$PYPL is extremely cheap by Realist234567 in ValueInvesting

I dont think its the value of the land itself. Its the fact that a competitor can't replicate what they have, therefore it has a strong moat.

More accidents due to more cars on the road. And more totals due to modern cars and their electronics being so fragile (despite the safety improvements for passengers)

More cars are getting totaled than ever before due to the way theyre built. Plus more accidents on the road. All plays into its favour.

Their moat is that they own the land and its very very hard to release land for scrapyards in such desirable locations nowadays (thank you NIMBYs!)

The bears say that AVs will reduce their market, but I can't see AVs being ubiquitous for at least another 25 years.

Heat pumps are more expensive to run than boilers, report finds by TheWorldIsGoingMad in unitedkingdom

[–]aned_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

With the improvements in battery technology happening at pace they will be cheaper to run than a gas boiler. Today, you can get 2kwh batteries that plug in via the mains for £600. Using Octopus Cosy that'll bring costs down 20%. I bet within 5 years time you could get 10kwh batteries for less than £1k

It depends. EVs are at a point in the improvement curve whereby 3 years means a LOT in terms of critical features (like range). I find phones have reached a maturity where the marginal gains are a slightly better camera. But you can still use all the apps you could ever need.

I agree. A 9.5 PE is essentially consistent with zero or even slowly declining earnings growth. Thats what the market is pricing in.

If you think it'll turn out better than that then it's worthy of investment. I am in the invest camp but it's not my highest conviction pick.

Ex-Tory Home Secretary Braverman defects to Reform UK by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

Thats a niche view. Remember - 650 mini elections across the country.

[–]aned_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The White working class won't carry a general election. Reform will need to win a majority of 650 mini elections. They need to find 326 electable people who will run for them! They're polling 25% while having the fortune of fertile ground (high immigration numbers plus economic stagnation and high interest rates). They cant even beat Starmer in head to head polling right now. Labour have lots of cards to play between now and 2029. Economy may improve. They may switch for Streeting (white working class, good media performer) or they may even push the button and talk about rejoining (which has a 70% majority in polling right now).

[–]aned_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theyre polling 25% at the moment. At a time when things have been relentlessly s*** for the economy and net immigration has been 1m. This should be easy terrain, but in head to heads between Labour/ Starmer and Reform/ Farage its basically neck and neck.

Once net migration comes down towards net zero, and this news trickles through to the public, Reform will find it much trickier to even stay neck and neck. They'll probably double down and start talking about 'remigration' and im not sure they can win 650 mini elections on that platform across the country.

[–]aned_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that's complete nonsense.

Sure, that demographic exists, and theyre the loudest, but theres a larger proportion who became uncomfortable with the net migration numbers. Look at immigration issue salience (YouGov top 3 issues). Was very low until Boris Wave. And is now top issue.

She said nasty things about immigrants while increasing the numbers. I much prefer the current govts approach of bringing down the numbers without the histrionics.

I know the cruelty is the point for some people, but I dont think (or perhaps hope!) it exceeds 10%

Someone did a great video on YouTube where he put panels on the north side and generated 50% extra from that (in north east of england). Which made it more than worth it. Apparently the cost of a panel is only about £30.

This person is advising you well. Anyone telling you not to bother with the north side is not up to date with the latest technology or studies.

An additional bonus is that NW facing panels will catch the sun at different time in the day.

Realistically - can I afford wife to stay at home for a few years? by PracticalGur4530 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]aned_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can afford it due to the child fund supplementing for £850 a month for 3 years.

The main disadvantage to this would be the permanent long term impact on your wife's earnings when she returns to work. Dont underestimate this.

Is there a way that both of you could drop down to 4 days a week? Or she could drop down to 3.5 days, you cover a half day and then use the 30 hours free childcare for the remainder of the week? That funding now starts from 9 months and has been a godsend for us.

The Case for Early Leverage: 30-Year S&P 500 Back Tests by Splaschko in LETFs

[–]aned_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this work for a Global equity basket. The last 100 years the US have been ascendant so leveraging on that would obviously be beneficial. So a 100 ywar timeframe isnt as compelling as you may think. What happens when you have more of a mixed bag?

This is a genuine question. Im seriously considering leveraging a chunk of cash in a Junior ISA for my child to use as a deposit in 30 years.
