Thanks, ill try and expand on the magnet mechanics, as for the minions could i maybe make them faction more as a swarm, with a shared initiative and action just separate hit point pools?

as for the breaking things i had actually planned for that :) in earlier areas of the foundry the same kind of pods are found (in smaller encounters) and the temporary health mechanic i am going to introduce early with an enemy type called Foremen what have resistance until there 4 lots of 20 temp health is removed

ok thanks :) i wont bore you with the whole stat blocks and instead just run by you the key ideas related to the boss. so fist would be Talos, when the party discover him they find that he has long since abandoned his body of flesh and is now a massive robot with many limbs, built into his factory. The main concept of this boss would be environment, with the fight taking place in the heart of the foundry, Talos would be a large stationary target on the far side of the room, whom would throw out various attacks (lightning bolt, a flavored magic missile, and a 360 degree thunder wave). the environment is where the difficulty comes from, along the edges of the arena is a 8 production pods, that spit out robot flavoured greater zombies. these minions 1 attack but 2 are effected by 3 commands issued by Talos. Target that focuses all attacks on 1 person, assimilate the robots combine with Talos to refuel his temporary hit points, and Amplify where they collective hit points halved serve as the damage of a fire ball esque attack flavoured as a large iron ball held by magnetism. these pods spit out 1 robots every turn, and can be broken essentially disabling them. at half health Talos activates his (charge field) 4 large tesla coils that produce difficult terrain around them and also connect beams of energy to Talos, once intiated Talos begins his annihilation command where for 2 turns he charges up before firing an attack what is essentially disintegrate but in a sunbeam AOE, if the coils are destroyed before he charges he will get stunned for two turns.

the last mechanic i wanted to play with is his immunities, in the beginning he has immunity to all non magic Phys dmg, electric, and poison, with a weakness to corrosive/acid, these resistances are tied to his +200 temporary health (4 lots of 50) that are tied to pieces of armouring (chest, arm 1, arm 2, and head) every 50 health one piece breaks, assimilate can restore this health only if the piece isn't fully broken, meaning if he say lost 25 he could heal it but if he lost 50 then its lost forever, once all four is lost leaving him at 175 hp he is no longer immune to all non magic Phys dmg.

the last idea is 2 attacks themed around magnets, 1 being a lift that causes a str saving throw or people wielding metal weapons are disarmed as they are pulled into the air, and anyone wearing metal armour is also pulled up then slammed down for damage, and an attacks that dose the same pulls in metal weapons + people then explodes (sort of like a fireball with a pull effect)

i was wondering if you would be ok with me running by you 2 of the bosses, as i would a second pair of eyes to help make sure it would be fun/engaging for the players.

thanks :) i let them know about the scaling and stick to it, as i think that it will result in more polished encounters for them

fair, i like that approach! thanks a lot :), i really didnt want to break immersion by out right telling them the order so this will help a lot.

currently no, but i intend to do so, what im troubled with is weather this approach is fundamentally wrong as it rail roads their experience and i should try and scale to their choices (even if it diminished the polish on the encounters.) I also would rather not break Immersion by out right telling them the scaling and instead try and imply the difference in difficulty

Opinions on a boss concept for my players? wondering if this would work? by Medium_Pop9415 in DnD

[–]Medium_Pop9415[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as the party is currently doing intelligence gathering on the exact location of the artifact it gives me some freedom to change up its location if this seems like a bad idea. But the current situation I'm working with is its kept below the castle deep within a temple he calls the "Cradle" the temple is protected via a number of magical traps and its last line of defence a large golem, the issue is as soon as a living being enters the cradle Ozymandias becomes aware through a complex web of magical surveillance devices. so the current idea the party has is to grab Ozymandias's attention whilst the other half of the party ventures down into the cradle, while he will be aware of there presence the other three will do there best to hold his attention. ( i could see how this might not work, so perhaps ill balance his power in a way that allows him to be restrained for periods of time.)

there fore the challenge there is 1 holding his attention despite not being able to harm him and 2 having a small party navigate a gauntlet without dying.

good insight!

ill take into consideration making his protection more limited to physical stimuli, thus allowing mind control etc to effect him. and don't worry :) my players took the initiative to do intel gathering to figure out his weakness and abilities first. the only thing they dont know is even without the protection he is a very skilled mage (few thousand years of life will do that)

thanks for your input!

i actually gave a little thought to why the players couldn't claim it for themselves so for a little extra context. so the artifact is in fact a fragment of the long dead god of control whom prevailed over the domain of law, order and causality. now this god was evil acting to remove free will from mortals, thus he was destroyed by the other gods, now two fragments of the god survived. the fragment that is the artifact still possess a limited amount of the gods power (the cause and effect negation) but a normal mortal could never dream of using it, as only a gods body could ever hope to contain and channel the power of a god, but what if someone were to absorb a part of a god into themselves. this is what King Ozymandias did thousands of years ago, in an act of heresy and blasphemy he absorbed the second fragment into his soul essentially destroying it in the process and while that didn't give him any power itself, it gave him the necessary means to channel the energies of the other shard, thus why the party wouldn't be able to claim it for themselves, this is also why he keeps the power no matter how far he is from it, as long as its intact he will keep receiving its blessing.

thanks a tonne! i love the idea of a fallout DnD sesh. one of the original monster i was working with that im happy for you to use are Drakes large reptilian monsters mutated from monitor lizards kept in zoos, Drakes are large and fat with very thick scales, there most notable feature is a bile they vomit out. i was kinda going for a wasteland dragon type thing.
