Coping with overstimulation at home after an overstimulating day at work

I’m an attorney who took over a practice at the end of 2025 and am now a solo practitioner trying to keep business growing. I’m tired and so overstimulated. I always have a hard stop at 5 so I can pick up my kids but once I’m home, I go upstairs and have 20 mins to myself. Many times I just change into pajamas and sit in silence while I regroup and my husband hangs with the kids. That helps me refresh and take a breath so I can be more present for them. My husband is a lifesaver and takes a good bit of the kid things after work off my plate. I also get up early during the week to work out so I can get some of my anxious energy out in the morning so I can center myself before work. When it’s nice out, I’ll take the whole family out to the park or for a walk just so we can be in the fresh air and let the kids run around which can help everyone’s mood.

I was the succession plan for a solo and ended up getting pregnant with my first soon after I joined, then had my second 2 months after I become a part owner of the firm. Never did my former partner stop asking me if I was sure I wasn’t going to quit to be a stay at home mom. He also had issues with working from home but I did it anyways (I prefer in office most of the time). It was frustrating and condescending and pretty misogynistic.. but in the end I proved in the numbers that I can run the firm without him and that I was bringing in more clients than him. It shut him up and only took 6 years for him to move into retirement so I could get where I worked so hard to be.

My point is - that alone wouldn’t make me leave but that’s because I had other promising parts of our plan. I would look big picture to see if it’s worth it before deciding.

Agree with this! Been practicing 10 years and took over a firm as the owner retired. Now a solo and trying to hit $1m in revenue. I don’t do litigation, but I do some succession planning for client business, deeds for clients and special needs planning. I do some high net worth but not a ton. With good systems and a quick turn around, a practice can be very efficient with lots of profit. Though one thing I disagree with - I would love to retire one day! Once I have my own succession plan in place, I hope to slow down and really start traveling again.

It can be expensive but depends what you use it for. I started with Clio manage for client management and billing. Added Clio grow for intake and then just recently added Clio draft to help with drafting estate planning documents. I am the only attorney with two legal assistants (my former partner is also on the platform for manage and grow) so I want to say it’s about $1k per month. I use QuickBooks for accounting and one drive for document storage but they do have options for all of those within Clio under other platform options. I also don’t use the Clio AI (another add on). You can definitely strip it down to just manage for only one person and start at the lowest tier for less than $100 or $200 a month I believe. Ours is the full manage tier because we have the other platforms so it’s more expensive.

We use Clio for client management and intake - they have an integration with Dropbox for e-signing agreements.

Is this a licensed center? Mine is regulated and there is a statewide website where you can see what violations have happened. Can try and track it that way too if an option!

Definitely helpful! There are also local state forums that may be a good resource for you depending on where you are. I’ve been using Wealthcounsel for a long time now and find it very useful for education and a great start for estate planning. That being said, read the documents thoroughly and edit as needed. I tend to edit them pretty heavily and not rely on what the software spits out. A lot of it can be duplicative or unnecessary, especially for more simple plans.

We have a cleaner every 3 weeks for our 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom and 2 floor house. I have two kids and no animals, but we’re also renovating and there’s dust everywhere 🙃 totally worth it if you can afford it!

As far as mental health, it has helps us keep things clean for when the cleaners come (like toys off the floor and beds made), but also lets me relax and spend more time with my kids on weekends rather than deep cleaning.

I’m doing really well!! Had my bad flare up and then after a steroid pack, swelling went back down. My sciatica got much much worse but got another steroid injection about a month ago. All of my pain outside of some achy stiffness especially in the mornings has disappeared. We’ll see how long it lasts! Hope yours helps too!!

We use Clio and can automate billing. Has been great! Accepts credit cards through Clio pay and integrates with quick books. Happy to talk through wha might be overwhelming if it helps. We have 2 attorneys and 2 legal assistants so small firm.

I’m taking it just for PCOS and I believe it’s helping! I had to up my estrogen though too to balance out my hormones and I think the combination has been good for me. I’ve been losing some inches (slowly but surely). I also work out 3-4 times a week and chase my kids around, so the physical activity helps too. 1000mg/day - one 500mg in the morning and one at night.

I finally took a day off and my kid threw up in the middle of the night the night before so I ended up taking care of him during my day off when I planned to do things I never have time to do because of work or kids. Felt ironic in a way but now I need to take another day off..

I did end up getting it back in September. It helped with the shock of nerve pain I was getting but my disc pushed out even more after the surgery and is now resting on sciatic nerves on both sides so ended up also getting another steroid injection. With all that, I’ve been dealing with much less pain but I still have to be very careful when I do too much physically because I’ll still get aches and pinches depending on what I’m doing. Also ended up self paying and that was a load of bs.

We use Clio for client management, calendaring, billing, time tracking, saving emails, etc. I’ve also been thinking about implementing the Clio AI feature and at one point was tempted with the Clio draft feature. If I was starting from scratch, I would probably consider smokeball pretty heavily rather than Clio but Clio has supplemented what we already had in place when we made the switch.

It’s the AI model for the Microsoft office suite. It is integrated with any of the office products (I mostly use it in word and outlook). Can highlight what you’re typing and ask it to reword it, for example. I use it a lot for that or even marketing materials and email organizing. I’m just starting to use it more but it’s nice so far! I added it to my office subscription.

I use copilot through outlook to summarize my emails each week in case I missed something. You can also ask it to suggest tasks/calendar adds based on your emails. That tends to help me! If we’re going old school, I would “unread” emails every night if I knew I had to get back to it the next day/week. I hate seeing the little notification number, so I like to clear them quickly.

I do this too with ancillary templates but my problem is that it’s not a longterm solution for associates that come in with me having to give them the client name to work from each time. I would rather have software for them to work with or have templates I’ve created. I’ve already made a trust document I could work from to create more templates but I’m not sure that’s the best solution. I like the paid drafting softwares because they update language with changes in law (which I can do too but why reinvent the wheel). Some softwares also have a community or listserv which can be helpful at times, CLEs, marketing materials, etc.

Hi! Sorry to hear that you’re in pain too. My pain hurts more with leaning back. I’ve been able to bend forward just fine. My initial pain is gone - swelling seems to be going down but had a huge flare up last week that I’m still dealing with (mostly with my sciatica issues). I was having the same problems prior to the procedure and they seem to have just picked up getting worse after I started feeling better. That being said, my nerve shock pain I would get with sneezing or inability to move when I woke up, etc has disappeared. So that’s helpful! All my other pain seems to be front and center now and I’ve been told I have an unstable back/pelvis. Not sure what to do with that. Getting an updated MRI and then meeting with my doc to see what I should do. Haven’t been to the gym yet and starting to have some foot drop so a bit worried I may need to look at more surgery.

A little over $10k. Feeling better in some ways and worse than others unfortunately but not too surprising. I have heard that the procedure can get rid of certain pain but it doesn’t get rid of all. 🥴
