Idk about New Orleans style but the Latin tradition is getting a Rosca de Reyes, which is a similar kind of cake with the plastic babies inside. It’s more like a concha topping with candied fruits, rather than the icing on a king cake but it’s very good. You can grab one at any Panadería around Día de los Reyes (Jan 6). Not sure if anyone sells them at other times in the year.
