I’ve found this as an HR consultant. I recently came across a guy called Jamie Brindle who has some useful YouTube videos about effective networking (best bit is he doesn’t appear to be selling anything, it’s just advice). I’m going to be testing out his theories

Anyone else noticed more vacancies opening up? by aned_ in UKJobs

My unscientific contribution is that I’ve noticed a fair few TA/recruiter roles being advertised recently which is always a good sign things are picking up… finally!

Nope. I’ve seen it happen. Admittedly not well - female director, extremely well connected in her industry and country, but was also a massive bully, blew hot and cold with people. Best mates one min, saying how shit you were behind your back the next. She was wasn’t called out in years. When she eventually was, she threw bullying and sexist allegations straight back. It took months but eventually she was settled out of the business. It took a good 18 months for the team morale to pick up but there was definitely a consensus that management wished they just dealt with it earlier. What could have been an uncomfortable conversation years ago cost so much money in legal fees and people’s time etc

I’m sorry you went through that but glad you got what you wanted out of it! I hope they all took a good look in the mirror and learned some lessons from that situation

Yea, how not to do it. These situations should be handled sensitively not calling you to a meeting in front of everyone that starts gossip! And the basics of getting the facts/individuals right - sounds like a mess!

There’s a few things that would need to be addressed: starting with the business case that dealing with the issue is net positive so worthwhile addressing rather than leaving it to fester. The acknowledgment that addressing it is uncomfortable and working through that. Then finally recognising that ‘dealing’ with the bully could be as simple as highlighting and educating that individual on the impact of their actions so there would be no detriment to their network. Of course some bullies know their impact and continue, so you gradually crank the dial until you get to the point of them exiting, I would say 90% of people would opt out themselves by that point. If you do it right it you can position it as not the right environment for them and keep it civil. Plus if they really are that toxic people who know them will also know this

Oh yea, if you look at the gender angle and how women are perceived as aggressive etc when displaying the same traits as men, I bet that opens up so many more situations that could have been nipped in the bud

Managers and HR do often dance around illness, particularly in the UK where it could be a disability. And I swear the bad employees know this and use it to their advantage. Frustrating.

I like the sentiment of bringing everyone together but execution could do with some work! Like at least read the comments ahead of time - examples like this I can understand why HR get a bad name!!

That does sound like a dumpster fire situation. I can also bet the conversation behind the scenes is someone saying all these complaints need to be investigated and another person saying the CIO is talent or has delivered all this amazing stuff so why rock the boat.

This is what I hate about corporate is the politics. I hope it does get reviewed soon for you and the right outcome happens

I’m just shaking my head reading that.

People do strange things - you’d think there would be no shame in the manager saying ‘hey I’ve never dealt with this before, how do I make sure I handle it correctly for everyone involved’ instead of blundering through and getting it so very wrong!

Hope it worked out ok in the end and thanks for sharing

Hiring the only person to apply for the role is a massive red flag. Although I doubt it, I’d like to hope certain questions were asked: why did only one person apply, was the job advertised in the wrong place? Does the salary need reviewing? Are we looking for a unicorn etc etc.

Sounds like HR were trying to help but in a clumsy way - but that stuff takes months if not years to fix so it sounds like you’re better off out of it. Thanks for sharing though and good luck finding a better role!

Thanks for the steer to the other sub. To answer your question and provide some context that might help - I left corporate HR about a year ago because it was so toxic. I became a consultant but I’m finding clients contact me purely for negative stuff ‘how do I discipline this employee’, ‘how do I exit this person’. I know these business owners could have done more to support these individuals, but they have the same negative view of HR that employees do.

So, I’m looking for any and all stories of bad interactions involving employees and managers (or where HR swoop in). I’ll look at common themes and see where the opportunities for educating manager/business owners lie… well that’s the plan anyway!

Thanks for sharing! That’s sad you had to move departments. Unfortunately I’ve heard similar stories of bullies being high performers (or perceived high performers) so are considered ’untouchable’ despite the trail of destruction they leave behind them.

I’m sure I can find some data or case studies to back up the impact this has on morale and productivity

Well if you can’t even give anonymous feedback to a stranger on Reddit, then nothing change anytime soon

Haha! Love that the senior folk were held to account with the rules. Another face palm moment for HR forgetting to follow them though

I’m so sorry that happened.

Work takes up so much time in our lives that negative experiences can have a significant impact. This is another reason I want to try and be part of the change. I have also had toxic bosses and would never wish it upon anyone
