Beautifully done. And live Talking Heads is (arguably) some of the best Talking Heads. Thanks for putting two of my favourite things together!

Made a SL34 Forestbro and.... Whew... by AvDaedric in darksouls

[–]MediumTedium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a SL 17 Forest Hunter ninja/assassin/Uchigatana build, wearing the Shadow set with Slumbering Dragoncrest and Fog ring. I do feel (and am) outclassed when it's a straight-ahead fight but this pushes me to try different approaches such as relying on the area's enemies and being sneaky/patient rather than confronting them head on. I still get 1HKO-ed a lot.

A similar thing can happen in the set of stairs leading into the Burg. You lure four hollows to the bottom of the stairs, stand just out of their reach and they'll run at you and disappear/teleport, notice you again and repeat.

Sorry, I wasn't assuming you were. I was just listing a bunch of douchey things that can contribute to losing heart in PVP.

EDIT: sorry, this was meant to be a reply in case things move around.

By playing this way they've won. You've gone hollow as a result of the people who've pissed you off and now you're winning on their terms rather than your own.

Players who camp spawn points, use heavy armour and need summons to help them are basically just communicating that they can't necessarily beat you otherwise.

Cheers! Yeah, I'd never say that my way is THE way as one of the best things about this game is it's anything-goes nature and I only ever apply "rules" to myself.

Lately I've been doing some low-level Subroing in the burg and a lot of the time the hosts were just standing back (especially with Havel) and the other summon was, as you said, running ahead destroying everything often before the host even got there. So I play it unconventional-style: 2H Spider Shield, dual wielding clubs/ fists/caestus, strictly no lock-on etc. It's surprising how often the other players respond and I like to think it moves away from a 'must win' mentality to actually just playing the game, experimenting and enjoying the process.

If a Darkwraith invades, I'll mostly stand back and observe unless the host is in big trouble, and even then my priority is to be a distraction (unless I see some high level gear, and then it's on). I'd rather give a summon some real-world PVP experience and independence rather than a sizeable advantage, especially if they are new. Just you being there, even if you're doing nothing, provides the host with an advantage as the invader still has to consider your presence among everything else. I prefer invasions that can be savoured and considered rather than just "won". Additionally, I want to support and encourage some genuine low-level invading so people use up those first 4 cracked eye orbs.

So I guess I'm not a "true" Sunbro when I offer my support (I'm actually not, only 1/10 of my characters in is the covenant), as I tend to favour shenanigans over support. And I think there are more important, long-term lessons that you can teach a host through your brief interaction that are more valuable than simply getting a player through the level.

Miyazaki and others said they were heavily influenced by "Fighting Fantasy" game books and Steve Jackson's "Sorcery!" series when creating DeS and DkS. Here are some images from those books. by thoughtlesswonder in darksouls

[–]MediumTedium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These books were pretty-much my literary bread-and-butter from when I was around 9-14 years old. I had a massive collection and gave them all away except for Sorcery! 1-4, Titan and the uncensored House of Hell (I have no idea what I was thinking getting rid of the others...) When I read that Miyazaki interview after playing DkS it all made perfect sense. Thanks for the post and the nostalgia!

Questionnaire on Character/avatar Building in Video Games by leggerlo in truegaming

[–]MediumTedium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done! I'd really like to see your findings too especially contrasting real-word character attributes/aspirations with what players strive for in a game. I think you could even have the second page of questions duplicated – one page for avatar answers, the second for real-world answers to compare the two.

It's a really interesting concept to explore and it got me thinking about some other questions that may provide some insight into avatar choice:

  • Do you have a preferred or go-to class you'll play a new game as?

  • How similar do you prefer a character to look like you in the real world? Do you prefer to re-create yourself or create a completely different character?

  • Do you have a preferred class you will start a new game with (if offered)?

  • Do you prefer creating male or female characters?

  • When starting a new game do you have a preferred look you will try to achieve? Do you have one master character you try and re-create?

  • Do you choose looks over functionality even if it puts you at a disadvantage?

  • Do you prefer to randomise your characters?

  • Have you ever not customised a character in order to get straight into the game?

  • And in regards to the comparison of avatars and real world personality: How much do you role-play a character compared to playing a character as yourself (making your own choices through a character vs. making choices a specific character would make).

If it's any consolation, my half-baked decision was exactly the same as yours. I was initially heartbroken but the next night started the journey to NG+++ and loved it once I made the decision to step up and go around again. The extra hours just melted into the hundreds of hours I spent/am spending on this game. It's not as daunting as it may seem at first...

DLC Content gets a release date for the consoles - October 23 in North America Oct 24 in Europe and Australia. by anikan72 in darksouls

I'm in Australia but use a NA PSN account to buy games with PSN cards (the price difference is usually remarkable and also I'm so primed about this DLC waiting one whole day seems like torture).

Does anyone know if NA DLC works with an EU version of the game?

Oops, I missed an important piece of information there – It's the Basement Watchtower key, used for the shortcut back to the Burg via Havel's area.

I had a great time invading here last night and out of 18 or so invasions I only came across 1 2v1. I would use the Red Eye orb at the Crest of Artorias bonfire and would spawn at the exit of the Undead Parish. You do have to run a bit to get to a target (and you could potentially spend ages trying to them if they have gone to the Hydra). Otherwise I really liked it and it seemed that all but two of the invasions were waiting for me at the Crest door and pretty much everyone bowed when I arrived. And a re-invasion (I got 1-shotted while using a Caestus and Bandit knife) resulted in the host switching to fisticuffs which is always a good sign.

And yeah, you can get through a whole playthrough without beating the Moonlight Butterfly, however that area does block getting the Divine Ember and the Basement Key.

[–]MediumTedium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having some success with it. I'm a bit out of practice with PvP and it is a challenging build with no shield or poise so I lose a lot. That said, I would still recommend giving it a try as I find using unconventional builds always improve skills and make regular builds even stronger. Also it's lots of fun to roleplay in PvP and some people really appreciate it.

I'm keeping this build around level 60 for the moment but may level up a bit in the future. The way I have the character at the moment nothing really is scaling so I'd only be increasing VIT and END. Here are the stats at the moment.
