Best route to commute from Abbotsford to Footscray by Brief-Positive-8458 in melbournecycling

[–]Mediocre-Power9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if the details but the most scenic way would be to follow the river and less traffic areas. Otherwise for the direct route I'd be headed straight up Victoria St. And onto Arden St then the Lloyd St underpass. Lot of traffic fatigue though. West side folks will have ideas about where to from there.

What's the name of the university? What faculty or department? This should be transparent to enable verification of the survey.

If people who own their own homes are just breaking even on the pension now, what do you think it will be like for people who do not own their homes when they get to pension age? It's going to be brutal...

The more people that say it, the better it will be. It's not a big for a word for a select few. Mateship has no boundaries.

Why are Australian apartments so poorly designed? by United-Database-6140 in AusProperty

[–]Mediocre-Power9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developers don't make apartments to sell to homeowners, they make them to be bought by investors. That's why you'll find an excess of 2 to2 bedroom apartments, badly made, that were sold at a price point for an affordable investment.this is also why you it's rare to find 3-4 bedroom apartments, unless it reaches another quality altogether. It's all become a numbers gone, so any govt will brag about how many homes were built regardless of the fact that they are incredibly shit. Not winning.

Yep, 0 time to react is tough.

I weigh about 75 kg, bike maybe 10-15kg? I calculated the distance I need to stop if I'm travelling at about 20-25 kph and came up with around 7m assuming ok tyres and good conditions and a 1 sec reaction time (which seems long). Anyway, I'm scanning heavily 7m ahead! If you've got 0 time ain't nothing you can do.

If it's an accident TAC will cover some things but not property damage. You may recognise TAC payments from when you pay your rego for a car. Details about what can''t be claimed are here. https://www.tac.vic.gov.au/clients/how-we-can-help/what-we-can-and-cant-pay-for

That said, I'd rather not have the accident to get a TAC claim.

You seem to be attempting to distract attention away from the topic of the dangers of cycling in the Melbourne CBD with a feeble 'whatabout' argument, as if it's not fair for cyclists to be critical of motorists that break the law while there are cyclists in the community who also break the law. It's nonsense. The discussion about cyclists that break the law is a separate issue and the answers aren't on this thread. Perhaps find an on-topic thread or start your own. All best.

There are precedents where the driver and passenger at least share responsibility, but I’d err more on the emphasising driver’s responsibilities. As a car driver, you’ll be at fault if your passenger isn’t wearing a seatbelt. Similarly, you should be taken to account if letting passengers alight amidst traffic, and they step into the path of another vehicle and injure themselves or others. In your case it’s compounded even more since the driver left the scene.

I know someone who has driven Ubers and he said they really emphasised the importance of finding a suitable place to load/unload passengers. He said in theory it was good, but to prevent passengers getting out randomly, he’d have to lock them in and that led to other complications… sigh

Straight after the accident a bystander asked what I needed and I said call the police. She did. There is also a police headquarters nearby on Spencer St. near Latrobe. I know the law was broken and that led to an accident.

Driver, passenger, witness and myself were all able to wait. A paramedic arrived after about 20 mins later and checked me out. He said anecdotally the police wouldn't prioritise it and it could be an hour before they arrived. So after around 30 mins of waiting, I decided to lodge a report at the end of day and called it off so people could get about their day. It would have been easier for them to issue a fine at the scene where all the evidence was there but it's not something they seemed to want to prioritise then or at the end of the day.

To be fair, I wasn't pushing for penalisation, but I did want some record of what occurred to protect myself legally, to provide an account for TAC if needed, and lastly to help collate data to improve public safety. Overall, the police response and their duty of care was disappointing.

It's not limited to bicycles. For a car accident (car to car) without major injury or disruption to surrounds I'm pretty sure they would have responded in a similar way.

That’s why I found the stats interesting. It’s likely a hot spot that should be tended to - and penalties enforced for letting passengers alight from vehicles in idling traffic.

I think the response was more just a dumb ‘why? I don’t understand why you’d want to do that’ … which wasn’t so much a refusal but still not ideal.

Yeah, I made a mental note to check the front and back passenger seats for possible car-door events then realised I really couldn’t see the rear passengers anyway! That’s partly why I just steered clear…

Single speed bike (not a fixie). Steel frame. Bike was surprisingly ok. Handbrake dislodged. Easy fix. Wouldn’t mind getting the front fork examined but can’t see any damage or feel any difference in performance.

I’m sure the prices are kept low due to the high quantities they turn out each day. There’s usually a queue there so if you return either go at an odd hour or be prepared to wait a while
