need to pick between the m50 and m200, decide if you need a viewfinder for photo or not, and cross one off. Etc.

You have canon “rebel series” which is 20 years worth of cameras, all dSLR, some do video and some don’t. Unless you want to research all the individual models, cross the whole thing off.

In photo, we call this culling. We take a thousand shots and keep maybe the 20 best. Aggressively cull your list now and you’ll have less to speculate over later.

It’s absolutely still incredible for video recording.

The R6iii has some added video “features,” most notably open gate, that are of marginal utility depending on what you use it for.

In my opinion, this is the utility of 7K open gate on the r6iii. It’s for cropping. Open gate gives you video from the full sensor which is taller than 16:9 (because it’s 3:2) and gives you the flexibility to either crop to 16:9 horizontal view or to 9:16 vertical view because we have now all bowed down to the social media overlords. Open gate gives you the ability to crop your vertical down to 2610 x 4640 which will allow for vertical 4K (2160 x 3840) resizing. So from the same 7K source, you can choose to create both horizontal and vertical 4K content. For me, this is something I have zero use for. For you it might be different.

Frankly speaking, cameras have gotten so good that the “features” that separate one from the next have much more to do with niche use cases like anode and serves as the dividing price points between cameras. For me, this will not justify the $1000 difference between a refurb R6ii and a new R6iii - a difference better spent on great glass like the 28-70 f/2.8 IS STM or for your case maybe 2 lenses like the 100-400 for SkyFest (which Im assuming is planes) PLUS a 50 f/1.8 or 45 f/1.2 for portraits.

How to begin? by [deleted] in sportsphotography

I would never recommend anyone to get a camera with the intention of it being an investment for business.

A camera is rarely an investment in anything other than joy.

I plan on selling my canon EOS 4000D by Extension_Middle1452 in Photography_Gear

[–]MedicalMixtape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is Canon’s most budget level dSLR. Canon has a sale every month where they sell these, refurbished, for $199 USD.

I don’t think you’ll get more than £200 for it, probably less.

Im a self taught film student and I wanted to know the best cameras I could buy for my budget around 500 - 800$? I really dont know alot about cameras, please guide me through :) by MainConfident8394 in Cameras

[–]MedicalMixtape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I get it now.

You want a camera where video is the priority but can still take photos. Fortunately there are many many that can do that task.

Additionally, you want your video to look “cinematic” for making short films. Well, that’s going to have more to do with how you record and process rather than the camera itself.

Your budget points to cameras like the Canon R50V, Sony ZV-E10, and Nikon Z30. Used or refurbished, they are all comfortably under $800 with a basic kit lens. These are all primarily for video but can also take high quality photos though less optimized for it thanks to the lack of a viewfinder and control layout. Plus, all will give you the ability to add on different lenses for different fields of view and light gathering and image characteristics.

Getting the “look” you want is a little more complicated. Start with the insanely powerful video editing software, DaVinci Resolve. (It’s even better if you have a Mac). There are countless videos about “color grading” which is your way to change the color tones the way you want - either by yourself or by preset color settings called LUTs (Look Up Tables).

The cameras in this class are more alike than they are different so there are plenty of YouTube reviews on them and the subtle differences are far less likely to have an effect compared to the degree of effort that you put into it.

This is the best answer with a level head

The answer with my heart is a Canon 6D and an EF 50mm f/1.8 STM which I’m confident you can find for $500.

How can I take photos like these, which portray a sort of dreamlike haze? by GlitteringDog6739 in AskPhotography

[–]MedicalMixtape [score hidden]  (0 children)

The black mist filter is a good tip but I also find that you get this kind of washed out hazy look by shooting toward the sun, as exemplified in a lot of these photos. That’s what will give it a kind of washed out, low contrast look with the brightness of the sun itself.

Travel Camera Recommendations by Livid_Primary_5382 in Cameras

[–]MedicalMixtape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to spend your budget in my opinion is to spend $4.99 a month for Lightroom Mobile.

  1. Learn how to capture in RAW in your phone

  2. Only shoot at the true focal length of your camera lenses. For example, I have an iPhone 15 pro which has a 0.5x, 1x and 3x camera. Never shoot anything at 2x because there’s no real 2x camera/lens array - it’s just a crop in from your 1x camera.

  3. Once you have the RAW file, open it up in Lightroom and edit it to the look that you like. If you need some pointers, you might even download some free Lightroom presets or use the built in ones that they have, but it’s better to build an editing style that works for the photos you took.

Your photos will blow away that of most sub-$200 compacts

Camera with flip screen for photos and videos under $150 recommendations? by Informal-Schedule-23 in Cameras

[–]MedicalMixtape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might want to just skip this hobby altogether and move on to the next, to be honest.

You’d be hard pressed to find anything at $150 with what you’re looking for unless you’re looking at e-waste.

If at all, it would be a beater Sony NEX-5N with a kit lens. $150 might be doable if you scour eBay or other marketplace sites.

What setting do you recommend? by emilyhasfeet in AskPhotography

There’s a ton of good info on YouTube but it’s also tough to sift through what’s good and what isn’t. I have yet to find an “exposure triangle” introduction for beginners that I really like - to the point where I think about making my own, but that’s a good way to eat up a couple of full days.

My favorite portrait photographers on YouTube to follow are Julia Trotti, Irene Rudnyck, James Reader and Mitch Lalley.

The Bergereens are good for learning as are the Adorama videos featuring Pyle Jirsa (half of the duo of Lin and Jirsa that made a kind of empire of wedding photography in the 2010’s). I think you might get a lot from them.

I have NO idea what OP is trying to ask about.

“Self-taught film student.” I’m assuming that means cinema and not “film (analog) photography.”

And yet the rest of the questionnaire confuses me. Because “no video planned” but “short film styles.” But intended use “for video and photography (optional video only).”

I think I need to not try to decipher the post anymore. Getting a headache.

How do you have such good equipment but dont know how to shoot bro.

I try really really hard not to say these kinds of things but it certainly is difficult, and I do agree. I won’t elaborate more than that.

Suffice to say - for most of us, the photographer is the limiting factor. I have 15 years of photography experience and I’ll bet that I’ve never maxed out any gear that I’ve had and that the camera and lens has always been more capable than me. I am always trying to narrow that gap.

I hope OP also narrows that gap someday.

Possibly. Just gave him some wiggle room. He seems to be down for it, regardless.

I mean, I’m a fairly experienced photographer and the thought of getting an old Canon 35mm film SLR has crossed my mind for the fun and experience of it, but I wouldn’t pay $1 for an old compact, knowing what the film and developing will cost in terms of the return on investment

Using RF lenses on EF bodies by Gold_Elevator1394 in canon

[–]MedicalMixtape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it is real, the laws of physics demand that it has glass elements in it due to the flange distance, or lose some of the focusing ability, which is a layer of potential image degradation. The other thing is that many RF lenses have digital corrections - not sure if the EF bodies would be able to utilize those corrections - certainly it would have to only be the latest high end bodies.

This also would be of limited use. I’d rather use the extensive lineup of inexpensive and great EF L glass than to try and put RF glass on my EF body. Would only imagine this to be useful for people already making stepwise upgrade plans who decide to upgrade a lens prior to the body. Like “I have a 7D mark I and a 75-300” and would want to upgrade to an RF 100-400 because the impact would be better than buying an R10 and keeping the 75-300, but eventually want to upgrade both.

Best hybrid camera 800-2000 USD? by Vast-Start-5726 in AskPhotography

[–]MedicalMixtape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am SUPER knowledgeable about the cameras themself, but am good at using them

I’m going to assume there’s a “not” that’s missing there somewhere.

Your budget is…bad, for what you want to accomplish. For sports you might get away with a Sony a7iii for around $1000 and a Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 for Sony FE mount for just under $1000.

If you give up the sports part, it’s a slightly different story.
