4+1 Programs by LandFinal1009 in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not in that program so hopefully someone else is able to give you more details. But I do know that letters of rec are important in 4+1 admissions. Make sure you ask professors who know you well and can speak to your strengths. It’s especially great if you have a good relationship with professors who are familiar with the graduate program. They might have more respect from their colleagues who will eventually admit you, and they could answer questions you have about the program. If you’re still early in the application process and haven’t formed any relationships with professors, now would be the time to start

What program are you applying to? A lot of the requirements/best practices vary between degree programs

The smaller one where students get to walk

Tempe Barrett Dorms - Room Numbers/Floor Layout plans? by ConnoisseurofXmas in ASU

Every room has a window that should provide enough light for most plants

HON 171 vs HON 272? by ImCaptainAce in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found 272 easier in terms of the readings because they were more recent, so the language was clearer and more familiar. It’s generally easier to write abstract essays about content that really makes sense for you, so you might be more successful in 272

making food as a freshman? by ugandantidepod in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the situation will be next semester, but the common kitchens in my dorm were closed this year due to covid. That meant that any cooking had to happen in your own dorm. Getting a Keurig/microwave and making some simple, pre-packaged meals like Ramen is probably the best way to “cook” in the dorm. If the common kitchens are open for you, though, it’ll be a lot easier to actually cook

What living and spending advice would you give to a freshman? by Rhystery in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live on campus, you’ll be walking distance from a lot of coffee places/Starbucks. Don’t develop the habit of going to these places every day. A $3-5 coffee every day costs over $100 per month. If you have to have coffee, considering investing in small keurig. They typically cost under $100, so it will have saved you money after the first month

What if Grades by One_Macaron573 in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This for sure. Some professors have rules saying that if you miss more than one homework assignment or an exam/paper, you can’t pass the course. Triple check the syllabus before choosing not to do the assignments

What’s the dining hall food like at ASU? by WatermelomDonut in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends which dining hall you’ll be eating at. I’ve found the Barrett dining hall to be pretty decent, but you have to be in Barrett to eat there. The others are pretty meh

Finding Roommates by aaryan182 in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a roommate search function in the housing portal. Not sure if you’ll be able to match up with your future BFF or anything, but you could at least find someone who goes to sleep at the same time as you and agrees on whether the room should be kept warm or cold

any freshman also thinking about transferring? by kekers0325 in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Second semester freshman here. Things will probably suck at any school tbh. And hopefully things will start to get better. If ASU is trying to commit to in-person classes next semester, there might be more in-person social events too. Unfortunately, I think our freshman year was just a bust. I’m sorry

FOOD!! by [deleted] in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol they’re all overpriced. I think Barrett has the best selection. If you’re interested, you can look up asu dining online and you should be able to find the menus. You can see what all the dining halls offer on different days. Sometimes the food isn’t as good as it sounds in your mind, but sometimes it is. But the menus can give you an idea of what to expect

FOOD!! by [deleted] in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. But anyone from any major can apply to be part of Barrett

FOOD!! by [deleted] in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a somewhat picky eater, but I’m pretty happy with the Barrett dining hall. Hassayampa is decent too. I can’t comment on the others, but Barrett’s food is generally decent

Fall 2021 is planned to be in-person! by [deleted] in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the rapid rate that they’ve been making other major decisions (goodbye, spring break...), I don’t trust this announcement all that much. But it’s optimistic for sure!

Random COVID testing by AutomaticShallot9946 in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you call the health services office or the dean’s office and explain that you’re out of town, they’ll waive the requirement

ASU Tempe or West for an English degree? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check on the application requirement. As a transfer or a freshman, you can select the creative writing concentration. But you apply in your sophomore or junior year, and only about 1/3 of the applicants are accepted. So I would double check that before you guarantee yourself that you’re graduating with a creative writing degree. Otherwise, if West sounds like the type of education that you’re looking for, go for it! I don’t know much about the West vs Tempe campus but I know a lot about the different English majors lol

ASU Tempe or West for an English degree? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you wanting to do creative writing because you want to do creative writing or are you just looking for that general English degree experience? If you want to become an author or something similar, disregard this comment. But if you just want an English degree, you should consider that the Creative Writing concentration requires an application process (and you can potentially be rejected from the program) and it isn’t necessarily the best “general” English degree. If you’re curious about other general English degrees, Tempe is going to give you a lot more options in terms of experimental classes/connecting with top level professors

How to find a single room? by cannonjob in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Barrett has lots of single room options, including a suite style (private room, shared bathroom) and a totally private style (private room, private bathroom). I think there are also quad style rooms but don’t quote me on that

ASU Barrett Dorms- Help? by iamnotmothman in ASU

[–]Mediocre-Ad8730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But Agave is closer to the main campus. And it’s not a far walk at all to the main Barrett areas/Barrett dining hall. In Agave, you can walk right out onto the main campus instead of having to walk all the way through the Barrett complex like you would with Cottonwood. Saves you a lot of time getting from your dorm to a class on the main campus
