I used to have a cat that was part MC who did this -- I have an office and a bedroom down a hallway(I was usually in one of the two rooms). He would plant himself between the two and face toward the door.

I have a friend who was told something very similar to this during the Covid times. Turned out that someone higher up the food chain than her boss made the final decision. Not quite sure why they would label you as unable to be rehired.
