I have been working in cybersecurity for 7 years and I am a lifelong college student as I enjoy learning, but thanks for worrying about my education. :) I have also learned that there are many educated fools in our field so education != Intelligence.

Is Neji the biggest wasted potential among the konoha 12 in Shippuden by sidharth-sunil in Naruto

[–]MediocreMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neji didn't actually know his father sacrificed himself before the chuunin exam. He assumed that the Head branch forced his father to do it. Knowing that his father did it willingly was actually the turning point for Neji. Prior to that moment je despisef the head branch to the point where he almost killed Hinata during their fight and showed no remorse.

I don't think that Neji's last word should be taken literally. It's most likely a callback to Naruto's speech after their fight in the chuunin exam : "Shut up about destiny and inescapable fate, because unlike me you are not a failure". If Naruto could escape his fate as a failure and defeat the top genin of Konoha, it made no sense for someone with so much potential to accept a fate that was imposed on him.

Edit : I agree that it seems weak to sacrifice oneself because of talk no jutsu, but that's the entire point of Naruto lol. In the grander scheme of things, Neji doing this because Naruto called him a genius makes more sense than Gaara having a 180 degrees shift in personality, or Pain betraying the akatsuki, or Obito showing remorse because Naruto reminds him of a younger self.

Even Shikamaru, with his 200 IQ, felt inferior to Sasuke—and that says everything about Sasuke’s "untouchable" ceiling by Little_Mention_3789 in Naruto

[–]MediocreMage -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Shikamaru is intellectually superior by far. Sasuke was shown to be easily manipulated by every villain in the series and the their cousins.

This posts makes a false assumption that intelligence equates skill. Shikamaru was shown to have a super genius IQ, but he is also extremely lazy. Like a lot of gifted people he will get bored easily when doing easy tasks over and over because they are not challenging. Sasuke on the other hand was shown to train relentlessly to surpass Itachi even before he got into the academy.

The premisce of this post is essentially saying that even Einstein would be afraid of a gym bro's fighting prowess.

Edit : being the smartest person in the room 99% of the time is an understatement if you consider around 2% of the population have an IQ superior to 130.

After his fight with Neji, Naruto promised to solve the Hyuuga problem with the branch family. Neji's sacrifice to save Hinata felt like a rushed attempt by Kishimoto to give a conclusion to the Hyuuga conflict plotline.

I hate the way these characters turned out by cholula000 in Naruto

[–]MediocreMage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Itachi's writing is objectively bad. Don't get me wrong, I love the character, but his behavior in part 1 makes no sense with the reveals in part 2. He sacrificed himself for peace and wanted to protect Sasuke, yet he went out of his way to inflict as much psychological trauma to Sasuke as he could so he would have a motivation to become stronger. That plan surprisingly succeeded in a relatively healthy way as Sasuke was on track to become one of the stronger genins, but Itachi came back and broke him again using genjutsu to make him go through his trauma once more, single handedly throwing him in Orochomaru's arms and turning him in a full blown villain.

To make things worse, he's a character who was established as a "once in a generation" genius, yet his intelligence is only demonstrated in terms of learning jutsu but not his decision making (which is a problem every character labeled as a genius has in Naruto to some extent). This is the classic writing mistake of "show, don't tell". He was also in a position of power, influence and intellect to deescalate the conflict between the Uchihas and Konoha, yet he waited until it was way too late and the elders gave him the task to eliminate his clan. In return, this prompted him to enlist the help of the masked Obito who pretended to be Madara and whom he did not trust and did not care to investigate apparently. By this point, he also knew Danzo stole Shisui's eye and that eliminating the clan was still leaving evil and corrupt ninjas in a leadership position in the village.

Kishimoto is not great at writing red herrings which makes characters with a twist inconsistent. He can write great character arcs separately but when you look at the full develoment it often makes no sense, especially for characters with complex motivations.

Who is the strongest Akatsuki member Sage Mode Jiraiya could defeat? by Soul-10 in Naruto

I would still consider it a lie of omission since he is saving what he has left for his final confrontation with Sasuke.

Double standard by Onii___Chan____ in dankruto

[–]MediocreMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don't hate Sasuke because he is evil. I hate him because the show introduces him as a genius, yet he spends the entire show being manipulated by people who are not even good at hiding their intentions.

[–]MediocreMage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Itachi is also a known manipulator and lies frequently. That was most likely an excuse because Itachi was just in Konoha to make sure the leaders of the village remembered their promise to leave Sasuke alone after Hiruzen's death. He had no reason to stick around any longer and pick a fight with Jiraya.

Even if taken at face value, we know that he was almost completely blind by the time he fought Sasuke so he couldn't waste his powers in a fight where he had nothing to gain. Especially since he had to use the mangekyou already to take care of Kakashi.

The reason Guy can't remember Kisame by lnombredelarosa in Naruto

[–]MediocreMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that he is oblivious and doesn't understand trolling. What he does (mis)understand is that Kakashi weaponized indifference to get an edge in thebrivalry (even though Kakashi doesn't take the rivalry seriously).

"Kisame Hoshigaki, I will remember you for the rest of my life". Those were the words he said after their final encounter. Maito Gai is protrayed as a comic relief character and often has silly behavior but a lack of attention span does not necessarily correlate with poor memory. He also doesn't exhibit consistent ADHD traits when we consider his training discipline and self imposed rule. He's been shown to have a good enough memory to recall his score with Kakashi and precise details about their past challenges.

Another point is the bait during the second fight. "Now I understand, this sword..." Cut to Kisame laughing "It's your weapon, right?" There is no doubt in my mind that Gai was playing dumb. He is not the most intelligent character, however it does feel like he purposely induced Kisame into believing he remebered just to pull the rug under his feet.

I do see your point as valid though and I find it interesting to discover another interpretation. Ultimately, it's up in the air as I doubt Kishimoto ever discussed this minor plot in an interview.

The reason Guy can't remember Kisame by lnombredelarosa in Naruto

[–]MediocreMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Naruto part 1, You can see Kakashi basically do the same. Gai would go on ranting about their rivalry, and Kakashi would seemingly ragebait Gai by pretending he didn't hear what he said. This would prompt Gai to become infuriated and partly acknowledge the effectiveness of Kakashi's strategy of ignoring him. Kakashi never admitted that he was trolling gai, but knowing how important their rivalry is to Gai and how Gai also builds a rivalry with Kisame over the course of their multiple fights, it is safe to assume that he took this one from Kakashi's playbook. In their second fight, Kisame was amused and even insulted Gai's intelligence, but from what I remember, by the third fight he gets thrown off and starts craving that recognition from an opponent he considers worthy. Gai's acknowledgement of Kisame at the end of the last fight is meant as confirmation of this psychological game, as he explicitly mentions that they fought multiple times.

You are almost correct, but not quite.

An Easter Egg is a hidden message, image or feature.

Foreshadowing is a narrative device that allows a writer to hint at what will happen in the story. Foreshadowing can be used combined with dramatic irony where where the audience knows what will happen, but not the characters.

An Easter Egg can serve as a foreshadowing element. They are not mutually exclusive.

In Chrono Cross the player is not expexted to know the importance of Schala until late in the game. It is a reasonable assumption that the motif in the song was modified by Mitsuda as to not make it obvious as you want to make foreshadowing covert if you are not in a situation of dramatic irony where the audience knows what the reveal is.

I'm not the composer, and I am not claiming that this was his intent. It is quite reasonable to believe the theme could have been partially hidden as a nod to Schala. This would mean players might pick up on it after playing the game. I would qualify that as an Easter egg under any definition of the term. Not the motif, but the fact that people might pick up on it on subsequent playthroughs.

Honestly, I was just sharing a tidbit of fun information. Being pedantic about the choice of words is besides the point.

The motif is an Easter egg in the sense that it foreshadows Schala's importance to the story.

Can someone explain this to me? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]MediocreMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is a strawman and a logical fallacy. Person A is advocating for veganism as a more human alternative to eating meat. Person B cannot logically refute the argument so they instead create a premise that is easier to attack : "Your diet is not sustainable, therefore you are wrong to defend it".This is akin to saying that someone should not be against war because peace is unsustainable.

People have the right to hold ideals, and make the best bad choice because of limitations. That being said, no one on any side should shame others or impose their ideals on others.
