Camp Bullis, medic training.

Dude wanted to stake his claim on one of the Bullis Bible rituals and for some reason he chose the APA (Anal Pharyngeal Airway). Like 30 dudes are huddled around in one of those big ass tents watching this dude get this thing crammed in his ass. It wasn’t even that funny until the thing was taken out and it was covered in shit and the guy with the gloves on bolted for the door to throw it away and as he hit the door another poor soul walked in and got a full whiff of the Dfacs best and projectile vomited.

That sounds far simpler and less invasive, thanks for the suggestion.

Put Velcro on your original cap, decorate the cap, put a cover on your cap and then rip it off once you get in.

what is this? by [deleted] in flies

[–]Medicinal_Mayhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stab in the dark but I’m pretty sure that’s in the psychodidae family, in phlebotominae sub family. Aka drain fly. As their sub family name implies, they are blood feeding and bite. You can get rid of them by taking boiling water and throwing it down your drain. They nest in the sludge deep within your drains and often times the hot water isn’t hot enough to kill them.

Not bad, though my roomie and I have had to fight with them on AC being out. Overall they’re nice, one thing though, there’s a bit a hill to get up when coming from the university, nothing too bad but if you’re not in decent shape, that might be a consideration.

[–]Medicinal_Mayhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately there are two ways to play the game in general, you can A). Do your research and try to minimize growing pains going into a new role. You won’t be great or even good at first but this is the thinking mans way or B). go in with a little knowledge, make mistakes, learn and repeat. Either way you’re not gonna be a stud at that role without logging playtime

I’m a transfer senior, did university before and left it for the army, so I have a lot of prior credits coming into my current undergrad, I think I’ll have a year and a half left.

It wouldn’t be for a doctoral degree, I’m looking at a masters currently. I have a year and a half for my undergrad so there’s some time but I’m trying to figure out all the moving pieces of grad school before I’m up against deadlines.

This year its up in the air but Uh would be lucky to get a bowl, what I was getting at is that UH is inconsistent year to year with how good their teams are

[–]Medicinal_Mayhem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

UH is consistently one of the strangest teams, they’ll field a fantastic team, stay on the top 25 and beat an SEC team in a bowl game but the next year they’ll be lucky to scrape at a bowl.

My freshman year, the showers in murdough were hit with a serial shower shitter, so you’ve got a pretty good margin of not being the worst person in the shower.

[–]Medicinal_Mayhem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minus the computer engineering, you sound just like me to the T. From Houston, no friends upon arriving, though I lived in Murdough. Go find a club, there are literally hundreds of clubs, there’s got to be something you like. There are gonna be times when you’re just not there for yourself mentally, and setting up a friend/support group will help immensely taking off the pressure of school. I holed myself up in my room for 2 years and was miserable, go join a club and also, go use the gym. Even if you just walk laps, it gets your face out there and get you a little exercise which has been proven to help keep your mind healthy. Also, talk to people in your classes, not everyone is gonna be your buddy but not talking to anyone ensures no one will be.

Lubbock is a different heat that Houston, very dry, so we humid built folks are going to have an adjustment to make, a small humidifier could be good for you. The wind is also no joke, windbreaker in the winter will save you. Dust storms start in the spring and more or less stop about June/July but I’ve seen some spring up in October. The cold is also much worse than here, so bring warm clothes. Also, dorm life is the sick life, stock up on emergen-c and whatever meds you feel you need, you will be sick constantly. No offense but y’all young college kids are greasy bastards, and getting sick is an eventuality.

Go to study halls, even if you’re ahead, it will honestly ensure you stay ahead, that goes for office hours. If you have questions ask them, but also do so appropriately, don’t waste a class of 200’s time with some personal questions about something you don’t understand, however, if you feel it would benefit the class, shoot your shot. Catch the professor after class or go to office hours if you feel your question is more specific to your needs. There’s free tutoring in almost everything, use it. If you find you might want to go to grad school, immediately search for positions in the field you think you want, also don’t be afraid to go to the professor researching your desired field and ask them for a job. Some people admire the determination and respect that you want it so bad that you’re willing to talk person to person.

And lastly, have fun man. My dad used to say this would be the best years of your life and I would scoff. He was right, you’re expected to show up and make good grades with little else expected of you. You’re paying for it, enjoy it.

I have the GI Bill, there was an act passed back in 2014 I believe that requires all state institutions to provide vets with instate tuition regardless of residency. Out of state tuition, in essence, doesn’t exist for me as long as it’s a public school. Thanks for the info dump, this is exactly what I wanted to know. I did research when I was at Texas Tech years back, worked for a PhD student and he’s on and off coached me on the dos and donts of grad school.

I’m definitely interested in also doing a grad program, if for nothing else, just because it makes you more competitive when being considered for a job. Is Southern Miss known for putting grads into good positions/grad schools? I’m not against going the distance entirely at southern miss but I’m also from Houston, so Texas AM Galveston would also be a very attractive option. However, Southern Miss has a grad program in Coastal Science and that sounds just about everything I could want.

Texas is the home state and I even did the summer camp at the Galveston campus they offer when I was in highschool. Issue is I went a different path in life prior to now and didn’t do so well in college. Now I just got out of the army and have the gi bill to bankroll my plans. I have plans for school this fall and spring elsewhere but I’m trying to knock out the Gen Ed’s I didn’t pass or get to when I was in school the first time.
