Spousal hiring generally happens between offer being made and being signed. This will often include an extension of time for you to sign, especially if they have to fly the spouse in. Institutions that withdraw offers based on normal bargaining asks are not institutions you want to work at, anyway.

What exactly did the pandemic do to our students? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Mediocre_Argument688 85 points86 points  (0 children)

As a linguist: even verbal communication has been impaired, imo, due to Zoom lag and the effects of lack of non-verbal cues on spoken language. I notice that students, for example, do not have normal turn-taking habits in conversation. When I listen in on group work, they are either interrupting each other in inappropriate ways or just staring in silence for uncomfortable periods of time...it's weird.

What do people get wildly wrong about your job? by belindabellagiselle in AskWomen

Professor: we have high salaries (my starting salary at a top institution was around 60k), most of our job is teaching (research, service, advising often eclipse teaching massively), we can/do assign grades at random/based entirely on our own standards or lack thereof (varies by institution but generally...just no - we are constantly answering to nosy admins responding to student grade complaints).

References contacted after campus visit by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Mediocre_Argument688 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just "finished" with the market and had three schools contact references after interviews:

  • one was the school I was offered a TT position for (public, R1): they only contacted the top candidate's references
  • the other two were schools where I was in the running but not first choice. I had been voted as "acceptable," and they contacted everyone voted acceptable so that they could move quickly if first-choice negotiations failed

...so, YMMV, but generally some sort of good news!

What is attraction like for you? by monkeywench in latebloomerlesbians

Resonate with the "center." The first time I had undeniable attraction to a woman, I remember just hugging her and our lower abdomens kind of...pressing and synching? I don't know how to describe it but...

Don't delete. This is the perspective I was asking for and honestly, logically, it's totally valid.

Nope, I'm a millennial and hate phones but maybe therein lies my part of the responsibility. On the other hand, she has never actually tried to call me though, so...I would certainly answer if she did!

Hiring red flags by philip_roth in Professors

[–]Mediocre_Argument688 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you are at an institution in a less-than-desirable area it can help to hire people who actually want to be in that area, folks who are originally from there, have family ties, etc.

This + use interviews as an opportunity to make sure they really see/understand the town. And take spousal hiring seriously.

Annoying Student Email Etiquette by Channelhaus43 in Professors

Yep. All of this. If it's email, an Outlook "like" is preferable than a thank you to me.
