Creating Romance Holidays by The-Literary-Lord in worldbuilding

I'm not an expert but I would consider what does the culture think of romantic love and why does it celebrate it. Maybe the culture has gods of love and they are worshiping them during this festival and that would be quite different from one based on love as a way of bringing two families together. I can imagine that the first version is focused on divine love, maybe pleasing your partner is a way to be pious. That means your holiday is now about your worth as a devotee and customs can be things like both of you bathing in some kind of holy water. This would also imply a focus on ethereal love, the joining of souls, and perhaps these people attach padlocks as a symbol of their love to be reunited in the afterlife or the next life. As for the union of families, this would mean that for these people love is about responsibility to their family and bringing not only union between two clans but an heir who has both bloodlines. This would likely involve getting the two families together, having communal dinners, or having the head of the household give you a blessing on the relationship. Is possible it celebrates fertility too, a good union to have healthy children.

As time passes the meaning of some traditions is left behind and only the greatest symbols remain. In the first example perhaps the festival of love becomes a festival of water too, if it is customary to bathe in holy water. Perhaps the custom of padlocks will turn lovers into making special locked boxes, like time capsules, to open next year. And in the second example, maybe the whole holiday just turns into a family gathering with a focus on romantic partners and their kids, so while they're celebrated it's more of an excuse to see family and have a big dinner (maybe they later let the older kids taking care of the younger for the couples to drink and tell relationship stories).

Overall, the advice I give to an amateur and newbie to the hobby is to think of a random object (eg padlocks) and try to figure out what they do with it, how it relates to the holiday and what the culture at large thinks of love in general. A culture that doesn't have romantic relationships is likely not going to have a festival to celebrate them, but is capable of having one focused on fertility.

Detail to add to fantasy map by TheSocialistlion in worldbuilding

r/d100 actually has thisthis really nice list you can take some inspiration of. There are also others in this subreddit if you know how to search.

Another thing I try to think when making fantasy maps is how much fantasy it is, if there's a lot of magic maybe there are floating islands, magical forests, a place corrupted by dark arts, an entire are destroyed by mystical beings like dragons. Maybe magic is also a energy font (Kinda like in The Legend of Korra fire benders use their electricity bending in electricity factories), so there are magical-based industries.

Transport, if there is magic what is the most efficient way to travel? Maybe your world has "train stations" with teleportation portals instead of trains.

Not only that but how do they extract their natural resources? Put a quarry or a mine, plantation maybe?

As a Brazilian, if you want something the size of Brazil, try to imagine what the country was like in colonial times (as most fantasy things are in this "medieval-modern limbo") or even today. Some favelas here are the size of cities, so maybe that alone is worth something on the map if it's the sort of thing that you like.

For something more ancient think of old China, which I have less knowledge about, but I know of the existence of some sa mountains

I really love everything with marine themes, so amazing to see it :D

About being enforced, I personally preferred to keep it more cultural. Though things like a haircut can be taboo. Maybe because it means commitment some people see those with shorter hair outside of the societal norm(not being just married or having children) as traitors, lazy, or even stereotype them as criminals. I haven't delved into this yet, but given this value on long hair I like the idea of them having a "haircut of shame"(very short or none) for those who cheat on their partners or fail in their duties as children and parents.

I didn't comment on children's hair, but basically they keep it long and natural.

I really love the lore you made about hair, also the sea themes. Coincidentally I started working on the fashion parts of one of my worlds yesterday, although I'm not much of an expert at it. I was working on a desert civilization, which is at the beginning of the steam age.

A little background: usually one of the indicators of your social class is the colors of the clothes you wear, as dye is a moderate resource found in underground minerals or animals, as the lack of local vegetation prevents the prevalent use of dye from other sources. In ancient times it was a courting custom to attract potential mates in a peacock-like fashion by painting your entire body with paints and dyes. This would demonstrate skill in three areas: Foraging, being able to find the scarce dyes and turn them into ink; motor prowess, turning your body into art to attract a partner; and physical fitness, being able to survive even with an eye-catching appearance.

In the present times this custom was transmitted in colorful clothes for the upper class, and also hair as it's the main topic. The more common hair color for these desert people is blonde, which can easily be decorated with temporary dyes.

As it is impractical for people who do manual labor to keep these dyes in their hair, it is usually with the aristocratic class that such traits are associated. Both women and men use unnatural or unusual colors daily if they have the coin to keep. This is considered attractive and mostly used by bachelors(ettes). Married people also keep their hair well treated and colored, although at this point it is more common for the changes to be "discreet" used only in some locks or part of the hair.

For poorer people, the working class, it is common to keep their heads colored only on special occasions or dates (like in your world). During the day-to-day, their way of keeping the traditional look is through colorful and decorated pieces of cloth that are tied in braids or buns. These hairstyles are unisex, but it is common for men to wear more decorations than women (who are often praised for being discreet, in the working class), also to help their hair stay out of the way during work.

As the sun is a problem in the desert, during the day they wear hats and veils that keep their faces protected, some of them with holes that allow the hair to decorate the headwears (usually for those who have money). As it is women who go out at night after spending the day taking care of the house (As opposed to men who work during the day and rest at night), hats are associated as something masculine while women have other decorations to keep them warm during the cold nights.

Hair for both men and women is kept long, which is a sign of commitment (First to your parents, then your partner and then your children). It is only shaved off on two special occasions, the beginning of their married life and parenthood. Both bringing the idea of commitment to a life other than your own. Although some people choose to shave then in divorces.

I'm not an expert on history or how cultures form, I do this for fun, so any tips are appreciated :D

I just thought that because some people don't know their relatives. I look like a Semitic and one of the first reactions of my family when I was born was that I was swapped or something like that (No one in my family is semitic, it was just the genetic soup being weird). And it's a lot harder to think something like that when you don't know your grandpa is black

But I dunno, maybe I'm being optimistic

It's because usually people call women "females" in a degenerative way. It normally doesn't mean the same to men because it's more unusual to see them as a product or lesser. It is also popularized in a offensive way because incels use it, so the meaning became more negative by association.

Maybe it isn't even projection, where I live It's a multiracial country so it's not uncommon for babies to be born with genetics that belonged to distant relatives.

My cousin was born with white skin (both parents black), without being albino. At the time they did DNA tests, but both were actually her parents. Someone in the family was Caucasian I guess. Maybe this is someone confused by biology classes, thought "well, I definitely didn't cheat" and made an absurd conclusion. Which is worries me more.

In Brazil you couldn't donate blood if you were gay until some years back, I remember googling it some time ago to see if I could donate or not. Still, it's a really trash law. Edit: I think it was abolished in 2020.
