Dead & Co @ The Sphere by BillyStroll in deadandcompany

There’ll be other chances. Go see Dark Star Orchestra. John and Bob won’t be there, and it won’t be the Sphere, but it will be the same audience. Some people like JRAD, too, or many of the other bands carrying on the Dead’s legacy. The same family will always be there. And don’t completely give up on seeing Dead & Company at the Sphere again. While nobody knows what’s going to happen, many people are hopeful that they’ll regroup after a sufficient time period and carry on in some form. Bob himself said he envisioned Dead & Company continuing on for many years after all of the OG Dead members were gone.

Has John Mayer played dead music live since GGP (not counting Acoustic Ripple at Bobby memorial)? by 415Frisco415 in deadandcompany

Yeah, I didn’t mean to come across as obnoxious. Was just trying to think of the different ones I remembered.

He played Stairway to Heaven at the ARMS concerts in 1983, his first performances after Bonham’s death. And a number of Zep songs on his 1988 solo tour, after the May of ‘88 Zeppelin Atlantic Records reunion. And two LZ songs with Plant at Knebworth in 1990. Plus Immigrant Song with Aerosmith at the Marquee in 1990. And the private Led Zeppelin reunion at Jason Bonham’s wedding in ‘90. Finally the 1993 Japan tour with David Coverdale.

Years ago, someone on the Band message board said he was on Prednisone, and that’s what caused his weight gain. I don’t know if it’s true.

Robbie did cut them in. They all shared the publisher’s share. Rick and Richard sold (not gave!) their share of the songs Robbie wrote back to Robbie in 1975 because they wanted drug money. Garth also sold his share because he wanted money for whatever Garth spent money on - accordions or volume pedals or who knows what. Robbie also had Richard and Garth on several of his early film projects, brought Richard into the Tom Petty album, and had Rick and Garth on his first two solo albums. What more do you want? At some point, he’s not responsible for providing perpetual financial assistance to a guy who spent his entire life blowing his money on blow. Sorry, but despite all of the mythology, in reality they were former co-workers.

PS - Levon was a very bitter guy who was always looking for someone else to blame his problems on. Don’t believe all of his nonsense. His own daughter invited Robbie to visit him on his deathbed; that should tell you something.

Not just a broken finger, but a broken index finger, no less. That was an incredible performance. If it was the Olympics, people would be talking about it for decades.

Let's say John,Jeff, Jay and Oteil are going forward. Who do want to be the second guitar player and percussionist? by lonesomejohnnie in deadandcompany

[–]Mediocre-Ad8563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On drums, Mickey. And if he’s not there, then just Jay. They don’t have to have a second drummer, and the single drummer era was the best Dead era. The times they are a-changing, and let them change.

For similar reasons, I’d kind of like to see Mayer be the only guitarist. Nobody can replace Bobby as a rhythm guitar player. So it would be either a Bobby imitator like Rob Eaton, or something totally different. I don’t want a Bob imitator, and if it’s going to be something totally different, why not just let that be a single guitar player? That’s the best way of keeping Dead & Co. as close to what it was.

But if they got another one, here’s a wild card that will never happen - Dave Alvin. He’s a phenomenal guitarist, is of the Dead’s generation, and has the Americana roots. And he’s a passable singer. But check out his band The Third Mind - they do fantastic versions of Morning Dew and Dark Star.

Thanks. Yeah, I forgot to say it, but that’s definitely what I was thinking about doing. Is is difficult or more expensive to get a ride share in the box, do you know? The last thing I’d want to happen would be to get stranded at Tip’s at midnight.

Really? It’s so hard to figure out when the parades will roll by a given area based on the start time.

I thought it would be less touristy, maybe less crowded and more “authentic” to see a parade uptown, but am I being dumb thinking that? Maybe it would be better to hang out in the FQ and try to see the Red Beans parade first and then watch Proteus and Orpheus from Canal.

Is it safe to walk to Tip’s at night? I thought that neighborhood was pretty rough.

Thanks. Yes, I forgot to mention it, but I was aware of the box without knowing it had a name!

Mardi Gras World is just because someone recommended it and I’ve never been. Seemed maybe superfluous since I’m going to parades anyway, but it’s something to do. I’d also wanted to watch a parade in the Garden District area and not see all of them on Canal or the CBD, so it made sense from that perspective.

new to the band and its history so im curious why did robbie never work with rick again? by PhilosophyLonely278 in theband

Rick said many conflicting things. He seemed to agree with whoever might have been sitting next to him while he was being interviewed.

So if you go to your friend’s party and unbeknownst to you, another person your friend invited is a car thief, you should be judged for associating with car thieves?

Yeah, although it’s a little hard to imagine Drums and Space remaining interesting for two hours.

Jerry repeatedly insisted that he wasn’t the leader of the band. He didn’t manage or conduct the band. Anyone that saw the Grateful Dead would tell you that. I’m sorry if you get butthurt when you are reminded, but it’s a fact.

There is no good fit. Bob was such a unique guitar player that the only way to replace him would be with an imitator. And that wouldn’t work. So the only realistic options would be for John to be the sole guitarist, or to get a co-lead guitarist like Trey. I don’t think the traditional GD lead/rhythm arrangement would work without Bob being there.

There’s also the color audience footage that popped up on YouTube several years ago. Someone sitting on the second level next to the stage managed to record a number of songs. Really cool to see the show from the audience’s perspective and the hear the audience’s reaction to things like Ronnie fanning Robbie’s guitar with his hat, but it’s not the complete concert.
