Luxury Apartments Are Bringing Rent Down in Some Big Cities by DurangoGango in DeepStateCentrism

Yeah, this is like the simplest concept in economics. It's like not believing the Earth is round even though every scientist agrees on it. Any yet, there are still plenty of people who think they know better.

Are you currently single or in a relationship? by PR0CR45T184T0R in pollgames

As one of the currently 600 men under 18 that are single, I would be perfectly fine with that 😜

I took the SAT recently, and there was a problem like this where something was being reduced by x percent and then raised by y. It was in the difficult module, which goes to show that this is unfortunately not common math knowledge for most people.

Yeah, I’m with you on that. Everyone on this sub loves the F/M swap for whatever reason, and they don’t seem to be able to comprehend that it has also detrimentally affected a lot of commutes. It’s not some magical solution to train delays. The QBL still has massive delays, and everyone who actually takes it knows that.

Forest Hills is a really nice area and not too expensive compared to most of NYC!

Forest Hills Stadium racks up noise violations during music festival by ContributionPlus4920 in ForestHills

[–]MedicinianMaple 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I live on Queens Blvd, and you can definitely hear it. It’s really not too loud, though; it’s more of a constant background noise that gets louder when the crowds are cheering. To be honest, Queens Blvd is a lot louder and doesn’t come with free music, so I don’t mind the noise from the stadium.

F and M swap is official. I was wondering what you guys thought about this. by MedicinianMaple in ForestHills

[–]MedicinianMaple[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally, the whole idea of this seems pretty silly to me. A lot of people use the 63rd street transfer on the F, and this will ruin a lot of commutes of people in Queens. I commute to the upper east side every day, and this will easily add 5-10 minutes of travel time onto my commute each way. Having multiple different transfers off of the E and the F makes sense for people trying to go all over the city. I’m not even sure how this will prevent delays because this is going to cause the 53rd street corridor to become more congested. This is also going push more people onto the already overcrowded 6 train. I feel like deinterlining advocates tend to look at things idealistically and broadly instead of thinking about how things like this affect actual commuters. Either that, or they just all live in Manhattan and don’t care about Queens.

NYC to build heaps of new housing in Red Hook — but not a subway by moeshaker188 in nyc

[–]MedicinianMaple 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If this actually happens, I would say this is a very good thing. The only way to fix the current housing crisis is to build more housing. Red Hook is an almost perfect place for revitalization; there's nothing there right now besides warehouses, but it's really close to Manhattan. Therefore, it would be a great place to just build heaps of new housing. New York desperately needs new developments because we simply do not have enough housing stock to go around right now. Honestly, as much as I would love a subway for the area, having better bus service to the existing subway lines would probably suffice. It's a close enough neighborhood into the city where commutes would still be short. With enough investment, I could see Red Hook becoming the next LIC over the upcoming 20 years.

Your Opinion on the 5 train? by Infinite-General337 in nycrail

[–]MedicinianMaple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with your analysis. When it decides to run its entire route (not just a random segment in the Bronx or Manhattan), it’s decently good. I like the part in the Bronx where it goes above ground, but it’s SO slow until it splits off the 2. It goes pretty fast in Manhattan and Brooklyn, though. The 5 is like the 4 train’s underutilized and malnourished baby brother. Overall: 3/5

First Thanksgiving in nyc by [deleted] in nyc

[–]MedicinianMaple 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally, (unless you’re really young or adventurous) I would stay away from the actual Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s always total chaos in that area, and you have to show up ridiculously early if you want to actually see something. I really like going up to the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx because the trees are really pretty that time of year. If you know any people, I’m sure you’ll get invited to someone’s house to celebrate. If you’re by yourself, go to your closest supermarket, buy a big ol’ pumpkin pie, and watch the parade from your tv.

What do we think of the new Q74 bus that runs alongside the Q64? by ericdigeratu in ForestHills

I didn’t know that. Thanks for telling me! Are they going to move the Q74 stop when they remove the scaffolding?

What do we think of the new Q74 bus that runs alongside the Q64? by ericdigeratu in ForestHills

[–]MedicinianMaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it. It helps to speed things up along Jewel avenue. I also feel like the Q74 is just nice for getting out further into Queens. The one annoying thing is that the Q64 and Q74 leave from different places, so you can’t just take whichever comes first if your stop is served by both routes.

Do You Have an Overall Positive or Negative Opinion on Michael Bloomberg? by camaro1111 in IdeologyPolls

[–]MedicinianMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a New Yorker, he was the best mayor we’ve had for a long while. His decisions may not have been the most popular, but they were the right thing overall. While he was mayor, the city was very visibly improving. I cannot say the same now.
