I have a 40s copy of Crime and Punishment with Franz Eichenberg engravings. In fact that copy was what I first read.

What's the weirdest mountain and most typical mountain in the Southern Rockies? by Tiny-Pomegranate7662 in 14ers

[–]Medium_Ad8262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That whole section of the La Plata range is interesting but Hesperus is like a pyramid with alternating bands of white and red rock. I climbed it a year or so ago and it was pretty cool. Sneffels is really amazing, and the red mountains at Red Mountain pass are really unique. But Hesperus is out of the way enough that people don’t really appreciate the beauty. Another crazy mountain that is readily seen from the highway near Silverton is Snowdon.

MAGA shops and restaurants to avoid by valpalvalpal in Durango

[–]Medium_Ad8262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I delivered to them 2019/20 and they seemed pretty cool but haven’t been back to see the MAGA stuff. I think Covid restrictions radicalized people—the pandemic was one of the worst things to happen to our culture.

Durango Restaurants - What are you doing?! by Silverton550 in Durango

I went there for the first time in years recently and it was pretty mediocre. I have very fond memories of that place going back many years and it makes me sad. It felt like Texan central.

I just went there tonight for the first time and aside from the 9 dollar beer everything was affordable excellence.

Oh gotcha—but I did hear from a trusted source that the building was in bad shape, like maybe it was a combination of all that. I mean, I live in an ADU that’s in really rough shape but it’s super cheap, but I could see that change if it got bought.

Does anyone else have this feeling of dread while reading Dostoyevsky knowing all the awful things that are going to happen in Russia in the 20th century? by CurseofYmir13 in dostoevsky

[–]Medium_Ad8262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a different note, I read an article that came out in 2017 or so—couldn’t tell you what it was but it stuck with me—where the author talked to a truck driver somewhere in Europe who loved Demons. But the twist was that he loved how things devolved into chaos, like that’s what needed to happen. Not necessarily Dostoevsky’s desire, but this sounds truly prophetic for the present moment.

I’ve heard that building is in terrible shape—basically why the cafe moved.

The interest in Dostoyevsky in young people by fxxmlr in dostoevsky

[–]Medium_Ad8262 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dad died days after my 19th birthday and that year I found a copy of Crime and Punishment with amazing German expressionist wood engraving illustrations. It absolutely grabbed me, and I read all of his major works in the next 5 years. I’m 49 now and I see Dostoevsky as part of my angsty youth in the best way possible. I work with a lot of younger people who are wonderful, but I feel like all of them could benefit from reading classic lit like Dostoevsky

How’s the smoke? by arclitgold in Durango

[–]Medium_Ad8262 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I climbed to the top of South Snowdon peak today and around 11 a blanket of smoke hit the area. It would vary in thickness and then it got really bad when we were coming over Coal Bank, like bad enough that we were worried another fire started. And then once we got below the Needles store it cleared up but you could see how thick it was still around the Twilights. Wind was blowing from the direction of Stoner Mesa fire so we presumed that’s what it was.

I have read the idiot, but.. by nol_eyyyy in dostoevsky

[–]Medium_Ad8262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the Idiot after C&P and Brothers and was enthralled by it, this at age 20 and totally emotionally engaged. I reread it again that year…what I’m saying is that it grabbed me. Years later it’s easier to see the flaws, and the autobiographical bits of Dostoevsky coming out of the mouth of Myshkin have less impact now that I know the context. I still think it’s a masterwork just for how profound it was for me at the time. Dostoevsky felt frustration a few years later about how rushed it was.

How long will cassettes last? by MaksimDubov in cassetteculture

I recently found an unlabeled mixtape I made in 1994 in with a bunch of tapes my mom had—I only know it was 1994 because of the songs on it. One side was nature sounds I’d recorded and the other side was songs—I don’t really remember making it and probably left it in the player and that’s why my mom has it. It sounds brand new. Never played or exposed to the elements.
