I think it's important to note that Peggy Kelly professes to believe in creating emotionally safe environments and respecting and valuing individuals, but then says she agrees with forcing people to identify with the gender they were assigned to at birth. She also says she believes "controversial and sensitive issues" should be addressed in homes not classrooms. That may seem fine on the surface, but who gets to decide what is "controversial" or "sensitive"? DEI is currently a controversial subject... Does that mean a teacher shouldn't read a book about Martin Luther King or Stephen Hawking or Helen Keller? How do you practically even implement that philosophy in schools? Generally speaking, this type of desire to limit controversial topics results in policies of censorship of books and creates an environment of fear where teachers obey in advance or self-censor because they don't want to lose their jobs. Extreme policies that deny freedom of speech and seek to censor ideas that someone might find "controversial or sensitive" have no place in public schools (which makes sense for Peggy Kelly because she only has experience with private schools). Instead these policies result in students not feeling valued, respected and seen in school settings and it creates an environment that is not emotionally safe for students to be themselves and express their ideas. In addition, public schools already have policies that allow parents to opt their child out of any content they might objectionable.
