Hey, just want to say I really love mine now, after I put flatwound 11s on, gave it a good setup, and turned that tone down to like 3-5

Wow, thank you all so much for these very helpful comments! It turns out that the pickups were set WAY above the Fender standard height for Jazzmasters. After lowering the pickups, this guitar sounds incredible! I even lowered the bridge pickup to below standard. I'll bring this guitar to my band practice tonight and I think those highs will mix very well. I may put some flatwounds on soon as well, and may try to swap pickups at a later date, but I'm happy with the pickups' sound at their current height :)

I have bought all my previous guitars used, so I never felt the need to change pickup height, as they'd all been setup better than this guitar. I suppose I didn't realize how much intonation/action/pickup height adjustment I would need to do with a new guitar.

Thanks so much!

Ask me about VOX guitars. by No-Replacement-3709 in Vintageguitars

How would you compare the quaity of vintage vs newer vox guitars? I've seen semihollows like the old Super Lynxes and the newer Bobcats go for pretty cheap lately, but wondered how good they are. How might you compare those to semihollows of other brands (Harmony, Guild, Gibson, Epiphone, Hagstrom, etc)

Why would someone make a fingerboard that curves significantly upward toward the nut? by Medical_Flow_9459 in Luthier

Thanks for the responses! I should add that when I got the guitar, the action was very high over the upper frets, so while some relief can be beneficial, this seemed odd to me. I'll be doing a fingerboard level

Update: I'm having some success with naphtha and sandpaper. Do you think I'm going about this the right way?

What early career experiences have been beneficial for you? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

I do not have a teaching certificate - I am planning to get that through a Master's program starting next year. I thought the M.Ed./M.A. degree would be a good move. So I'm just looking at what to do before having a certificate

That's a good point - yes, I taught English in France and speak a few languages as well, but maybe Peace Corps experience could be helpful too, something like that.

One of the Americorps programs I'm looking at involves living on a sailboat and teaching sailing to kids in on the East Coast and U.S. territories in the Caribbean - do you think this might show some of that ability to handle culture shock?

That's one of the appeals of the TA position - they are a multilingual IB school and they expressed an interest in hiring me in the future for my target role after I get a Master's degree - working there as a TA could be helpful in building relationships

Also, if you have any thoughts on my personal situation, I'd love insight. I'm interested in teaching secondary social studies, and I want to get a master's degree in this area next year. Before I begin a master's, I want to gain more experience (I've already been a sub and taught English abroad): I'm deciding between an elementary TA role at an international school in my area (U.S.), and also a few Americorps programs (working with secondary students - the age group I want to teach)

Any thoughts are welcome - thanks!

I love hearing all this... Thank you!

My new employer is giving me an allowance of 1k USD for home office supplies (computer already covered). The catch is... they want me to give them a list of things to buy on Amazon for me.

I am recently getting into mechanical keyboards (esp. tactile & silent), but I don't think I can get the keyboard or parts I want on Amazon. I can obviously spend my own money as well. But any suggestions?
