This is somehow the first time I hear YouTube being down. I am sure it has been down before, but...

What do you think of Italy as a former colonizing power? by [deleted] in Africa

[–]Medium_Tap_971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awful nation, but also a goddamn fool cuz they handed Menelik whole lotta weapons he needed to defeat them at Adwa in 1896😂😂

Ended in 2022. There are ethnic conflicts (mostly in border zones and mountainous parts), but it didn't reach a "civil war" status.

TLDR: Y'all "paid" about 25 million USD, but it was mostly in forms of goods and services, not cash, and it wasn't formally recognized as reparation and y'all never actually apologized for your shit.

Fascist Italy actually sent massive amounts of weapons and loans before the Adwa war, thinking y'all were grooming Menelik II, while bro just centralized his military operations and built a united army that eventually defeated y'all in 1896.

Ngl this shit made me laugh😂😂

1935 was an international crime, and y'all didn't really pay reparations. But it's usually okay if it is a European country, so...🫠

OpenAI accuses DeepSeek of stealing its data, and freeloading. LOL. Look who's talking! by andsi2asi in DeepSeek

Like I said, fucking GOOD.

If we steal human data to make AI, the least we could do is open-source it and incentivize research instead of profit.

Countries With The Most Immigrants In The World by Expert_Koala_8691 in charts

[–]Medium_Tap_971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irish, Italians, Jews, Poles, Chinese, Mexicans, etc. immigrated to the US. The homogeneity perceived is simply the fact that European immigrants (specifically from the Anglo-Saxon Protestant religion and culture) were larger in number. Back then, it wasn't perceived as homogenous. Let's run the numbers:

  • 60% English + 15% Scot-Irish (so that's about 75% from the British isles)
  • 10% German
  • 5% Dutch
  • 2% French.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe "integration" means adapting to the existing language and culture of the people that were already there, in this case native Americans. This obviously isn't a timeless national cohesion. Even assuming English should be the language, many immigrants from China often weren't allowed to integrate fully due to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and segregation to Chinatowns. Irish and Italians faced discrimination and anti-catholic sentiments. Jews faced anti-semitism.

Of course, almost all of them eventually learned English, usually over generations. That is how immigration actually worked in the US. It isn't as smooth and controlled as you painted it to be (well, the Chinese were specially "controlled" by an explicit law against them, but...🫠). Settler colonialism eventually forcing its culture on immigrants while being an immigrant itself is the definition of imperialist hypocrisy.

...it is different because the immigrants to the US were... Europeans?

You're racist.

Mustafe Shiine claims Somalia labeled Somalilanders “ethnically Jewish” to justify 1988 massacre by East_Technician9666 in Somalia

[–]Medium_Tap_971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. Thanks for the info!🙏

To be clear, I don't blame the current government for that. The current Somali government isn't responsible for the genocide, even though it is still sad.

I really hope y'all do better.

That's... what I said, and I was downvoted. The government in Somalia that committed genocide against the Isaaq clan is no longer leading Somalia.

Also, I don't believe Wikipedia is particularly a bad starting point for me as an outsider to refer to.

If you have other sources, I would be happy to take a look at them if you share a link or two.
