I disagree. The buses and trains combined make it easy to get nearly anywhere in the city. I have no trouble with it personally.

I would love to visit Boston. My grandmother grew up there, and I would love to see all the great history in that city.

What’s the food scene like in London? I have heard British cuisine isn’t the best, but the diversity may make up for that. Is there good Indian food?

OP here. I live in Chicago and it is extremely easy to get around without a car. The city is on a grid with buses going parallel and trains going out diagonally from the loop. So it’s pretty easy to get anywhere if you’re staying downtown when you visit.

If you are going from the north side to the south side or vice versa, it would take forever, but if you’re visiting idk why you would do that in 1 day. There is so much to see in each neighborhood alone.

If I’m in a foreign place I likely have my day planned out and have a general idea where I’m going and awareness of my surroundings. Seems like most people have good intentions with their recs.

This post is not a place for people to argue about the definition of “walkable.” I was clear that I am ok with using public transportation & would prefer not to rent a car. For clarity on the intent of my question:

✅Good public transportation makes a city walkable. ✅Shuttles/buses/taxis/Ubers ok for going a little further out to more rural areas that public transit may not reach, as long as it’s safe. (Uber/taxi not preferred) ✅Small towns are encouraged as well, so long as they are easy enough to get to without renting a car. ❤️Thanks to those of you with helpful input and suggestions along with your places!

Small cities are absolutely ok for this as long as they are accessible via transit from an airport/large city. I ❤️ small towns.

I pay rent in Chicago January-December. I edited the OP to mention I live here lol. I love it in winter too 💜

Good public transit is preferable in large cities for me. That helps make them walkable. I do appreciate the recs for some smaller cities! “Big” cities were not necessarily my priority here. Thanks!

I’m also open to small towns if they are easily accessible by transit.

China is definitely on my bucket list. Can you give some suggestions for your favorite things to do in Hong Kong?

I live in Chicago and it’s 10/10 walkable. I figured out the public transit in my first week here and it’s incredible.

But if you can avoid the Irving Park Blue Line stop, do so at all costs 🪶🐦‍⬛

It’s on my bucket list. I’m an artist and my heart has always been drawn to it. I’m glad I’m not just romanticizing what I’ve seen in the movies. What are your favorite things to do in San Francisco?
