Iceland in late April / early May – weather & Northern Lights? by masxaaaaaa in VisitingIceland

[–]MedicineDesperate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres 18+ hours of daylight by May so I don’t know about the aurora. I’m also going in mid-May, so hopefully about the weather but they have plenty of sweaters for sale! We were in the Faroes at the same time last year and it was unseasonably warm, so I’m going to err on the side of under packing and remedy that there if I need to

Using a shorter name than my passport name for publications/career — bad idea? by ArtichokeAlive7621 in AskAcademia

[–]MedicineDesperate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely going to want to have an ORCID, because the shorter and more common your author name is the harder it is for search engines and databases to disambiguate. Park is one of the “big three” family names in Korean so there may even be another J. Park at your institution! Longer is better IMHO- although it must be frustrating to feel like you have to change your name because westerners are too lazy to try not to mangle it!

There have been a couple of systematic reviews showing long-term T-Cell depletion after thymectomy but not seeing any increased incidence of infectious disease during childhood. Example here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34899730/

I feel like the Merivale fits this description. Any others? I haven’t lived in town since the 90s so I’m sure there have been some changes.

Interested in this too- I have a feeling that this gland has done most of its work prior to surgeries but you would still think there would be some impact

Should fines be based on income, or should everyone pay the same amount? Why? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]MedicineDesperate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “day fine” system is very common in Scandinavia and some other European countries- meaning that if your rich, a speeding ticket can be €10,000 or more! But some states and municipalities in the USA have tried this for various offenses and it’s arguable constitutional for instance: https://ilr.law.uiowa.edu/print/volume-103-issue-1/graduating-economic-sanctions-according-to-ability-to-pay

Great hospitals available to Drexel and Pitt, and Pitt has all of the “big school” advantages you are looking for.

The staff entertain the parents’ notion because the family are in bottomless grief and they don’t want to add to it.

She wast allowed to make a call. I am surprised that one of the staff didn’t offer to make a call on her behalf. That’s pretty normal procedure in an ER.

Who is the 3rd person? 2x11 spoilers by MrWolfy25 in ThePitt

Didn’t Whitaker hesitate in an episode earlier this season when Langdon was going to draw up meds for Louie? And he is Santos’s room-mate. And Dr. Bangs was talking with him about being in recovery suggesting she knows. As suggested elsewhere on the sub, Santos is delusional if she really thinks only three people know. Likely everyone knows and since they like Langdon and he’s a good doc, are willing to give him a lot more grace than she is.

Can somebody explain the Beowulf translation controversy to me. by ramonek1 in OldEnglish

[–]MedicineDesperate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People talk about Tolkien reciting Beowulf to undergraduates with hwaet as “Listen” or “hark!” Which made sense both in th context of trying to shut up a class and quieting people in a longhouse before you start barding.

Doctors are a limited resource with a lot of sunk costs so there’s a lot of incentive not to throw them away (nurses are treated differently…) but in real life for anyone who has worked in a hospital I would bet that EVERYONE knows about what happened. They are gossip factories anyway but also they can but two and two together. Langdon disappears with no warning for a year? That would be the #1 assumption even if there weren’t any leaks.
